Hmm, so Stephenson is Family Guy compared to Pratchett being Southpark?
I agree with most your post except the end. WoW may serve the most, but not because it is cheap and not fulfilling. It is simply the most fun and the has the most people that you probably know playing it. It isn't for everyone, that's fine...that is what will keep the niche games afloat. But at the point, it is really hard to see anything bringing WoW down. Every time they release a new expansion they just blow me away with how much they really get it. If WoW could stand still, something might be able to beat it. But it keeps moving and improving and becoming more polished. No one will be able to match that polish in a beat or at start. Warhammer did a hell of a job but after some time you realize that it is basically TF2 with levels, and I can play that without a monthly subscription whenever I want.
I don't think it is a problem to deviate every now and then. People down the road won't get to experience the game...it really isn't a big deal. What is a problem is that people who DO play the game can't experience the game. It takes too long to get a group together and then go somewhere and level. By the time you get there, use lose someone or it breaks up and you are out hours of time just trying to find a nice group so you can level. Not end game content, level. It is more a game of frustration than fun. And not having instances is horrible. People just time/bot/camp all the things that drop the good items and sell them for ridiculous prices. And I am someone who loves the FF series. I think their cut scenes for major quests was the one thing they did right that added to the immersion. WoW pretty much does everything else better. FF is more for the hardcore, I enjoy leveling down when I die types.
I really never understood why people objected to other people having fun with this game. They aren't going have as much fun making awful noises on a real instrument. I am sure you do some things I would find to be a waste of time, but I'm not going to judge you for it. And why in the world would a law suit convince people to play real instruments. They are totally unrelated.
Youth IS a renewable resource. If I want more youth I just get together with a girl and make one. As long as the planet is inhabitable by use, youth will last forever (and probably be doing crap that we don't approve of).
Or up to the user not to save 150 times then complain about having to delete them. In any case, you seem to not play games. On a PC, it is easier since you can just go in to folders, highlight a bunch of files, and drag them to the trash. But this isn't a PC, it is a game console. The interface to your save games is designed by the game companies (this is how it is on the PC too, just you have more options on how to deal with the files). You don't want the user accidentally hitting the wrong button and deleting the game they have been working on for 60 hours. So you have to add in confirmation screens to prevent the user from doing it. So, really, I wouldn't say it is the game companies fault...I'd say it is the users fault for having some sort of saving addiction.
You may "win" the mod point war since every post that loves Nintendo gets modded up, but I think the point he was trying to make is that it isn't surprising or special that Nintendo consumes less power since it is running on last gen hardware with an innovative controller. It's like saying your $500 work PC draws less power than your $3000 gaming rig. Yeah, it's cheaper, it's still useful, but it isn't surprising since the hardware is inferior.
And standard Nintendo disclaimer: just because I say it has inferior hardware doesn't meant that it can't be just as fun if not more fun than the other consoles. It just has less processing and graphical power.
And they have a right to charge money for downloadable content that can't be sold with the game. And if you don't like it, don't buy it. You have some strange anger issues if you care about this so much. Games aren't food. No one is going to die if they don't buy the latest game. You can still go to the used game store and buy games and your friend can still give you theirs once they are done.
No, we aren't pretending that the item is not abundant. We are saying that people should be compensated for their work and they have a right to set the price on that work. If it is too much, we are welcome not to take advantage of their work. I understand that we all have a different gauge on what is right or wrong. But if there was no law against copyright infringement, then anything that costs more than a few hundred bucks wouldn't be worth the effort.
You are wrong. You do have to pay for the game, that is what the law says. For a lot of people, that is enough to make them go out and buy the game. They want to be law abiding citizens. Others know that they most likely won't get in trouble, so they take it without paying. That bothers the companies so they try to come up with ways to stop it (e.g. DRM, subscriptions, etc).
So don't call BS. If it were legal to duplicate games then no one would pay for them. The system we have now of piracy/DRM/subscription isn't going to go away. Right now the system is able to sustain itself despite piracy. That doesn't mean they aren't going to sit around and not try to come up with ways of preventing it though.
I agree somewhat with the sentiment but in this case the person has to take some responsibility. It's like everyone telling you that Michael Jackson is a pedophile, yet you still let him baby sit your children over a 2 year period. Yeah, Michael Jackson is disgusting, but you still need to own up for your own stupidity.
