Bah, you probably want to use IPCop instead. The Smoothwall community has a history of being, ummm..., moody and really pissed a lot of people off. IPCop was forked off of Smoothwall several years ago to make a more friendly product, and I have to say I like it much better.
On Topic: I haven't used the VPN functionality yet, but with my new cable modem I plan on connecting to a couple of sites I support (all with IPCop).
Hmm. I still think a forward sweeping beam would be more efficient - remember, you want to catch what isn't caught on the first sweep and vaporize it again before it has time to fall (maybe it's a particularly tough little bugger to vaporize and takes some hits to reduce it ash).
This only works if the mower is moving forward. There are several places on my lawn that I move back and forth over (under the swing set, near the fence, etc). Although I agree with you that a sweeping beam would be better than a static one.
Several such sweeping beams might even work better. I'd have to think about the geometry a bit. One wants to cover everything within the mower plenum from as many angles as possible, yet not have overlap. Argh:)
Again, I think a rotating beam would do this quite efficiently. Also, I was thinking of making a square deck so that you could get into those tight spots (corners) that you need a weed eater for today. Just another advantage.:)
Ok, I know I'm not the only one who has thought of this, but why not build a lawn mower out of this laser? It would be silent, energy efficient, compact, lightweight, non-polluting, and cheap to build and maintain. Just mount a spinning mirror to the bottom of a regular power mower and shine the laser down on it. You could even diffuse the beam so that it becomes "non-lethal" after 1 meter or so. It wouldn't even have to have an grass discharge outlet (clippings (c|w)ould burn up completely?) that usually let's all kinds of objects fly out at you.
This would be a much safer lawn mower than the one you have in your garage right now. Think about it; how many times have you run across rovers dog bone remains and had them shoot out at high speed? What about accidentally sticking your foot/hand in the path of the blade? At least with the laser it will make a clean cut.:)
Hell, I'd pay $1000 for a power mower with those qualities! I recently paid $300 for a crappy mower and good ones are going for $500. Then there's the upkeep (spark plugs, oil changes, fuel consumption, etc.) that rack up at least $100/year. In 5 year's time, this mower would pay for itself.
Well, this certainly sounds like a candidate for a possible future Darwin award winner. Let's just hope they don't take the whole planet out with them.:)
Wow!! A couple of days ago I was doing some Googling for cable modem help (new subscriber and it's not working yet:( ). Anyway, I typed ca into the www.hooznet.com/suggest site and it popped up my exact search phrase!
cable modem problem "return path" pending
This is too creepy...
Then again, maybe it was just looking in my browser cache or something. Can someone out there try it and let me know what you get?
My mother's Yahoo! password no longer works and she has no access to her Yahoo! mail at all. For some reason her password that she has had for years simply fails and we can't reset it because the reset information fails as well. I contacted support and got a phone number for her to call - when she did they told her that they couldn't help her because it was a free account. How do you deal with this when someone hijacks your account and changes your zip code?!?!
I guess the only recourse is to open a gmail account and hope Google doesn't turn into d*cks like Yahoo! did.:(
I just upgraded this morning (before the/. story - maybe I should play the lottery today:) and it's really an improvement over the previous beta release (1.9.5x??). Scrolling text/pictures no longer flickers like crazy and even editing text is much more less bothersome. However, it has crashed once and I have found some bad i18n on a couple of tool-bars.
So far I like it better than 1.1.3 and that's saying something!
I am currently doing some computer volunteering at my children's school and I am trying to lead the charge with OSS. Money and support is tight, so OSS sits pretty well with everyone in charge.
My first project was putting in a firewall. They were running pretty much wide open before I got there. I slapped IPCop on a spare box they had laying around and changed the whole nature of their network (for the better:). They are now running DHCP (no more hardcoded IPs), Squid, and have a content filter (required by management). In fact, they have outgrown the hardware and I am going to be replacing it soon with a rackmount server from eBay.
Next up is a web server - I am using Metadot to build an information portal. The plan is to use it for general school stuff intially. Then, after everyone gets a little more comfortable with the idea, we are going to open it up to the teachers to add their own content. Pretty cool!
They are currently running Windows and are having a hell of a time trying to keep them running. The computer teacher is spending more time fighting fires than teaching! The next big thing I am going to pilot is putting Linux on the desktop, probably by using something like K12LTSP. All I have to do is isolate and confirm those few Windows only programs that are required (grading software, library software, etc.) After I get those running on Linux (Win4Lin or something) we will be good to go with a terminal server rollout.
Have you tried any of the OSS DOS emulators on the 'net? Some of the first Google hits are DOSBox (looks really good and focused on gaming), DOSEMU (hmmm...is it still updated?) and the big boy FreeDOS (very active community).
