Project much? People who go buy a car don't see people suffering. Actually, we suffer because we have to deal with car salesman. We are so far removed from any suffering it really says nothing about the culture that we ignore it. If when we bought a car, they made us whip children and fire old people right before they got their pension, then maybe that would say something. I think your opinion about the U.S. shows us more about your issues than the other way around.
Not going to happen. The Wii, while great, does not have the processing power of the other two consoles. Not only would they have to port the controls, but they would have to port the graphics and AI down to the Wii level. So people with multiple consoles would not buy the Wii version because it would be limited too much. On the other hand, what you suggest would make it easier for them to port Wii games to the other two consoles as the 360 and PS3 could handle anything that the Wii plays.
Ultimately it means that the PS3 and 360 would get the party games of the Wii...while game companies that want to make games for the PS3/360 would just stick with that platform. I think Nintendo will probably have to come out with a new console here before MS and Sony so it can catch up on capabilities and then you might see ports in the Nintendo direction as well.
1. Maybe you mean when they update the game? OS updates don't change anything. But in any case, you just download the update to the crack.
2. Macs can play many games as well...and as far as total marketshare, PCs still rule...in any case, you don't really have a point for the majority for users. The minority can play on consoles...still doesn't make PC gaming terrible as the GP post was replying to.
3. You don't know what the fuck you are talking about. I have a Masters in C.S., so maybe this is obvious because of that reason, but I really think any moron should be able to figure out that consoles are just locked down PCs. The PS3 is "harder to code for" because it has a cell processor (like what computers) have. It is more challenging to get the most out of systems that process things in parallel. My brother writes games for the 360. The games he writes can be played both on the PC and the 360 WITHOUT HAVING TO PORT IT.
I'd suggest you shut up and read if you ever want to post about this topic again. You are completely ignorant of what you are talking about and are just making a fool of yourself. Gaming is great both on the PC and on consoles. It's fine if you prefer one over the other...then just play it. Telling someone else that their form of entertainment sucks just because you can't afford a good gaming rig or can't figure out how to update your graphics card driver is just lame.
Oh come on...PC's don't excel for gaming? It sure as hell does for RTS's and FPS's. The graphics are better, the input allows for more complex games, and you have access to FREE downloads and mods. If a PC and a console has the same game, often you have to pay for the mods where they are free online...and you don't even have access to many user created mods.
Listen, I am a big fan of gaming. I like to do it both on the PC and the consoles...they both have advantages and disadvantages. Saying PCs are terrible compared to consoles is just flat out stupid. If you are too poor or mentally slow to figure out how to play games on the PC, you have more to worry about than gaming.
There is always something that can improved upon. If not graphics, then number of enemies that can be show on a screen. More processing power allows for more complex AI. There is always a disruptive technology that we don't expect that drives something in another direction. Maybe it will be holographic games. Maybe it will be a console that links directly to your brain. Possibilities are endless.
This is true, the Wii has won. But on a personal level, for me the Wii controller is a bit like the dumb standalone baseball games you can buy. It is fun for the mini-games, but really isn't as engaging for traditional games (like the ones I grew up with on the Nintendo). I like "normal" controllers. I like to lounge back on my sofa and play a console game. To me, the Wii has a weak lineup of traditional games other than their first party titles. I am very pleased with my 360 and the games it has. My friends all have Wii's which were fun at first, but all seem to be collecting dust now after the novelty has worn off. I really hope that Nintendo continues appealing to the casual gamers, but I don't want MS and Sony to go too far over that way. If everyone has to have motion controllers, it takes away the ability to play games the way I want to play it. I don't want to jump around like an idiot to play an RPG. I am glad these will just be addons and not replace the standard controller. Otherwise, I'd probably just stick with PC gaming.
This is true of any industry. We had great storytellers in the past. It was only one person and they could let their creativity shine. Now we have movies which takes hundreds if not thousands of people to make. Are movies less artistic than storytelling? I'd argue no...that it depends on the storyteller/movie. Final Fantasy 7 took more developers that any 8-bit Nintendo game did. Was it less artistic? I'd argue no...that no previous game had an emotional impact on me as much as that game at that time. So I disagree with you. Less technology makes it easier for individuals to express themselves. More technology means more people which means less personal individuality, but there is the individuality of the game companies and developers with other companies. Games are just as good now as they were then...despite the technology.
No where did I state that 8-bit games could not be quality. I am saying that the old Nintendo would not allow you to make some of the great current gen games.
Yes, but a less powerful system allows for exactly the same things. So the 8 bit nintendo is capable as much immersion as the 360? Bull shit.
Your argument is arguing against the progress of technology. The Wii is selling so well right now...why should we ever update it? If artists were good they could cram every type of new game under the sun in there, right? Forget better AI or better facial emotion portrayals. They should go back to all being 8 bit...artists these days suck?
