  1. Re:Wow on Bid On eBay To Speed Up Your Commute · · Score: 1

Maybe you are right...but that seems a little too cynical to me (and I am pretty darn cynical). I think it could be like this: carpool lanes are pretty empty because people don't want to be bothered by the inconvenience of coordinating their schedules. State notes that the carpool lanes could take XXX number more cars and still be fast and also reduce the total traffic. They offer tickets based on bids, so they get the most money out of it. Hopefully some bill will specify exactly how it should be spent, like on roads or education. True, rich people are going to get the stickers, but it is like a tax on the rich, as opposed to the poor, total traffic bottle necks are decreased, state coffers have a little more spending money, etc. It seems like this isn't the worst idea in the world. People without the sticker can benefit from less people in the "old" lanes for their commute.

I doubt you even heard of FreeCraft. So you are just complaining that you didn't get to LAN the game easily. If there is no problem getting a pirated version, just do that and don't complain. Why in the heck should they trust the customer? Why doesn't the government just trust you on how much tax you are paying? Because people are dishonest. Quit living in this little idealistic world where people are good. If people can get away with stealing software, a lot of them will. If companies want to survive, they have to protect themsleves.

This isn't Microsoft buying up a competitor so that it can strengthen its hold over another sector of computing, this is a company suing others when it really can't back up its claims. If they win, they will win because they confuse people enough, because it is a difficult thing for non-technical people to understand. The "Just" and fair and right thing would be for them to lose.

Most people on slashdot post on a variety of subjects...you just seem to pop up every time a segway article appears with a link to a picture of yourself on your segway. I imagine on the next segway article you will do the same...and on and on and on. You are not really doing anything useful posting your same tired site up again every time a segway article appears. I can't really blame you since you get modded up. Someone is rewarding you for it. I guess this is my way of making it unpleasant...because I don't think someone should take some specialized item, and every time that item appears post a link to themselves, and get rewarded for being that redundant. It seems others don't really appreciate it either. In any case, it is good to see that you stand up for what you like, despite popular opinion. I think I would admire this more, but it just has a false feel to it...like there is an ulterior motive...like profit from PR or attention hunger despite your claims that you are just a happy customer.

  9. Re:Patents vs. Unemployment on How to Become a Patent Millionaire · · Score: 2, Insightful

That sounds good on the surface. But the problem with your scenario would be that if the person is unable to make a prototype (because it is too expensive for him to make personally) he/she will have to pitch it to companies. If the companies know that it will expire, they just refuse him/her and then snatch the patent when it becomes available. This saves them money and screws the inventor. The auction idea would be nice though, because if companies actually like the idea, they compete with each other driving up the price and the inventor will still benefit. Of course, all the companies can agree to share the patent and just offer the minimum bid...once again screwing our poor inventor. I guess I really don't see too much of a problem with the current system unless someone is actually trying to block a prototype from being made (like some abortion technology that an anti-abortion person gets the patent for and refuses to let anyone use because it is against their beliefs) or is not accepting reasonable offers in order to make more money while ofthers suffer (cure to cancer patent would be an example).

Plenty of things don't even make it over from Japan. Or maybe you get that impression because a lot of the games that come over from there are very popular. Maybe if the US tried harder, items like the X-box would have a market over there (complete failure by x-box with controller design etc) and everything from the US would be viewed as gold. We already do that with movies. In any case, find a less offensive way to make a point.

If you really wanted a good, simple map for paintball you could do de_snipeit (I think that's the name).

We expect everything to talk, feed itself, and stick effortlessly to the ceiling all the while being secure. The government (DoD, DoE, etc) is probably one of the biggest users and innovaters of open source so I wouldn't get too feisty. The only reason people (managers) get a little hesitant about Open Source is blame. When something drops on the floor, they want someone to point the finger at, someone we have a contract with so that they can fix it reducing personal liability. 25. Re:Segway Rant on Have You Seen This Segway? · · Score: 1

You do understand that this model won't work for most people, right? It is very rare for anyone to save time going along on a Segway to make better time than driving in a car. One case I imagine is in a big city, living a few miles from work...maybe you can save a little bit of time that way. I will concede that instances do exist when that works out. The math part is still rediculous though. I am hoping you are removing the cost of the segway payment to your car payment, but it doesn't look like you are. You must have some pretty crazy coverage or have tons of tickets if you are paying $150 a month in car insurance on one vehicle. $120 in parking would be about $6 a work day. Sure, I can see that...it is unfortunate that you would have to pay to park where you work though. So let me get in to the problem I have with all this. It doesn't look like you factor in the high cost of purchasing the segway. I really really don't see how much time you could possibly be saving if you are traveling on that thing 4 miles each way. It must be really tough traffic and the sidewalks must be pretty clear. The claim that it actually makes you in better shape drives me crazy. The fact is that you made a decision to jog more. The time you earned from going both ways gave you more time to jog...ok...so could cutting down on tv, movies, drinking, etc. The segway isn't making you lose weight, you are. Most people at my company ride their bike to work and bring their work clothes along in a separate bag...that gets them in better shape. The segway does nothing, unless you want to subtraact the more calories you burn standing than from sitting in a car. The thing that bothers me most is that you actually put a website up about this thing. Who devotes a website on how they get to work? It only says good things too...it just reeks of getting paid. I guess I am cynical, but just because you put a disclaimer up there, doesn't mean I can believe you. What about the pain it is to store at work, or how people point and throw things at you, or how much it sucks when it is raining or is windy. Maybe it's not about money...just attention...but like I said, it may be a model that works for you and I am glad it has worked out for you...but the claims of how wonderous it is..."it saves money, gets you in better shape, saves time, and is econmoically friendly" is just silly.
