Actually, if you say something like that on any other topic, it isn't interesting, so it doesn't get modded up. That way people who are reading with their filter at 3 won't see those standard opinions. On the other hand, on a mac post, if you say anything slightly negative about macs, you get modded down. Just look at how many more -1s there are when a Mac article is posted. The parent to your post was not redundant, nor was he trolling. I don't even think it was offtopic, more so on topic than many posts that just say how they can't wait to buy a mac, or how good their current mac is...to those I say, "I don't give a shit" (using your words), but they are modded up by the zealots. In any other subject it wouldn't be moderated. He was just pointing out something that was true. At worst, he should have not been modded, I would have said it was insightful. Your post, on the other hand, defended the pro-mac-zealot stance and got modded up...it's rediculous. His point was made with both his own and your post. I like Macs, but the Mac people on here are so annoying it is beginning to make me hate them.
Well, you could write your emulator for the PS2 and prove me wrong...but I doubt that will happen. The stuff you are saying makes a lot less sense than Ondo. You are looking at the specs, not how the hardware is integrated. Specialized tools will always be better than multi-purpose tools for the one thing they are built for. I work with super computers. They are great for running weapons simulations, because that is what they are designed for. You would be pretty disappointed with how it performed with Quake 3. If we were to build a multi-purpose super computer that could run anything (just think of a much much faster PC)and tried to run weapons simulations on it, it would absolutely suck compared to the specialized machine. Even if the multi-purpose machine had 10 (or more) extra t-flops to throw at the problem. The same thing is true with gaming consoles, they are not designed to be general purpose, so their architecture can take advantage of that to play games faster and better than your system. There is more to a system than a CPU, memory, and vid card.
And about the DMCA stuff...if it wasn't illegal before, it is now. Do a google and try to download an emulator. If you can't find any emulator in 3 minutes, you have some serious problems. Why aren't they all shut down?
I am not saying computers suck and consoles rule. I am just saying that there is a reason that they exist and emulating them is far more difficult than you think.
It's not impossible to emulate these systems - the only reason we can't do it right now is the the omnipresent threat of the DMCA.
Don't argue with Ondo...he is absolutely right. We have emulators for game boys, nintendos, etc, so your DMCA argument is BS. The reason why they can't emulate it was made more than clean in all of Ondo's posts. They are designed spefically for games and are able to run them faster and better than a superior PC could EMULATE them. Current PCs are probably not fast enough to emulate a PS2. If anyone was able to do it, THEY WOULD. They aren't shutting down anything. A lot of people out there will write emulators for free because they like the challenge, and thrying to shut that down is like shutting down people sharing MP3s. Once its on the web for awhile, everyone can/will get it.
So, how many people who are upset about this game ever saw Titanic, Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List?
I saw Titanic (a girl friend made me do it years later) and Saving Private Ryan. Neither of those movies are historically accurate recreations. I mean, the Titanic was a horrid love story that was made up. The setting attempted to be realistic. I believe Schindler's List also tried to be accurate (as accurate as anything from Hollywood anyways). These are movies telling stories that many people otherwise would not have known about or are events that interest people. These stories (minus Titanic) are interesting and can teach lessons from the past.
Ok ok, we aren't getting to your point. You don't think people who watch these movies and enjoyed them should be able to object to this game. Well, that is a load of BS. Just because you think they are not consistent, doesn't make them hypocritical. Watching a film to someone can mean one thing, a game that makes you participate killing people in current events is crossing their line on what is morally acceptable. I guess my point is this: you have no right to tell other people what they should think, and if they think this is morally objectional, then they have every right to complain even if they own every movie you listed. One reason they list is profiting off of the deaths that are currently going on. There are surely plenty of other reasons as well. Even if that is there only reason, everybody is a little bit hypocritical, just look at politicians. You expect people reading the games portion of slashdot to be any better? In any case, it is generally a better idea to give your views on a subject rather than just attacking others. Your post just insulted posters and you didn't even give your views on the game, so people can't tell you how dumb your views are back. Bad form!
I am pretty surprised it got us. Our network guys do a really good job of preventing this stuff from getting in. But this one hit us hard. It slowly spread through the network. My co-worker was the first I know who got it. Then it hit mine, then others in my department. It would kill RPC every 15 minutes at first, which caused my machine to reboot. Right before I got rid of it, it was killing it 30 seconds after the system came back up. Fortunately, my brother was reading Slashdot and said "oh, that sounds like the RPC DCOM worm". Sure enough, that was the problem and just had to delete msblast.exe in my registry. And to those of you who have been saying "I don't have a problem, I use a firewall". Well, we are behind a firewall too (one that is managed better than most since we are government) and it still slipped in.
But an obvious reason is that if Sony, Blizzard, or whoever does a server reset, than all those real-life value eq has now disappeared. Imagine you just got everything you wanted for $60 and the server is reset due to some sort of level cheat. I think if people want to risk wasting money, that is fine, but the game companies should not support it. If they did, people would sue Sony for any problems (dupes, resets, cheats, hacks).
"There's no way either us or our daughter would do anything we knew to be illegal," Pate said, promising to remove the software quickly. "I don't think anybody knew this was illegal, just a way to get some music."
This is sad on so many levels. First, of course it is illegal to download music and I am sure at least his daughter knew that. Second, the guy makes it sound like p2p software is the problem and that uninstalling it stops the illegal activity. Just stop downloading and sharing music, the p2p software is perfectly legal. In the grand schmeme of things though, this is just disgusting. The RIAA is going too far, and I will never buy a cd that they profit from again.
Sure. While you are at it, let's put up one for Linux and BSD etc too. We can compare how fast they grow. That would be fun to see. I know this may come as a surprise, but open source OS's have buffer overflows too. But joking aside, it would be interesting to have a tally that shows if Linux really does have less of these problems. The only problem would be coming up with a point system because a minor bug shouldn't be weighted as much as one that allows your system to be taken over.
