With that tubing she periodically gave the survivors salt water enemas. The lower intestine, designed to extract water from the human waste stream, was adequate to extract moisture while being impermeable to the salt in the salt water. Bingo! Or, as they say here, profit! (Next time I go out on the ocean my kit will contain an enema syringe)
