  1. IBM's Reccomendations on In a Symbolic Shift, IBM's India Workforce Likely Exceeds That In US · · Score: 1

IBM is currently doing an assessment of our company and giving recommendations of what we should change, keep etc.. They have told us we should have at a minimum %40 of development in house (go up from %20) and %60 offshore (down from %80) but ideally it should be 50/50. Hmm sounds like they need to take their own advice and change themselves internally to 50/50 at the ideal....

When I worked at Cabela's, the IS/IT team I was on got a new manager, the first thing he did was call us all into his office and say "Your job here is to make me look good!". It all went down hill from there! This guy went out of his way to screw over his own people for his own gain - in fact he would work in conjunction with another manager in IS/IT to screw his people over. He would act like he wanted to be your best friend and then stab you in the back as soon as he saw an opening. One of the people on his team was working on their bachelor's degree. This guy actually offered to let him "borrow" any of the papers he wrote for his degree to use. Thankfully that individual was smart enough to know A) that was plagiarism B) The manager would "out him" and screw him over quickly - and the individual nicely told him "no thanks". Our team had a higher turnover rate than the Call Center - which is an amazing feat in itself. When I left all that was left were the H1B's and a couple "old timers" with the company. All the -real- talent left and went onto bigger and better things - including myself.

I was APPALLED to learn the ONLY way Microsoft will let you do "secure" web service calls from CRM is using HTTP Basic Auth (over HTTPS if you wish - oh gee how nice of them). They are even unable to do WSSecurity - in fact they don't support it. Gee how many people here couldn't rip apart Basic Auth and get the username/password? I'm sure very few couldn't. I haven't purchased a CD/DVD in years, I have refused to upgrade to Blu-Ray - unnecessary. All the DVD's I do own are good enough. I don't need to see the inside of a persons sweat glad on their face. If I want to listen to a CD or watch a DVD I go to my local Library - they have quite a large enough collection. Besides just about all the new music sounds like cr@p, the new movies are either poor remakes or are just plain cr@ppy movies. I only watch a little TV and that comes in over their air. The big media companies only understand $$$$ - take that away from them and what do they have? If enough people just stopped buying what they are selling you could send them into a tailspin. There are shortages in some areas of the country. For instance in Wisconsin there is a severe shortage of skilled Java developers. I know my company has been looking for 3-4 senior level Java developers and that is just the start. We have had to resort to interviewing people who are right out of college and having to accept it will take them 1-2 years to get "up to speed". I know a couple people we interviewed claimed to have all kinds of Java experience on their resume, but when interviewed they knew about as much as the kids right out of college or less. Right now we are having to use about 75 developers across 3 continents for a huge project we are working on. Why all over the globe. Simple we truly can't find skilled Java developers in the state. We are looking outside the state - but the company won't pay for relocation so that hurts trying to get people in from other states but many won't come to Wisconsin, or won't come if there is no relocation involved. I think if unemployed IT folks -REALLY- want a job - they need to start looking in places they may not have thought about before. Also make big pushes for telecommuting. I know our CIO came to the realization that telecommuting for some positions in IT is doable. So they are working out how they will handle it. They realize that not -all- developers -have- to be "on site". Heck they are using folks in India - so that proves it.