The Wii didn't do better because it has worse graphics. It did better because it had a new controller scheme and was priced much lower than its competitors. Games that can be played on the PS3 and 360 have to be stripped down to be on the Wii...so often games on other consoles pass porting for the Wii.
In any case, I could argue all day on how you are wrong and arguing against a point I never made. But my point is this...great games don't have to have great graphics, but certain games can't be made if technology does not progress. It isn't because the artists suck or people aren't creative, it is just a fact. Arguing against the progress of technology on a tech site strikes me as about the most moronic thing you could be doing.
Some people would rather kick back in their recliner and play a game. Controllers are better for certain games...like fighters and racing games. They work well for RPGs as well. I'd rather play FPS/RTS/MMO with a keyboard & mouse.
Many people also are attracted to consoles because if they buy a game for their 360, they know it will work. They don't have to upgrade video drivers or buy new hardware to get it to run.
I like playing on both and hope that neither is ever abandoned.
Though, maybe in the future game consoles will be the PC and can have both functionality...doesn't seem like it is quite going that way yet though.
I agree with your point on knowing that every other PC is a spy. I thought the same thing earlier. But I disagree that you can't still fell like the protagonist. FFXI gave you cut scenes (that your character was in) that made you feel like you were more the center of attention (like a single player RPG). WoW now is capable of having people on different phases of an area. For example, in one area there is a fort under attack...you do quests to help the fort and actually push back the enemies changing the landscape and action in the area. If I were designing and MMO I would look at these. Some people hate cut scenes though...so the phasing idea might be better...the only negative is people who are in different phases can not interact with each other in that area.
Ugh, you must hate science. Supply and demand is not applicable to everything. I have a lot of computers but I don't have any type writers. That must mean that my demand for typewriters is high, right? That's about as dumb as what you are saying.
Men aren't universally wanted more by employers...there are other fields where women are more wanted. The problem is you can't really talk about this in a general sense and do it actual service.
In any case, you have no data that employers rather have men than women. You are just talking out your ass. Two people of equal skill should be paid the same regardless of race, gender, or sex. If people are sexist or racist, sometimes the government steps in to force them to act ethically. The U.S. would still have slaves, women would not vote, etc etc. This isn't price fixing...again, you are using terms that don't apply here. There is just too much wrong with your post to go in to.
So, you are saying the 8-bit Nintendo is all we ever needed. That's the argument you are making and it is stupid. A more capable system allow for better graphics that can give a more immersive environment as well as having improved AI or capabilities. Every retard knows that better graphics != a better game. But it seems counter intuitive to people on here that increasing the hardware specs can give a developer more options to create a deeper game.
Any artist can make great art with the tools of their time. But you seem to argue against improving those tools...that the tools we have now are good enough. Could you really have Half-Life or Mass Effect or Bioshock on an 8-bit Nintendo? Maybe, but it would not be as fun because it would be so limited. It would be like telling Mozart that all he could use is a tuba and a triangle.
Android will be difficult because it is so open. It is on different devices with different capabilities and people can be all running their own custom OS. This is a limitation for WinMo as well. It isn't one for the iPhone and that is why it has taken off.
Why would you compare it to Windows Mobile? This isn't the desktop market so the comparison isn't meaningful. There are 5 major(ish) players right now in the US. Symbian, iPhone OS, Blackberry, WinMo, and Android. If you look at the iPhone compared to the total marketshare, it isn't as impressive (though it has grown amazingly fast). It will probably do better once it isn't exclusive with the crappy AT&T service. But its prices will prevent it from competing in anything other than wealthy countries. It will be niche in that sense but will be a major player for years to come in the first world market. Nokia is probably going to dominate worldwide with the cheap hardware model.
The problem is that the AI isn't good enough to win without cheating. There will be some strategy it doesn't know how to counter that you can exploit to beat it easily. So very hard becomes easy mode. Cheating is the only way a computer can keep up with human intellect in games as complex as an RTS other than maybe rush strategies which would be pretty unfun to deal with as well.
This problem seems simple because you are thinking on one side of the problem. What you fail to think about is how people will exploit whatever system you put in place. That makes the problem much harder.
As far as loot tables, I agree with you there...drops should be based on what classes are in the instance.
As far as your other ideas, if a group knows some hard instance becomes easy if they die x number of times they will die that number of times to make it as easy as possible to get their loot. Making instances configure themselves based on class make up is extremely hard to balance. It is tough enough to balance an instance in general...but to test it on every possible combination? And you get in to these weird scenarios where a class is not included because you get a harder version of the instance than with other classes. So if you take a hunter, the instance would spawn something that is a pain so now hunters can't find groups. There are all kinds of exploits and side effects for every decision you make...you have to think about these things.
