Um, why? We all know PCs are Windows...so you are just restating what everyone knows. Do you not like MS's monopolistic practices? Well, then you wouldn't be supporting the 360. Besides, all three of those companies have done nasty things in their past. One of the disadvantage of PC gaming is that it has to support so many different configurations. You want companies to support your favorite OS but there is often no profit in that. Consoles will not change this. If you want more cross-platform gaming then you are going to have to face the reality that your favorite OS is going to have to gain a lot of marketshare in the home user arena. This is harsh, but that isn't going to happen in the near future so just face reality.
Ugh. Different genres fit different systems better. There are games that are more enjoyable on a console and ones that are better on a PC (FPS's are the obvious example). I don't turn my PC off, but I turn my consoles off. Oh dear lord, there is an extra step...it must be inferior! Yeah, you install games on your computer...and you know what? It runs faster since it isn't being read off of a disc. After that, I just double click on an icon rather than having to trade out discs every time I want to play a new game. Is that a big deal? Does is make consoles worse? Of course not. Gaming on both is good. I don't know if you are bitter about not being able to afford a nice gaming rig, but your points to justify it are based on hyperbole rather than fact.
There are advantages and disadvantages on either side. You are being a bit intellectually disingenuous about the disadvantages of PCs though by over-stating them a bit (e.g. I have free AV software and don't have game compatibility problems). It is kind of odd to me that this even is a big deal considering consoles are just PCs with specific hardware that can only run locked-in vendor software. Which is selling better...the Wii or PCs? (dumb question, but just as dumb as your point about the Wii) I guess I don't see why either side is so defensive. You guys are all like prom girls pissed off at each other for wearing the same dress. Both markets can exist and be successful. Both have their strong points. Just shut up and have fun.
Heh, so in your words you are a "unrepentant software thief" yet when you pirate something good, you "felt shamed for stealing such a great game". If you had no qualms with what you were doing, you would never feel shame. On the other side, there is obviously some protection on the game or you could have played whenever you wanted to. So basically, the same could have happened to you with any software as long as the cracked version did not give you some functionality that you really wanted.
In any case, your friends can let you play WoW for free for a month with a friend invite, many games have demos, and you can always find a game reviewer you trust and base your purchases off that. Any magical "piracy made me buy this game" is just a justification for doing something you obviously know is unethical. I am not trying to change your ways...I honestly don't care. I just don't think that you buying sins because you pirated it really proves his point. You just couldn't pirate the full contents of the game.
I bought Sins and sort of regret it...it really isn't that fun. That is just personal preference though, I have a co-worker that really is in to it. But liking or disliking the game isn't my point. Right now Sins is trying to appeal to the Slashdotter for sales. This is all basically a marketing ploy that seems to be fairly effective. A lot of people hate all the restrictions and so consumers want to reward this company for doing what they believe is right.
But, like everything, I think there is a happy middle ground for both the companies and the consumers. The over-reactions I read on this site to DRM blow me away sometime. Can't get through a Steam article without someone saying they won't buy a game through the service no matter how good the game. I understand the objections but since I actually buy and play these games, I find my experience to be positive and it makes the other people look like paranoid nerds in their basement wearing tin foil hats.
In any case, if you want to miss out on great games because of some principle that will change nothing, feel free. But you have to realize both the futility of it and the fact your concerns are exaggerated. It reminds me of the old "slippery slope" argument. The NRA says "if we let any laws pass on guns, they will take all our guns away!!!". Where there are certainly a place for some sane gun laws. Same here, DRM when executed in a sane matter, is not a problem and is a way companies can protect themselves.
I can't help but chuckle at your reply. These systems are more complex than "processing power". There are so many things that go in to the overall output of a system that a bottleneck in a bus or memory or gpu can negate any difference in processing speed. Maybe as time goes on, people can find ways to get more out of the Cell and bypass other bottlenecks, but I don't think the difference will be very significant. It is just stupid fanboy arguments at this point since people like me will end up buying all three eventually.
Now the next statement you make is just dumb. You can't say processing power and graphics quality is so important and then say it doesn't matter for the Wii because they are somehow special and always outsell everything. It was just last gen when Nintendo was battling to stay out of third. They had the same sort of games, but didn't compete as well. They really lucked out with this strategy this round by basically upgrading the gamecube, giving it a new controller, and making it much cheaper than their competitors. Nintendo has done their share of stupid and evil things as well. I really don't get this sort of attitude about consoles though. It is fine to have your favorite, but realize that competition is good and hope for all of them to do well.
It must be pretty decent when I am seeing more positive posts than negative posts on Slashdot of all places. I wonder if it will ever show better games performance than XP...I guess until then I can wait. Hard to upgrade when I have been happy with XP for awhile. They need a new XP service pack that messes up performance and they would probably see Vista get more use:)
Do you not read this site at all? If anything, the "Slashdot mindset" is to be fanatical about the Wii. Every article you can comment on about on a different console has to have people saying how their Wii is better and how their Grandma is able to walk again because of their Wii. Besides, Nintendo said it wasn't looking to compete in the same space as MS and Sony. So it is interesting to note how well a previous generation machine is doing against next gen. No one is missing the Wii and the DS and I think you are either trolling or extremely clueless to say that. We all know about them...but we can talk about other platforms sometimes too.
You are full of crap. And this is coming from someone with plenty of skepticism and lack of belief. If a person believes in an all powerful entity, that says nothing about whether or not they are qualified to be a scientist. Some of the greatest scientific minds I know believe very deeply in religions that I could never come close to believing in. Do I look down on them for their beliefs? Of course not, I respect them for the incredible work they do and their ability to separate what is a believe to what is scientific.
