I remember one of my earliest Linux experiences involved trying to get a gateway PC with one of those weird generic 3Cxxx based integrated NICs working with Debian (my first distro).
I posted newbieshly to a Debian NG and amidst the flames and RTFM's, Donald Becker actually took the time to provide me with the solution.
This experience encouraged me to continue learning Linux networking, and the rest is (obscure) history....:-)
I am glad that in their fight against the Evil Government Censorship Conspiracy, the commie dorks have guaranteed that children's access to internet snuff porn shall remain unhindered!
But I imagine the reason the ads get absorbed (whether or not you've seen them before) is that they are designed to tunnel directly into your hippocampus (sp?) which doesn't have any sense of time, just an eternal, reptilian NOW.
Which is also, incidentally why the lizrd brain is prone to violent outbursts. Sexy outbursts too!
It's heartening to see that Creative has taken some steps to remedy their past sins; the Soundblaster series has always been just shy of being worthy of serious attention from those who need their PCs to do more than play games.
The Audigy, while still not the Holy Grail (affordable, production-quality soundcard), is head and shoulders above previous offerings.
Speaking from personal experience, every project I have been involved with for my employer over the past year has been either partially or (in most cases) completely built on Open Source applications.
And the inperative to go OSS has come, surprisingly, not from us admins and developers, but from tech-savvy Management types, who understand the value of OSS and can read the coding on the wall:-)
Given the profliferation of exploits related to race conditions, predictible file creation, etc, we should henceforth re-tool our code to only make use of stateless protocols! ;-)
Manufacturer of the hammer cannot dictate what kind of nails customer must use.
I agree -- but he *can* design the hammer to be incompatible with any but his own nails, and then punish any modification of the hammer to work with non-approved nails.....at least, if my understanding of this crazy thing is correct...
Is there any kind of EULA to which a user must agree before using the printer? Something such as "By using this printer I agree to only use Lexmark toner etc etc..."? That's the only way Lexmark's attitude would make sense. I think unless you prohibit certain potentially anti-DMCA activities at the outset, it's pretty cheesy to go after people later....
I've tried just about all of them except for Slackware, and am wondering if it offers a significantly different experience than, say, Debian
or Gentoo - from an administrative as well as end-user perspective. Thanks!

Which means that as a New Jersey resident, my postal code would be:

Kazaa's move is essentially an implementation of what BitTorrent's creator alluded to in the recent /. story --
getting past the "subversiveness" of file sharing and making it work for everyone, including the creators of the shared content.
Veddy interesting......
Hey, c'mon! at least it gives them something to read while they are going to the bathroom!
The more junk mail we get, the better -- we can line all the cages and not feel guilty about wasting paper!
And why do we have Tivo in the store?
Animal Planet, baby!!! :-)
Turbo CD Ripper / Grip
Photoshop / GIMP
Internet Explorer / Mozilla
Easy CD Creator / Eroaster
Windows Media Player / XMMS
Etc Etc........
If you can honestly say that Windows apps are no less intuitively named than their Open Source clones,
you are obviously blinded by zealotry.
Sad.....
The displays in Minority Report were all projector-based. I think.
Also, people will probably be shooting them out of the sky in order to steal the contents. Much easier than jacking a FedEx truck for example.
Oh, and nitpicking aside, this is way cool!

Do you place any credibilty in the tendency for certain analysts to derive things like a "mindshare index" from arguably disparate sources?

For too long, legislation and regulaton have lagged behind the technological paradigm. This is a step in the right direction.