Once again, I think WoW has it right. They allow you to do boss fights in a normal way and you get a few drops. But if you choose to, you can try to do it in a way that is more challenging for better rewards and achievements. For example, once instance you can kill 3 minor dragons and then a major dragon and it isn't too hard. But if you want, you can leave 1, 2, or 3 of the minor dragons up and fight them simultaneously with the major dragon giving you better drops. You give the player the choice on how hard it is and you reward the ones who can beat it at a higher difficulty. Trying to make the computer decide how hard to make it takes away choice and makes it a less enjoyable experience.
Uh, have you never played any other MMO on the face of the planet? I know the WoW hate is strong on this forum...but WoW is pretty much the gold standard on how to run an MMO at this point. Then you have to insult people who play the game as not having common sense? Hmm, probably just a troll. But if you actually believe what you write, you are living in a fantasy world.
Wow, what a stupid post. Sounds like you are bitter about sucking at sports. I work with people who all have Masters or PhDs in C.S. or E.E. A lot of us still play sports since it keeps us in shape and is fun. I played Varsity soccer and tennis in high school. I also played in a couple orchestras. I think having a variety of activities makes people do better in society. Maybe you are smart, but correlating athletics with poor math grades is dumb. Maybe if you played sports you would have better social skills and be more successful.
Because their counter-arguments have yet to refute his argument. Even beyond that, sexism exists (both ways). For it to be a significant problem in FOSS, it would need to be a problem greater than what exists in society already. I don't deny that sexism exists, but is it causing women to stay away from FOSS? I got my Masters in C.S. I only met 2 American females in all of my studies. There are just less women in the field. And people on the Internet are mean and say stupid things no matter what you are. So unless people are not getting jobs or their code isn't accepted solely on the basis of their gender...and this is people just saying stupid things every now and then, I think it is being overblown just to get attention for the author.
Sometimes when you deny something doesn't exist, it actually doesn't exist (or at least in any significant way). Also, sometimes anger is justified. I don't really care what you want to label it. I want to know the facts of the situation. You seem to be too emotionally involved to be speaking from a rational standpoint. So far I haven't seen anything surprising. If I were to post something with my liberal point of view I would receive just as bad. It's the Internet.
You sound like someone who is either a fanboy or work for Eve's PR. 10 seconds might be acceptable lag, anything over 1 minute is pretty ridiculous. It is basically whoever overcomes the lag first is going to win. But the majority of the PvP in Eve isn't epic battles, it is just people sitting at gates killing single ships or a large blob killing stuff exploiting whatever overpowered module the Eve developers failed to play test.
Do your actions effect 300,000 people? No, not really. There are a few people that have an effect on the game and those people are the insanely hardcore. The casual player and pretty much 99% of the population are never going to make any significant sort of impact other than changing the supply and demand of items.
One shard means that the dev cheating effects everyone in the game forever. Certain corporation/individuals will always have the advantage of ill-gotten gains over everyone else.
And your 5,300 continents all look pretty much the same and have nothing different about them. You have a couple of different stations and jump gates depending on what sector you are in and that's about it.
Eve's problem doesn't have anything to do with being single or multiple shards. It is just a really boring game. And this is coming from someone who really wants to love the game. I really want a good space MMO. But once you figure out the game you realize it really is just graphical excel. Combat is as interesting as looking up on the forums what to equip on your ship, going out and finding something to kill, then pushing f1-f6.
Why do people suddenly become retarded when they see the word socialism. Socialism has some positive aspects...as well as negative. Same with capitalism. It's all about finding the right balance. Grouping people up and saying they are all evil is what radio pundits do to profit off your stupidity. So many people blaming so many different things when there are a few very wealthy people pulling the strings and laughing as you dance.
I hope you get modded up. I think it is an important distinction. But the privacy-at-all cost people on here may want to suppress your post because it doesn't agree with their freaking out.
Umm, no. It is not a myth that hackers target MS because it is the most target rich environment. That is just common sense. There are all kinds of hacks out for the iPhone. Why? Because they are so popular it makes sense for hackers to go after them. Taking one piece of data and making a generalization to something unrelated is a bit stupid.
Quite frankly, you are just using poor science as well. Instead of asking why, you are jumping to the conclusion that fits your bias. So the Wii has a bigger marketshare...why are the hackers not going after Wii's? Maybe because their internet capabilities are less. Maybe because people play their Wii's a lot less that people play the 360. Maybe it is because the hardware is less sophisticated or interesting. When you stop asking why and just buy in to the BS Slashdot group think...you are no longer a nerd. Just a part of the herd not caring about reality.
There is a way to DoS pretty much anything connected to a network. How does that have anything to do with MS? And as far as the Gamerscore goes, it isn't some sort of sensitive information...just another case of hackers finding creative ways to use an otherwise benign mechanism. Your bias is preventing you from actually thinking. This is a game console. Not a mission critical military device.
