Bah, using the example of the N-Gage is a bad one. It failed because it was designed poorly. If they "got it right" then everyone would be walking around with them. You state all these reasons why being multi-prupose is bad, yet you state an example of a fantastic multi-purpose device in your subject. I know the Slashdot mentality is to put down things that do more than one thing...but that always strikes me as hypocritical...seriously, look at what you are using to access Slashdot. Now to be surprised that gaming consoles are going in that direction is not surprising. Gaming consoles are computers! You still get the advantage of it being a console because every single box is the same hardware so the software companies can focus on making games rather than having to test it on every video driver/processor on the market. People complain that it will add complexity and thus make it easier to break. This argument is weak at best. A machine is only as strong as its weakest component and it is pretty clear that most problems are in the dvd drives failing. Your consoles are not going to gain much more complexity from a hard drive and an internet connection and a few more input/output ports. It honestly isn't a big change from what you have now. What will change is the software written for consoles. It will allow you to do so much more than before. And if you don't care...don't care and just play games on it. Seriously, I know the old delphian knife argument...and if it were true, then we should have an e-mail machine, a web surfing machine, a game playing machine, a word processing machine, etc etc. In summary, consoles are computer and software will allow them to successfully be multi-purpose.

Really, give me a break. So when some company you loves comes out with inferior hardware, that means they care more about fun? I bet you buy in to the whole "graphics does not equal fun" mentality as well. Let me explain to you why this is stupid. Gameplay and graphics are separate. You can have a much better game with worse graphics, no one will argue this. At a certain point, graphics need to advance...so Nintendo will not be coming out with a new 8-bit system. What they are saying is that their graphics are "good enough". That's fine, I won't argue that if I play a gamecube game I am not thinking...oh crap, this thing has horrible graphics. But the way Nintendo states this, it is like they are stating that because they are graphically inferior, they have upped the "fun factor". This is utter bs. Games will be just as fun on the other consoles, but they will just be on more capable hardware. It's clever how they try to make their weakness a strong point...it is just sad how many of you guys fall for it. Nintendo is going to come out with inferior hardware...deal with it. They will most likely be cheaper because of this. This is their real strong point as most parents and people with limited budget will choose to go with Nintendo and their family friendly image.

But let's get real here. All three companies are trying to get you money. Nintendo doesn't exist as an altruistic being trying to bring games to all people of the world. They are out to make a buck. You may buy in to their marketing more, but that just means they got you. How can I say such a thing? Well, the fact that you are saying a console that DOES NOT EXIST is "more fun" than other consoles that DO NOT EXIST pretty much shows how much power they have over you. Listen, I grew up with Nintendo too and have a lot of fond memories. But we live in a multi-console world now. I'll probably end up with all three eventually, but I will certainly get the one that has the games I find most fun. If Nintendo wants me, they need to start getting some quality (exclusive) RPGs again. If they are non-exclusive, I'd rather play it on hardware that can make it prettier on my HD tv.

  8. Re:Consciousness in two places? on Download Your Brain · · Score: 1

Your question really confuses me. It's like asking how do two identical computers be at two places at once? The answer: very easily. Conciousness isn't something that floats around you that is shared with something else. Everything is in your brain. You copy the brain and body perfectly, then you just have another you. The only difference now is where you go from that point on. It's not like copying splits your conciousness. You have two beings with their own conciousness.

The true power of this is that you can copy your brain and put it in a young or android body so that you can extend your life beyond the grave. Having a collective conciousness doesn't really make sense because collective conciousness does not exist for humans and would probably be undesirable. It works for computers because it has a well-defined interface and it was designed that way. For humans, it doesn't make sense. What are we sharing exactly? Storage capacity, message passing, raw problem solving? Other than doing messing passing over a wireless network placed in the brain...I don't see it happening. Hmm, but if you really want to try it in the sense I think you are talking about, start cutting off a piece of someone else's brain, like where they store memory, and then somehow attach it to your brain. If you then suddenly have the memories of the other person...then maybe a collective conciousness could exist if you could just interface them wirelessly (just so you don't have to stay as close as a wire connecting your brains together). That would cause some major problems because in essence the brain is acting as one, but now has to deal with more input than it is used to...as well as we adapt to stuff, it would be fairly hard to multitask the control of multiple selves.

  9. Re:It's a copy on Download Your Brain · · Score: 2, Insightful

Umm, I am pretty sure they won't have a perfect copy of your body at the point in time that your brain was copied. If you knew that copying existed and it was done to you, then as soon as you were "woken up", yeah, you would probably say "what the...why is my body different..oh shit I am a copy". You are assuming that you will be placed in a body at all. It's doubtful it will be biological. You might just be a hard drive with a mic and a web cam.

You are taking this way too personally. Are you sure you aren't a copy? We tend to value originals more than a copy...this is the nature of things. You take better care of your brand new cd more than a copy a friend gave you...cause hey, you can just make more right? So it is not surprising to have the word "just" associated with a copy. While I agree that these new copies should be treated as humans, you know they will be segregated...particularly by religious people because that really messed up their whole belief structure.

Yeah, machines can be pretty darn wonderful...particularly my gaming systems. Oh wait, you are talking about humans...I sometimes question how wonderful we really are. We are fairly destructive...so machines can be horrible as well. Now we have a bunch of machines capable of thinking at high levels but not afraid of death. Now that is really scary. Think Grand Theft Auto scary. I don't care if I get killed anymore in a shootout because my copy will just activate somewhere else.

The problem with copying a brain also is that our mood is effected by the chemicals in our body. Yeah, our brain helps kick off a lot of those reactions but if the body is not a perfect copy, then it seems fairly certain that the body would react differently...like more testosterone would be produced with the new body than the old one. This will cause people to be sort of the same, but have subtle personailty differences. Think if we removed those all together. They probably would lack a lot of the emotions...this could make them excellent people since they will always be even tempered...of they could become cold, careless killers.