Umm, not that I support religion bashing...but after reading the parent...what the heck are you talking about? What does Christians telling married people to have sex have to do with anything? The word Christian is almost meaningless in the sense that your beliefs vary widely between churches
It is true that you have to throw a lot of logic and skepticism out the window to just believe. That's fine, it is your choice. But don't make it seem like you guys are so discriminated against. Particularly when you don't allow homosexuals the right to marry. I know it is in the Bible. But it also says in the bible that if you marry a woman who isn't a virgin that you can stone her to death. It is this pick and choose what you believe stuff that is really annoying to people on the outside. I'll fight for your right to believe what you want to believe. But when you use your religion to creates laws to oppress others...I am not going to feel too sorry for your vast majority in American when people criticize you.
Just encourage them not to buy it. Same effect but you are morally on the higher ground. Pirating the game DOES NOT do more than boycotting. It only encourages the company to come up with different and new DRM that is even more annoying to legitimate consumers like me.
I would probably be considered a "computer geek" as I have a Masters in Comp Sci. So I can identify with a lot of the opinions expressed on Slashdot. I just don't on this particular topic.
Of course people on here are telling you what is right or wrong. They say what the companies are doing is wrong and so they feel that it is right to pirate. I honestly don't care if people pirate or not, I object to people encouraging others to do so and get modded up for their (always morally wrong) justifications for them.
It's fine to object to DRM. It is fine to complain about copyright and IP. But people's work need to be protected. I can identify with that since I write software. I have a right to be compensated for the work I do. If other people simply take that work from me without compensation, then I lose the incentive to work at all. I like gaming...I don't want developers to quit what they love because they can't make a living. I want to continue to play awesome games. Pirates interfere with this...and the more they do it, the more stupid DRM will be created, which will make more people pirate, etc. But the initial wrong starts with the pirate. If he/she didn't exist, we wouldn't have this problem. Reacting to a wrong with a wrong is bad, and the companies should find the least painful way to protect themselves, but you have to understand the problem all starts with the pirate.
PC gaming is done at a desk with a keyboard and mouse. Console gaming is done on your couch with a game pad. I don't want a KB + mouse on my couch just like I really wouldn't want a gamepad on my computer. Certain games are better suited for each different set up.
Beyond that, for most games that I can get on a PC and a console, I get it for the PC. I have a gaming PC that is more powerful than a console. I prefer the ease of getting user created mods for these games on the PC. You just don't have the flexibility on the console. Some games like Civ just are too complex for a console and they have to dumb it down if they move it over (again, KB + mouse on a console defeats the whole reason I am playing on the console).
Personally, I like both types and hope neither of them die. There are a lot of advantages to consoles, but since you were asking about PCs I just listed why I like them.
If they want to drive second hand shops out of business and still make money off their product, they should just sell it for $60 or whatever initially. Once that initial wave of people buy the game, drop it to $40. Once the people who like that price point start to dwindle, drop it to 20 or 15. Why buy some used crap when you can buy it new. As long as you are getting more back than production and distribution costs, it is still profit. More so than you would get from the used stores.
And if you are really evil, once you have driven all the used shops out of business, then jack up the prices again and don't lower them until it becomes a problem again.
How about you just don't play the game at all? I think the lesson learned by game companies is that they read posts like this and realize a lit of people are useless twats that like to get things for free instead of paying for the work that was done.
I am sorry, the slippery slope argument is stupid. If bonus maps are acceptable, then it shouldn't be punished. If only having the final boss is unacceptable, then you don't buy it. It is as simple as that.
I'm tired of this boring old Slashdot group think that thinks it is ok to justify piracy. Either buy the game or don't. And if you are going to pirate, just shut up about it already. No one needs to know how you are breaking the law.
It's a game. In reality, it should take like 5 people to pilot a small ship and hundreds for the big ships. But since it isn't reality, we don't have to worry about it. You could just write the lore to say that your brain is a computer and you are uploading how to learn to fly all the different ships. They do it just so that it takes longer to train anything...not because it fits in to lore. All that stuff can be written to say whatever you want.
Umm...other people are free to make their own games, so it isn't a monopoly in any traditional way you would define the term. Let's pretend like your term is different, but still accurate. You go on and call it socialism. What??? I know in this election cycle it is a fad to call everything socialism, but let's get back to reality. They make games. It costs lots of money to make games. They want to make more money than they spend to make games. There is no monopoly or socialism in there. The only thing different is that this item can be replicated for free. So the first person could buy it and then just give it all away. That's great, but no one person is going to pony up 5 million dollars for a game. Basically, in any dumb ass system you would come up with, big games wouldn't exist. This is where the highly moderated slashdot posts on this point all fail.
Maybe because none of them were relevant or even close to being a viable contender? Face it...none of the candidates held a candle to the interest generated by Obama. You might like some nut like Bob Barr...but the rest of the country could care less. If a third party candidate would emerege that had Obama's charisma, you could stand a chance. But the third party choices this year were very poor to say the least.
