Media centre PCs will always be the domain of geeks/tech enthusiasts. The mass market for movies/TV via IP is going to be a TiVo type set top box, and DVD/cable/DirectTV is going to be around a long time for everyone else.

I think discs will be around for a few more years as well, however I think the discs that will stick around are DVD not Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Most people don't have a TV set that will let them enjoy any sort of quality improvement by jumping to HDDVD/BR and by the time they do I wouldn't be suprised to see bandwith catch up with HD content.

This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately in regard to AJAX. While it is nifty looking and gives things and edge from an end user perspective as a developer you are (in some cases) putting a lot of logic on the client, and most likely setting yourself up for a lot of debugging headaches in the future. In the case of Microsoft and Google they have the resources to cope with this, but for the rest of us... I dunno, maybe I am completely off base, but my experience trying to debug little things in JavaScript between browsers has no been pleasant, so I am inclined to think more substantial JS would compound things.

Of course it is probable that the frameworks will iron out a lot of this soon for us.

Oh, I'd agree with you there. My last PC (had a brief trist with Apple in between) was a Dell with a 600Mhz PIII and 256MB, and aside from Visual Studio I don't see much difference performace wise between it and my current 2.4/512MB. For web, e-mail, productivity stuff I'd say anything with 500Mhz/256MB is perfectly fine.

In all fairness my experience with Linux distros is about 2 years old now, the Redhat 9 era of things, and I probably did have a ton of things running that didn't need to be.

That comment by Allchin confused me. While 3.6Ghz is today's top level CPU I would consider anything 1.6Ghz or so and greater a current CPU. My laptop is a 2.4Ghz P4 and my work box is a 2.6Ghz P4 and I consider them both completely adequate for my needs. My guess is that for full on eye candy in Vista you'll need a pretty decent video card, but aside from that... And as far as resource useage goes in my experiences with Linux distros they were just as resource intensive as Windows, granted you could pare it down to CLI, but for full on X/Gnome/KDE it seemed about the same to me.

That's what'll happen with home users, but the focus of this article is on large corporate deployments. The forthcoming deployment and management features in Firefox 1.1/1.5 combined with the fact that 2k won't run IE7 should give Firefox a bit of a boost. Home users, for the most part, will get IE7 when they buy a new PC.

The genius of that demo, I think, is that they made it look like it was gameplay, all the way down to the unique jerky POV that the original Killzone had. If I hadn't already been suckered into the hype for the original Killzone (which turned out to suck for the most part), and also played the abysmal Shellshock (same development studio I believe) I'd be very excited. I do think it is pre-render btw, just looks too good.

I'd say the pendulum is swinging towards web apps for most things, making the desktop irrelevant. Open source is part of that trend, but so is MS with ASP.NET. I think Longhorn will do well, but only through attrition. And I have a feeling WinFX, Avalon, etc is going to fall flat on its face, viewed as interesting APIs but left pretty much unused because the web's inertia will have pretty much drained any significant interest in rich client development.

I bought my Inspiron, which came with Windows XP Home, with the intention of running Redhat 9 on it. Even went as far as buying a PCMCIA Prism based Wifi card because Dell's Broadcom based internal ones weren't Linux friendly at the time. That lasted about 3 days. Linux blows as a desktop OS, plain and simple. Everything is a pain in the ass, from ACPI to playing a streaming video. Windows has its flaws, but I don't have to read a HOW-TO to get my laptop to sleep when I close the lid. I have a NAT firewall, I keep Windows patched, I don't do P2P, I run Adaware on occasion. I don't have issues with Windows.

It seems to me that the Centrino brand is much like Microsoft's 'designed for' program, you can use their branding and marketing power but to do so you've got to meet a certain set of requirements. I don't see that as Intel telling anyone what they have to do with their product, they are simply saying this is what you have to do to take advantage of our branding campaign. Same as I can write Windows applications all day long, but if I want to use Designed for Windows XP I have to meet that program's criteria.
