So now you are posting as an AC and putting up your own site...BS meter is going crazy again. Why in the world would you include cost of car payment in there. Why don't we subtract cost of the segway from that. So a segway (kinda) costs less than a car. So if you want to add that...I would have to laugh...because you get so much more from a car. You can drive it in the rain, long trips, take more than 1 person. Sure, I can't take it inside the park or my house...but guess what, I can walk! I am not saying segway isn't useful for some people...but for the other 99% of us, it is useless. You can show all the statistics, math, personal experiences (just like you see with worthless diet pills) but the fact remains that it is not useful or affordable.
Riiiiiiight. So you are in better shape because of your segway...that's a good one. So how long have you been on segway's payroll? I was getting pretty fat too...then I started watching hockey on tv...now I am fit as a fiddle.
Saved over $600 a month? What kind of fuzzy math is that? How can it give you more time? A car goes much faster than a segway, therefore it will get you there faster (in most cases). Unless you are using it for short commutes, in which case your saving $600 figure makes no sense (ok, it didn't make sense to begin with). I mean, I am sure someone likes segway somewhere, but seriously...isn't this reading high on anyone else's BS meter?
But there is always someone who will ruin it by playing games all day instead of working. Then policy will be passed to ban all games from work computers.

Not really...if you look at any basic AI class the theory is that you need to have something that can physically interact with the world to create true AI. Minsky belongs to a different camp and doesn't like where the field is going. If he truly believes it is going nowhere, then he should step up and take it somewhere rather than complaining about it. The fact is his way didn't work and this is the new way that so far has shown the most promise.
I am sure I am probably missing something, but since this stuff is freely distributed to all of us and not the highest quality, wouldn't this be a simple legal way to record and trade music. I know I am ignoring the ads that we wouldn't be hearing that fund the radio station....but that really has nothing to do with RIAA. So would this be legal?
I doubt this'll be useful for prerecording shows (due to car battery drain of running all the time)
I really don't intend for this to be mean...but I think you are missing the fact that radios don't require a car.:) I am sure you can imagine these things can be plugged in to a wall outlet and receive radio signals independant of your car. So clearly, they would be useful to pre-record shows...and that is probably what most people would use them for. But I do agree, having rewind in your car would be cool, but then again...it might be another distraction that causes people to crash in to each other.;)
I doubt that ad was 300k and used flash to play for 15 seconds. Sure, the screen was big, they may even have made it really really difficult to close...but this is new...though I have seen a few viruses that do a similar thing. A girl I dated opened some attachments and it played a 15 second thing of fireworks or southpark or the like and then I get a phone call because her computer is freaking out. The cute ones always have the most trouble with their computers:/ In any case, virus or 15 second ad...it's all the same to me: unwanted.
I am not a Bush fan...but come on. You think the UN wanted to go in there for purely humanitarian reasons and it had nothing to do with econmoic gain? It's easy to take cheap shots, but be objective.
Man...a little touchy...aren't we? Just because the current U.S. "regime" is basically run by a bunch of war hawks and our government has a lot of problems deciding if it is run by the people for the people or by the liars for the corporations doesn't mean Americans are sitting over here wallowing in our "hubris and arrogance". So fine, "[t]he world is NOT dominated by a ProCorporate, ProCompetition, ProSelfishness Worldview that is commonplace in America." Then what are you complaining about? It's only really a problem to you if that worldview is commonplace. I really don't want to piss you off, but if you are trying to make a point that people can relate with, then maybe come off a little less arrogant yourself. So the US attacked Iraq, now it is a "Wholly Owned Subsidiary of Corporate America". Ok, so I guess Britain had nothing to do with the war...but in any case...did you see how fast France and everyone else wanted the UN to control how the Iraqi government was formed. Were they worried that America might do as you say? Of course not...that's just naieve. After the war was won so quickly, everyone jumped at a piece of the Iraqi pie. They want the UN in so that the people who fought in the war didn't get the biggest piece. The simple fact is governments are run to protect the economic interests of their nation (modern ones anyway). Another simple fact is that government is run by humans, and those human have tupical vices and are usually the type that want to build wealth and power for themselves too. Maybe if you laid off the insults and actually made points that were thought out a little (I am sure America views Canada as a potential threat *cough*), your thread wouldn't have ticked me off so much. If you didn't have a right to "keeping what is yours" then I am sure you wouldn't mind if we come over and take your computer and other belongings, right?:) I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though and assume you meant it in the context of the crappy IP laws we have, in which case I agree: it "is NOT a basis on which to found a Community"
A lot of people are complaining that none of these people would actually turn themselves in (obviously). So let's take advantage of their greed. Send them a single message saying, "Congratulations, you won --insert trip/money/etc--. Meet us at --insert location-- to pick up your prize." Now all you do is set up a fake award place and when you take them to the back room, you arrest em...problem solved. I saw this done on some TV show that demonstrated techniques cops used to safely arrest people who have violated their parole.
If you look at the archived slashdot pages, when something historically significant occurs, Slashdot will post it. Check out Sept. 11th for an example.
