  1. The issue is not using water for a factory, it's diverting the water outside of the Lake Michigan watershed. The solution, to me at least, is easy; put the factory closer to the lake, so water stays within the lake's watershed.

The bigger issue is the money being wasted and philosophy of wrecking the planet; If you want to take advantage of Great Lakes water, come to the Great Lakes; don't divert it elsewhere. We can look at dry lakebeds in Russia and other places where massive diversions basically make the land uninhabitable. There's plenty of empty factory space in Milwaukee and along the shore that could be used by FoxConn.

  8. Obligatory Bono / U2 reference on Irish Government May Close Apple's Biggest Tax Loophole · · Score: 1

Since this is a story regarding Ireland, there is a legal obligation that Bono and/or U2 have to be mentioned at least once, especially since they used to be business partners. Remember the U2 special edition iPod? U2, reared in Ireland, have (has?) been roundly criticized by the Irish press/public for moving a lot of their business holdings out of Ireland (I believe to the Netherlands) to reduce their tax burden. They are made out in the press to be ungrateful tax dodgers/cheats. They are, it seems, working the loopholes like everyone else that can hire top-notch corporate tax accountants. Ireland has its financial troubles like a lot of countries, but a lot of the "Celtic Tiger" growth during the pre-2008 bust as due to these special tax laws. What goes around, comes around.

  17. Yes, I've fixed on the Lake Express - It's Crap on Wikipedia Wars -- Lake Express Ferry · · Score: 1

I work in a shipyard in Sturgeon Bay, (Bay Shipbuilding) and we've had the Lake Express here in our yard for service. I can personally attest that it has, indeed, had more than its fair share of mechanical difficulties. It's actually a large catamaran-style boat, so it will hydroplane (sort-of) on the top of the water. That makes it a more "bouncier" ride than the Badger, which sits lower in the water. This hydroplaning is also what allows it to make the trip across the lake faster than the Badger. As far as the Badger is concerned, I know a guy who used to work in the engine room. It's a coal-fired boat, folks. Coal. Not diesel, steam, or anything that's been invented in the last 50 years. If the owners of the Badger plead ignorance of Wiki, I am 99 percent inclined to believe they are stating the truth. However, perhaps an overzelous employee took it upon himself to help out his bosses. Even if the trip is shorter across in the Lake Express, From Interstate 43, which runs north-south along Lake Michigan, it's about 10 minutes from the exit ramp to the ferry dock in Manitowoc. In Milwaukeee, 10 minutes may get you over the interstate overpass and pointed toward the lake. Seriously, I don't think there's much overlap between the two services, and I can't believe one is poaching customers from the other.

  19. Answer from a welder - steel melts at approx. 2500 on How Hot Would a Light Saber Really Be? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I work in a shipyard as a welder. I can tell you that steel "melts" at approx. 2500 F. However, other metals such as aluminum and copper are welded at much higher temperatures, Of course, something like ceramic is much more "unmeltable" than metal, and we wouldn't want to think that you could fend off a lightsaber attack with a ceramic coffee cup. It's not just a matter of heat. Of course, lightsabering could be said to be more closely related to plasma cutting than welding. In simplest terms, plasma cutting is a process that uses a high velocity jet of ionized gas that is delivered from a constricting orifice. The high velocity ionized gas, that is, the plasma, conducts electricity from the torch of the plasma cutter to the work piece. The plasma heats the workpiece, melting the material. The high velocity stream of ionized gas mechanically blows the molten metal away, severing the material. Then again, welding and plasma cutting only works with conductive materials, like metal. You can't plasma-cut an arm off. The another issue is that both welding and plasma cutting require your material to be grounded, plasma cutting requires a source of compressed air, and an incredible source of electricity/ amps in a power source the same size, or smaller, than several of our "D" sized batteries. We do know, however, from watching "Empire" that they have portable welders, which they use (uselessly) to defend Hoth.
