'I've even heard that a $400 Ipod costs about $12 to manufacture... can anyone confirm this?'
Not a chance in hell. The drive alone is probably half if not more of the overall price, then you have to add in the electronics, LCD, etching the back metal plate, assembly...
'Virgin Player Another newcomer to the digital player arena is Virgin. Their first portable is the 3.1oz Virgin player, half an inch lighter than the iPod Mini's 3.6oz. The player also offers an extra GB of space coming in at 5GB for the same $250 price tag.'
Emphasis mine.
Anyone care to explain how 'half an inch' converts to ounces?
You say that now, but once you start working with that type of equipment every day, you get lazy.
They had used the TOC a few days prior, and there was no documentation that the bolts had been removed, so they assumed that it was fine. If some that other project team hadn't forgotten the documentation this wouldnt've happened.
'Yeah, right, 'cause we always execute our voice mail messages!'
And we used to think:
Yeah, right, 'cause we always execute our mail messages!.
Then look what OE brought us.
Or:
Yeah, right, 'cause we always execute our webpages!
IE.
Or: Yeah, right, 'cause we always execute our scroll bars!
Again, IE.
Or: Yeah, right, 'cause we always execute jpegs!
Microsoft.
If it's technological and has software behind it, consider it to have a vulnerability. What we think can't happen now may very well happen not so far in the future.
'which has a shape...surprisingly similar to an iPod...
...you mean a rectangle?
The sad thing is, someone modded that Insightful...
:)
Hey, mod! Yes, you! Leave Slashdot immediately!
You do NOT belong.

From the story

Oh god...the dirty jokes.
'Complete with the original tying errors. '
heh.
And the story you mention is here.
...whether or not he frequents Slashdot.
:-)
Seems important to me, anyway
They've pretty much just released the 4th gen; no way they're coming out with a 5G so soon.
Simple as that.
Could you speak in an unofficial capacity, via email ? :-)
If you can, please do email me; I'd like to know more about this case.
I don't work for Honeywell proper, but for Datalynx in the Columbia Honeywell office. You?
:-)
But still, I feel like bitching to someone
God damnit.
I work for Honeywell.
Now, who to vote for, Honeywell or Apple...
Actually, it does.
I just tried it as well.

' i'd rather carry a 10oz device that works vs a 8 lbs device that runs microsoft. '
And who says that it has to 'run microsoft'?
One can just as easily install another operating system on that as any other laptop, you're not locked in to Microsoft...
Yea, I know what you mean.

Just because he wrote an exploit doesn't mean that he's using it illegally.
Can't arrest someone for merely writing a piece of code.
Render /. correctly 100% of the time?
Given, most providers don't do anything to actively find these things, but a thought anyway -
Most ISPs prohibit servers in their AUP/TOS/whatever.
You could face disconnection if you're caught running one (or more). Unlikely, but possible.
The 4G iPods will pause playback if the headphone jack is removed from the socket.

*shrug* Big deal. I've seen well over 400 present (as counted by Ad-Aware).
5-6? Consider yourself lucky that you didn't have to deal with 100 times that amount.
Bend over. :)
They're not forcing you to pay.
You'll still get your patches in the usual Microsoft timely manner (weeks, likely), but these so called 'premium' members will get them a lot sooner.
Things will still appear the same to you, but premium members will get a heads-up before everyone else.
' some of the Debian-based distros (Gentoo, Knoppix)'
Gentoo is not a Debian based distro.
If you consider people in your vicinity mumbling 'fucking idiot' or 'crazy fuck' something interesting, then you may well be surprised.
