  1. What's the big deal? on Earthstation 5 Claimed to be Malware · · Score: 2, Funny

  2. Benefits of Slackware? on Slackware 9.1 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting
Before I go and grab the ISO, Can somebody give me a general idea of what sets Slackware apart from other distros?

I've tried just about all of them except for Slackware, and am wondering if it offers a significantly different experience than, say, Debian

or Gentoo - from an administrative as well as end-user perspective. Thanks!

  3. Becker rules on Imagine a Beowulf Cluster of Penguin Computers · · Score: 5, Interesting
I remember one of my earliest Linux experiences involved trying to get a gateway PC with one of those weird generic 3Cxxx based integrated NICs working with Debian (my first distro).

I posted newbieshly to a Debian NG and amidst the flames and RTFM's, Donald Becker actually took the time to provide me with the solution.

This experience encouraged me to continue learning Linux networking, and the rest is (obscure) history.... :-)

  5. This is just the beginning... on Kazaa/Altnet To Pay Users For Trading Content · · Score: 4, Interesting
After a long season of P2P software developers co-opting corporate resources, it looks like the technology is coming full circle.

Kazaa's move is essentially an implementation of what BitTorrent's creator alluded to in the recent /. story --

getting past the "subversiveness" of file sharing and making it work for everyone, including the creators of the shared content.

    Veddy interesting......

I work in a pet store and we are always in need of paper to line the Chinchilla corrals etc.

The more junk mail we get, the better -- we can line all the cages and not feel guilty about wasting paper!

First off, this is probably going to have to be regulated very heavily -- imagine the havok this could wreak if used for illegal commerce.

Oh, and nitpicking aside, this is way cool!

But I imagine the reason the ads get absorbed (whether or not you've seen them before) is that they are designed to tunnel directly into your hippocampus (sp?) which doesn't have any sense of time, just an eternal, reptilian NOW.

  13. Progress on Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Reviewed · · Score: 1
    It's heartening to see that Creative has taken some steps to remedy their past sins;
the Soundblaster series has always been just shy of being worthy of serious attention
from those who need their PCs to do more than play games.

The Audigy, while still not the Holy Grail (affordable, production-quality soundcard),
is head and shoulders above previous offerings.