I haven't tried any of these personally in quite a while so YMMV.
Funny - and insightfull! Seriously, one of my main activities of a typical work morning is to print off 2-3 articles on/. and head off to the "library". I keep regular and keep up on the latest.
I really, really like(d) Zinf. It's small, lightweight, plays OGG format, but the media catalog managment is horrible. The real nail in their coffin is that their Windows version is lagging behind the Linux version due to lack of developers.
Since I am forced to use Windows @ work, I choose iTunes and it is quickly becoming my favorite for the sheer ease of use of the catalog! I love it! So, maybe now some of the Winamp guys can go help Zinf and I can move back to something warm and comfy (and OSS:).
People aren't going to be lugging around terabyte-sized password database files.
But they wouldn't need to. All you need is a telnet client and a network connection. And there is no reason that one couldn't add to the existing files.
In fact, this would be a really cool project to break up into pieces. Bob takes everything starting with A|a, Steve takes B|b, etc... Then just build a front end (accessable via telnet) that passes each query off to each back end and returns the results. You could even hack together a simple Java client that would bang against an LM password file. Instant cracking tool - cool!
I get the same thing. I think this is the desired behaviour. Mozilla/Firefox treats NTLM just like any other authentication scheme and prompts you for UserID/Password. I don't think it was ever designed to be single sign on like IE, it just lets you authenticate to NTLM based sites.
Hmmm... the new interface seems to resist pushing buttons from Firefox 0.8. Whenever I try to delete a message by pushing the "Delete" button at the top of the page it just sits there. Actually, none of the buttons work except the "Spam" button. And they don't graphically depress anymore. Actually, it kinda sucks - I dont really know if I pushed the button or not as it doesn't respond to clicks.
I confirmed this on both Linux and WinXP. Is anyone else having this trouble? Where do you report these kinds of issues to who (webmaster@yahoo.com?)?
Otherwise, I think it's great! Maybe they decided that I didn't really need to delete my messages since I now have so much space.:)
I spout this to everyone I know that likes gaming. When they ask my what I game on I always say that consoles are the best thing to happen since sliced bread. Why? I don't have to worry about incompatabilies or the upgrade treadmill. With PCs, there is always a new video card or processor or more memory to purchase. No thanks!
I think this XNA stuff is some pretty cool "Out Of The Box" thinking, but ultimately I want to game on my big screen TV in my living room. I don't have time to "play" at work or when I'm driving or shopping. That's what my couch is for.:)
I have been wondering lately how someone would search on domain names. I want to be able to type in a portion of a domain name and get a list of every domain that matches that. I know I can get info from WhoIs, but it doesn't do wildcards, does it?
Also, I think it would be really cool to be able to use Google to search for parital domains. That way you could rank the domains and narrow down your search naturally. Wouldn't it be nice to find all of the domains with "slash" it it? Or even "tgp" or "thumbs".;)
Wow, this looks like a GREAT system for a Linux Terminal Server Project K12! I would love to be able to order a bunch of these and put them in our classrooms. Should be quiet enough and if not, we can yank the hard drives out of them and maybe make cheapo a RAID box out of them.:)
Anyway, I priced a basic system with a refurbished 15" flat screen monitor at $589. Not too shabby for a complete flat screen system. And then get a slightly beafier, headless one for the server for about the same price. Good stuff!
Ok, I am a part-time admin for a small private elementary school system and we are having "issues" with the older students getting into the younger students sub-directories and messing with their stuff (deleting , editing, etc.) We are a Windows shop and are not running any sort of directory (AD, LDAP, etc.), each student logs in as "student" and accesses a shared network drive containing all of the grades as sub-directories.
What I want to know is would something like OS X Server allow us to have authenticated logins for each student and still allow us to use everything from Win9x -> XP? Is there another solution, perhaps OpenLDAP on Linux, that would work just as well? We are trying to save money and reoutfitting the entire school with WindowsXP so we can use A.D. is not feasable! Actually, upgrading the server to Windows 2003 would probably cost too much as well due to the number of CALs required.
Also, can OS X Server be admined without a OS X Client? We don't currently have any Mac products on the floor (weird, huh) so I would have to either purchase a new Mac (hmmmm...that's not bad) or admin the server from a Windows or Linux machine. Is this possible?
Ummm...actually, I just got out of a week of PeopleSoft training and I got a free lunch every day! We had Pizza Hut on Mon & Thurs (leftover on Fri), cold cuts on Tues. and KFC on Wed.:)

Wow! That's a little more, umm, involved than I was thinking. That thing costs $30k - $50k US! Yea, a $1000 mower is looking better all the time.
Yea, I know, but the _idea_ is sound (I think). It would probably have to be another color, but that can be arranged.

Hmmmm...I gotta go now...

Damn it! How could I be such a noob! :/ You are correct of course. I just tried it on my "other" browser (I.E.) and it didn't work the same way.
:)
