One problem with those mini CDs, though - if you encounter a machine with a slot-load drive that can't boot off of USB, you can't boot the drake installation.
Well, you can try, but one would be an idiot to put any other than a full sized CD/DVD in a slotload drive - it may go in, but it probably isn't coming back out.
I know there have been problems with the hardware.
My iBook has had the logic board replaced three times, and four days ago Apple replaced it because the board died again.
The boards that would 'sizzle and die'? Those were in G3 iBooks, not in PowerBooks.
Don't even start with the PowerBook 5300. That happened ONCE, in a TEST LAB, a PREPDOCUTION MODEL, with a DEFECTIVE BATTERY. No 'flaming powerbooks' were ever released to the public.
Visiting relatives in Manhattan (I can see Lincoln Center from their apartment...interesting area), I've been scanning with my iBook and KisMAC whenever I'm on the road.
So far, 452 WAPs, maybe 100 or so of them are encrypted
Even if you discount the OS, I love the hardware enough to warrant a switch.
Then again, being mainly a Linux user, I have an equal OS across most architectures out there.
But subtle things, the heartbeat LED when it goes to sleep, or the lit ring around the power adapter's tip, or the aesthetically pleasing cutout on the back of the LCD to allow the light from the CC to shine through.
To think, I used to be a Mac basher until January when I was shopping for a laptop and went straight to Apple.com:-)
Just installed this on my G3 iBook, seems to have all gone okay.
No major speed increases it seems, but I swear the dock seems a bit more responsive then it did before. This is with 384 MB RAM, by the way.
Before the dock would stutter when I opened up my normal amount of apps on boot (6, 7), but now it responds smoothly when I roll my mouse over it (magnification on) and the icons are bouncing.

I have a friend who works at NASA (not like 'Houston, we have a problem!', but a local office in MD).
He was working on deploying some APs at the office, rather configuring them after they had already been set up.
He goes to configure one of them, and finds that the default password doesn't work (that's a good thing, of course). So he yells across the room to his supervisor: 'Hey Jim, what's the password to the AP?'
Jim yells back: 'cumshot'.
For some reason I really doubt that anyone else was aware of that, or he surely would've had to change it.
Well I was under the impression that after three, a sort of 'lemon law' type policy comes into effect.
I was talkign with the guy at the Genius bar at the store in Towson (MD), asked what the replacement policy was for defective units, and that's what he told me. He said 'after this repair (mind you this is the third time it's been sent in) you can call up Apple customer service about replacement of the unit'.
So I can/talk/ with them, not quite sure if I'll get it. I mean, seriously, replacing the logic board three times? That's worthy of a replacement. I know if my server's motherboard failed three times in a row I'd return it or just buy another one...get it replaced, whatever.
We'll see. I'm currently looking around apple's site for policies in this regard.
If you want to contact me, see if I've found anything about this, if you use AIM (any chat client using TOC or OSCAR), my screen name is boredMDer74.
I do hope that you get yours replaced, as do I mine.
Three times now, my Dual USB iBook has been in the shop.
Actually it's in right now, the Apple store can ship it out monday, so I should have it by Friday (hopefully, I have them shipping it directly to my house).
Twice now, the LCD (actually backlight) fails to light on start unless there's an external CRT connected...the second time, it was just random freezes and they replaces the logic board.
This time I'm definitely calling up Apple and bitching at them about this...but if it fails again, they'll replace it likely for a 1 GHz G4 iBook...I think that's the lowest end iBook now. Note that mine is a refurb G3 800 (12").
I can understand the initial failure...maybe the second, but come on, three times?
Eh.
Although I still love apple. Don't ask why. Luckily, I got it in February so it's all under the one year warranty.
I know, not informative or insightful but I was bored and I had something relevant to say. Mods, mod away.
Thanks you for shopping Stargate Computers. Please come again.
Same just happened to me.
:-)
Except it was my fourth time.
Now I'm sitting here, cradling my G4 1 GHz, with a combo drive instead of the regular cdrom on my G3
And I was told I'd get a free airport extreme card to make up for the Airport card I had in my G3.
Still waiting for that to ship, though.
Pop it open, take out the LED.
Problem solved.
Or masking tape, that works.
Well I'm 17, and have, and I find it amusing.
*shrug*
My father's 48, and he finds it amusing as well.

OS X was going to include home directory on iPod support, but it was dropped late in the development cycle.
Might be a feature of Tiger.
There has been problems with SOME hardware. And no, the PowerBooks weren't defective, none of the consumer available ones, anyway.
You seem to equate 'hardware' with 'PowerBooks'.
We all know Apple has problems too.
It's people like you who bring up crap flamebait like that 'flaming books' story that are zealous in the pursuit of bashing Mac users.

The PowerBooks haven't been defective, it was a bad batch of batteries. iPod batteries die, yes, but so does every other battery, eventually.

I don't use it, I just never deleted it.
Not a chance in hell.

AFAIK only the G3 dual USB's were affected.
You should be good with the current batch of G4 iBook's.
Get one, you won't regret it...

Hmm, maybe because 'usr' is an acronym for Unix System Resources, not short for 'user'?
