Cruise on over to NooFace to check out some news on UI design. This guy started this Slashdot cloned space so that we could discuss alternate user interfaces. It looks pretty promising, just needs a few more users.

One thing I am interested in is getting rid of WIMP. I don't know what to replace it with (if I did, I would probably be a rich/famous man!), but I tend to like the zooming interface concept. This is where everything is all laid out in a single plane and you just zoom in and out on different areas to get where your going.

No, it has to be cheaper than a comparable x86 board. I'd say that if this thing costs much more than $150 (bare, no CPU) it wont sell at all. At around $200 (board + CPU) I would probably pick it up just to relive my good old Amiga days in a new light (and with some decent speed, damnit!).

Although, some of the coolest things about the Amiga (different resolutions on the same screen!) were directly attributable to the custom chips. And in the article it talks specifically about not having support for the custom chips. :(

Well, having ASP.NET is very convenient to move applications and components from Windows and deploy them on Linux or Unix systems. So I think that this is a plus on its own.

Do you honestly think that Microsoft will allow this? Sure, they say it's great now, but what about in a couple of years? What are they going to sell?

Desktops? No, Windows is now just a dumb terminal front end to .Net servers. Might as well use Mozilla & Mono.

Oh, ok then, they will sell servers. No, all the .Net stuff will run on Linux/Solaris/OS390/etc.

So, Microsoft wont be selling desktops and they wont be selling servers. That makes sense. What is the angle here? What money making scheme am I missing? Are they holding back on some prime APIs or maybe all the .Net classes are under some patent.

When Katz was in charge, PKWare's programmers often would work on new features that they found interesting rather than targeting specific needs of potential customers, Kennedy said.

"In some cases what they did was successful, but in many cases what they did wasn't anywhere near successful," he said. "The company from this standpoint now is market driven."

This is the most disturbing part of the whole story. I think that PKWare will die a slow and painful death as all the "interesting" ideas get thrown on the floor. Why do companies think that purchasing a successful company and then changing the basics around how they operate will make them grow?!?

Yea, making the company "market driven" is going to work.
