Truth. Fact is, humans need to be proficient at a lot of things in order to live properly. A few autist people is great, because they have a hyper-focus that is useful in certain situations, but even they require others in order to function on a day-to-day basis. It is extremely inefficient and very evolutionarily undesirable. Autists are unable to handle situations outside of their specialization. That's unsustainable for a large number of people. What value is gained for reading a book, watching a movie, listening to music or mounting a pretty painting on the wall? It's all entertainment. If he enjoyed doing it, that's all the gain *he* needs. Entertainment is an end unto itself. Fun and beauty ARE utility.

i'd rather do the other things i listed above than play WoW, but in the end, it's all fun and games.

When you do those others, you are culturing yourself and learning about the world and other people. All of those things (I would argue that this is a lot less true of movies than the others, though all the film majors out there would disagree) are highly educational and help you better yourself as a person. This is not true of video games, ESPECIALLY MMO time sinks. Saying playing WoW is comparable to reading is sad and says a lot about our society.

The rest of those would be difficult, but France would surrender once you landed troops in the country and Italy would switch sides once a month. I suppose for that matter, Russia would just throw infantry at our tanks and Spain would be neutral anyways, so we'd only have difficulty with China, Germany, and the UK.

I agree that there are a lot of good games that don't have the one main character. FFVI is a great example. It's my favorite video game ever.

Having a strong main character makes it easier to write an engaging story. Writing a story with diverse characters that still pulls the player in is difficult, because you have to give them a clearer reason to identify with all of the characters. It's doable, but is more difficult. My guess is that they were having trouble making the story work without Vaan and Penelo, so they wrote them in. That adding two more caracters for battles was just an added bonus.

  20. Re:You know, you're right. on Final Fantasy XII Review · · Score: 2, Insightful

People like to have a "main character" in movies, books, and games. It helps them to identify with the situation much better. Most of the strongest games (from a storytelling perspective) are ones with a strong lead character. Vaan is a good one because, as ou say, they represent the normal person. Most people would have trouble identifying with a Sky Pirate or Princess, but identifying with a 17 year old orphan is easy. This is why most fantasy books start off with the main character being a commoner who, unknown to him has magical powers/is prophesized/etc. It starts you somewhere you're familiar (bein a normal person) and greadually works you into being someone special. It makes you feel as if it could really happen to you.
