    Meanwhile, cache sizes are up, instruction pipes are up, hyperthreading has been here a while, multi-core chips are coming down the pike... we're still getting speed gains, just not in raw clocks.

    And "just" not in the same magnitudes (over time) as we saw from those previous clock speed gains. Which is the point of the article. Doubling cache or going multi-core has much smaller returns than doubling the clock speed for most apps.

    I hate to say it, but what do you think you need 10GHz for anyway? Unless you've got a REALLY fat pipe, there's a limit on how much pr0n you can process ;^)

    The same thing you needed 1 GHz for when 300 MHz was state-of-the-art. And don't ever ask that again or you'll have to turn in your geek card.

    Anyway you spin it, the game industry is huge and growing fast.

    Yeah, like a tumor.

    The number of really good productions, whether movies or games or whatever, stays pretty constant. It's the refuse pile you have to sift through to find the good ones that's getting larger.

    If we don't keep the ranks of young hackers swelling, we can expect Microsoft to take over. Without a constant stream of competitive free GPL's software and other viruses, their ascendency is just a matter of time. Give the the gift of resistance!

    Add the fact that they aren't trying to rip you off by requiring you to re-purchase everything you already own (they're actually doing the opposite) and it seems like they might be trying to please their customers!

    Not really. They're ripping you off twice. The DVD layer will not have the quality that we have now with dual-layer DVDs and the HD layer will not have the quality that a double layer HD-DVD would have.

    Call the glass half-full if you want. I'd rather see full HD-DVD (if not Blu-ray) than this twice-incompetant red-headed illegitimate stepchild.

    One thing to keep in mind though, all of this is still scheduled for late 2005, and prices for HD or Blu-ray players are going to be close to $1000. Most of us aren't going to be buying right away. We have plenty of time to see how this shakes out.

    The first step is obviously to get of this planet, but this only gives human kind a few extra thousand years. We must as soon as possible spread out beyond this galaxy to ensure the survival of humans and perhaps life in general. We must leave. Now. Immediately.

    There really is no point to all that worry and scurrying about the universe. You can run but you can't hide. In the long run entropy always wins. Heat death of the universe, game over. Or the big crunch. Also game over. There is no future for life the universe and everything. The best you can hope for is not to get a facehugger gaining carnal knowledge of your esophagus before you go.

    The 6600 cards are pretty reasonably priced, so picking up two of them and getting 180% performance of a single 6600GT AGP is pretty attractive

    But picking up 2 6600's is going to cost the same as or more than a 6800GT. And the single 6800GT is faster than the SLI 6600's. IMO, the SLI feature only really appeals if you've got $800 to drop on video cards. If you've got $400, a single card is still more powerful.

    Actually many states do require the Electors to cast their votes for the winner of that state's popular vote.

    In any case, Electors are generally die-hard party members. The few (18 IIRC) "faithless" electors over the years have not been attempting to reverse the election, but rather trying to grab attention to some hot-button issue of their own.

    FYI: even today, you can't send more than a 486 in orbit, mostly because of feature sizes. The smaller the feature size, the easier for cosmic radiation to screw things up.

    This article from 2000 is about Pentium 166 laptops on the Shuttle. So, no, they are not stuck with 486's because of cosmic radiation.

    Sorry. 1 in 5 is not a monopoly at all. A major player, obviously, but not a monopoly. Walmart has been doing this type of price squeezing on suppliers for years. It's how they got where they are. If the major labels didn't see this coming, they're pretty foolish.

    Yes, actually it is.

    Let's say your average 'gamer' system uses 500W of power, including monitor.

    At 10c per KWh, that is going to be 5c/hour, or $37/month.

    500 W of power is grossly overestimating even a top end gaming system with a big CRT. Real world numbers are closer to 1/3 to 1/2 that even when playing games. If you can manage to play games 24/7 on a 50" big screen TV, well then, more power to you.

    If you are sending something so critical then you shouldn't be using email. FedEx with signature required delivery and certified/return-receipt USPS mail exist for a reason.

    Return-receipt on email also exists for similar reasons. Not many people use it though.