Someone said it earlier, Slashdot does public discussion very well. I am glad that Taco posted this. It is interesting to see what other slashdotters think and I am sure it is a benefit to a lot of people out there who want to talk about how they feel. In general, I agree with you...Slashdot should not be political. But when something as significant as this or Sept. 11th occurs, I think Slashdot is doing a great service to us by posting these articles and let us express how we feel.
Therefore, as human beings, those who run google have moral and ethical obligations to protect the free flow of information
I just can't agree with this. Unlike other replies, I do agree that it damages the exchange of ideas...sure they can still go to the site, but if they depend on google to find those sources, they will not know they exist. But if some government wants to ban a site that teaches you something rediculous, like how to abuse your children and not leave marks so you don't get caught, wouldn't it be moral and ethical to block such a site. Moral and ethical does not always equal freedom of speech and ideas. If a government decides somethings is harmful to its people, they will try to stop this information. Not everyone believes in absolute free speech as most (some?) people do in slashdot (and isn't freedom of speech allowing for people who believe freedom of speech is dangerous?). In any case, I think if it is a problem, it is up to the people of Germany to stand up against this policy. If the German people approve of this censoring, then we really have no right to tell them they are wrong.
When your skill sets consist of things that most 14 year olds do for fun, then yeah, you are going to have a tough time finding a job. Industry has less of a need and more numbers of web developers, so it is not surprising. What do you do? If you can, go back to school, get certified in Cisco (or anything that companies find useful these days)...make yourself more marketable by having skills that aren't already mastered by uneducated teens. We all got spoiled when the tech industry exploded. People doing very little, easy work got rich. Now we have to earn that pay check. So work hard and good luck out there.
As much as I don't like MS...I have to admit that Freelancer is just good old classic fun. It's on one cd, has an interesting single player, and multiplayer. Sure, they stole the idea for from another old game....so you can still dislike them....but dang, what a quality game.
No, it isn't backwards. They don't scrape it once a day or something...airfares change quickly, I bet you the scrape it every few seconds so they have an up to date page.
I understand the need and want for internet resources to be free, so maybe that sways some people to say that it is ok to scrape an airline's website...but it just isn't the case. To make an (imperfect) analogy, this is just like spam. A lot of bandwidth and effort is used to try to filter out the unwanted hits while allowing the full bandwidth to go to legitimate customers. If more people begin to scrape AA, service degrades abd they can lose customers (a good argument against this point is that they are still selling the tickets and making a profit, just that this other site is making money off of their efforts).
That being said, I think their are simple technical solutions to this like just using some sort of random number letter generator that creates a blurry human readable (but not computer readable) representation and make the users enter that in to get airfare.
Just for fun, click on farechase's link a few times and see if they enjoy losing bandwidth. It has a sort of simple irony to it.
I work for SNL (the lab, not the tired old comedy show). Sandia is hiring right now and looking for talanted people in many technical backgrounds. Go to www.sandia.gov and go to the employment tab. The pull down menu has student programs so click on that. It may be too late for a summer internship but there are still year round internships. They pay pretty well. Not as much as some jobs, but the cost of living out here is half, so really, you are getting more. Good luck out there.
Can anyone then explain which is the better buy, especially after I pay for the DSL connection from home, and the blank CD?
Sure I can. It's a better deal because you are only paying for the songs that you actually like. If every song on an album was equal, your math would make sense. But very few albums have more that 2 songs that you would actually care to listen to. So now you spend 2 bucks for the songs you like instead of 10.65 for an album of mostly worthless songs. You can download lyrics, notes, and go buy a case and a cd-r if you really want to have something physical. My computer is my stereo so the only reason to burn is to backup.
Having the sender pay for bulk e-mail to stop spam is a nice idea, but I don't see how it can work. First, this will just encourage spammer to hack in to others accounts and e-mail from there. So poor grand ma is stuck with a bill for mail she didn't send (even if she gets her money back because it was hacked in to, it would take a lot of time and money for the ISP to actually investigate that). Second, how do you define bulk? Mail that goes out to more than 20 recipients? If that were the case, they would just generate messages that had 19 recipients and move on to the next chunk. Maybe it can be done by the number of messages per hour. In any case, this would need to be defined, and I am sure wherever that bar is set, the spammers will go right under it. Last, how do your protect legitimate bulk mailers. My mother runs a non-profit dance club with 800 or so members. Everyone on her list has requested to be sent the mail, would she still have to pay the bill?
Overall interesting, I just would like more info on the details...or if the details can't answer those questions, start thinking now.
I agree. If we could get the RIAA to lower cd prices to something reasonable for similar reasons, there would be less of an excuse to download them. I also like applying the idea of debundling software packages to cds. That way we can pay 1/14th (fraction made up) the price for the songs we actually want to listen to. Note this all started with the government cracking down on piracy. Would it take a similar crack down here in the US before people start complaining enough to get cds to reasonable prices?

Nope, entrapment is defined as: a person is 'entrapped' when he is induced or persuaded by law enforcement officers or their agents to commit a crime that he had no previous intent to commit; and the law as a matter of policy forbids conviction in such a case. They are not getting them to commit a crime, they already did that, they are just getting them to turn themselves in.