Whether or not you are getting a new system, doesn't really matter. I don't think this is a major problem that prevents people from enjoying the game. Just people who need every drop of graphical love they can get will care. Sure, it makes things look a little btter...but most people tweak for performance, not looks (or at least find the happy medium). This is just one less variable you will have to worry about.
It would be wise of Valve, I think, to put all necessary resources into getting a fix for this. Since it's probably a bad idea to release a game that doesn't play well with the most popular graphics card.
I would think if nVidia wants me to buy their video card, then they should support the only game I have cared about buying in years. I will be buying a new system on the release of that game, and more and more it seems like I will be going with ATI. nVidia already was behind with the way they altered their drivers to cheat on performance tools (and yes, it was cheating, not optimizing). Now they won't be able to show me HL2 in high quality? It's time to move to a new brand. Bye bye nVidia.
C'mon, it even lists two other players that it is compatible with...you didn't even have to read anything deeper than the article description. This is my point, it's not linux/apple etc, therefore it sucks. Most people don't use mozilla, they use IE and WMP so this will be great for the vast majority. This will leave us users out. So be bitter and just go on pirate the music as usual. I am just happy that this is out and people now have an alternative to buying cds.
I try real hard to see value in any project, but wow...this is pretty nuts (no pun intended). Why not research how depressed people socially interact on the internet, or how they react in relationships? I am sure any of us could come up with a number of much more interesting and beneficial studies. Let's assume he finds people with depression have significantly worse navigational skills. Then what? You haven't improved their lives at all. What do you tell them? I am sorry you are depressed, but don't be surprised if you get lost often too. That will make them feel better. Also, why not just do this in a mall or other large building? Just because computers exist, doesn't mean they should be a replacement for real life. I am sure it is nice just to sit them down at a desk and run the test, but I don't think it would be too hard to do this without the computer. Plus you are adding an extra variable, how good is a person's hand eye coordination? I know lots of people who can navigate just fine, but can't play an fps to save their lives.
/.ers have complained for a long time about not being able to buy single tracks off of an album. I read so many posts that went something like, "The album sucks, but I would pay a buck for that track, but since I can't I will just download it". Everyone cheered when Apple did this. Now someone is doing this for the PC. Outside of slashdot, most people use windows and IE and there are legitimate reasons they do it that way (read the faq...oops, you need IE to do that too..that really is dumb, but read up on a previous post and they snipped it for you). But instead of praising them for attempting to give you this, you attack it because it is Windows. This is why our voice isn't taken seriously. Rather than looking at this as an advance in our ability to choose, you put it down because it isn't Linux or Apple (or BSD, etc). I am sure when PC iTunes comes out everyone on here will say how perfect it is. Give me a break. I am sure Buy.com's site isn't perfect, but at least acknowledge that this is a good thing and that it will be even better when Apple's PC iTunes comes out and there is competition.
I am so with you...I loved FF8's characters. It didn't have a main character that was all up beat and positive. It was mor realistic and moody. I think I'll go play that again....
RTFA:) You take the first and last letter of the descriptions you create from seeing a sequence of ink blots. The odds of that ugly mess of a word being in the dictionary is less likely than an article that all/.ers read before posting.
Ok, this post really bothers me. In any complex system, there are bound to be bugs. I seriously find it hard to believe that if you tackled something as difficult as networking, spent years working on it, would have a finished product that was 100% error free. The word "mature" is just a label. It is meaningless in reality. I agree with you that people should use the right tool for the job, but comparing switching out color pictures for B&W ones and translating code in to C with routing and switching is like comparing a computer that can win at tic tac toe to a computer that can't be beat at chess. The fact of the matter is, Cisco is used by millions for their networking needs. If you think you can produce a more "mature" product that miraculously has no bugs then please do so. I guarantee you will be a rich man. The unfortunate thing is, that most likely by the time your system is mature, Cisco will have a product out that makes your device obsolete.
Contacting the President should be a process simple enough that anyone in the USA, even those with limited technical, communication, and cognitive abilities could perform.
It isn't like they took away the option of sending snail mail. If you got as much mail in a day as that address did, I would imagine you would want to implement something to help reduce the amount of junk and increase the odds of getting valid information. If people can't use the web or snail mail, they have deeper problems.
My philosophy on this was to wait to buy a new computer. Once half-life 2 is released, I will get the fastest computer out (processor, vid card, ram, hard drive, etc). That way I will be "safe".
It may not have a good reputation in the U.S., but in a lot of other countries, they love the stuff. I bet to the British, Monty Python's skit about the person who doesn't want SPAM was funny because they couldn't believe there was someone that actually didn't like SPAM.
I didn't say it was the Iwill, I said it was something like it...but I can understand why you would be skeptical about that. His is a lot taller than an Iwill and able to hold standard hard drives. I was just trying to say the Iwill could be used in a similar way. I apologize for my lack of clarity.
A friend of mine has something like this. It is a great thing to take to a LAN since it is so portable and can hold a ton of data. He has a 240 GB drive in it and he shares games, movies, etc. But you are probably right, this won't take over the market...though it may be time for desktops to get smaller.
But you could have just stated the whole article by adding, "Acclaim noted that Cousens comments were taken out of context. Cousens was just explaining how Acclaim is re-evaulating what consoles to release their games on." So in other words, this is a bit of a non-issue. If they can profit on the gamecube, they will, if they can't, then it won't be supported.

But I also have a job, two kids, a wife who likes the wild monkey sex at times - and every so often, I have to travel.
I am fine with the whole wife thing...but do you have to involve your work and kids in the monkey sex too?