These guys are not writing scientific papers on why we should believe what they believe. They are smart enough to know that they can't prove it...that is why it is called a BELIEF. By writing off these people, you come off as a jerk and a fool. This seems like some sort of ego trip for you. That you are a better scientist than others just because other people have beliefs that you are too scientific to waste your time on.
I guarantee you this, you will contribute essentially nothing to this world scientifically compared to so many scientists out there that have the belief "flaw". You, sir, may be a scientist, but your lack of respect to other people makes you a crappy human being.
Because after playing with a M + KB, you feel like you are handicapped when you are without it. Besides, the future will see more PCification of consoles that will result in people playing with KB + M and destroying the people who use controllers.
What does living on the greatest country on earth have to do with anything? If you don't think inhaling smoke has a negative impact on people, then you are an idiot, plain and simple. I think people should be allowed to smoke...that's fine, just not around others who don't. I think there should be bars that allow it, and those that don't, so people have a choice. I am all for people doing whatever they want as long as it doesn't harm others...but smoking does harm others. Just because you can't see a negative effect immediately doesn't mean you aren't negatively impacting their health. I shake my head at people like you. Hell, I am even being nice. Smokers, even if they don't smoke around others, are still a burden on society with all of their health issues.
Ugh...reading stuff like this makes me really want there to be Slashdot cards that can be revoked.
1) I would rather install a game on a hard drive than play it off the disc. There is less "spinny sound" and games load faster when they are on the hard disk. Having things plays off a DVD/CD is a disadvantage, not a good thing.
2) Many games allow you to play in windowed modes to avoid this. This isn't an issue for me anymore since I have a dual core system. Alt-tab works fine and it works quickly.
3)If you are playing an intensive game, maybe you should disable a lot of the bs that you have running in the background. I don't have issues with this...again, dual core...but you are comparing a single purpose box to a multi-purpose box. If you don't stop some of the multi-purpose, you get what you deserver.
4) Usually consoles, when they first come out, have better graphics. It hasn't happened this gen. My computer is capable of delivering better visuals on larger screens than any of the consoles. Your complaints are probably due to having a weak/old graphics card.
Are you sure you are playing on XP? Never had any windows bunched up in the corner. Maybe you don't update your system? I have been gaming on XP for years and never once saw that happen.
I built my computer about a year ago and don't have issues. I play everything on the highest resolution with all the bells and whistles and don't feel a need to upgrade.
In short, I think your complaints are due to some ancient or made up experience. XP gaming is great...I am sure Mac gaming is fine, but it really has a limited selection and for a GAMER, that is a pretty big deal.
It won't happen. The super delegates will go with the popular vote. Too many people would quit the Democratic party or politics in general if they actually gave the election to Hillary. Also, everything I have seen says that Obama is more electable than Clinton. Something would have to change for your scenario to come true.
He isn't a troll, but he can never win. He is too far from the center of the country that he is unelectable. Let all the people in America get to better know him...he mainly appeals to Libertarians (and therefor a lot of Slashdotters). No one knew Obama, but his message struck a chord with many voters. You may not like it, but more people would know RP if they actually agreed with what he was saying.
Unfortunately, "center" for American happens to be on the conservative side of the spectrum (I say unfortunately just because I think we are far too puritanical...obviously just my opinion). Ralph is too far left for the majority of people. It is easy for him to gain some popularity since he has no chance in hell of winning he can say whatever he wants. Saying the full truth and how you feel, sadly, will not get you elected in this country. He has been a spoiler in the past and so even less people voted for him last time. Quite frankly, while I thought he was cool when I was younger, I just view him as an annoying distraction now. Independents can be good when they bring important issues to the table and force the other candidates to address those issues. At this point, no one cares about Nader enough for him to make any difference in issues. If he is serious about being a candidate, he should align himself with a party and more centrists views. Of course, it is too late for that. He is just in it for his ego at this point. If he cares about the country, maybe he should be more like Al Gore and align himself with a cause (I know he has in the past, but haven't heard him do anything for a long time since) and make a change that way.
What a load of crap. I have been running both Linux and Windows for years and Windows is just much easier to use for general computing (I should be specific and say XP, Vista is horrible). When you make posts like you do you are doing a disservice to the Linux community. You are sticking your fingers in your ears and saying "lalalala" instead of being honest. Driver support is getting better but is still a major issue. The menus, particularly in flavors like SuSE, are done in such a overly segregated way. In general, the only place a normal user is going to need to go is "Program Files"...dear lord is that difficult! Heck, most apps are just going to stick a shortcut on your screen...that's about as easy as it gets. And now that so many flavors of Linux come out of the box with iptables and SELinux installed, it just makes things more confusing. Hell, I have had to REMOVE SELinux one time because it had some sort of conflict with my hardware.....what the hell does it care about the hardware I am running? They are actually taking steps backward.
While SuSE is complete crap, I have to say Ubuntu is moving in the right direction. These are people who are honest about the issues that face Linux for less experienced users. But your perception is clearly skewed by Slashdot group think and I find your personal experience to be so far off from reality that it is laughable. For general users, Windows XP or Macs are just the way to go. If you don't believe that is true, just take a look at the market share. But hey, go ahead and say Linux should stay the course.
What practical use is art? Music? Heck, what is so practical about being practical? We all go to work and do "practical" things that in the grand scale are completely meaningless. Life is all about doing things you enjoy and spreading that with the people around you. This guy happens to enjoy something different than you. I think it is rather pathetic how people on here judge how others spend their time.
1) I didn't say it was better. 2) I said they should have put up a transcript.
They are not changing all of the content on the site. It has been only been on a few articles. Most the people on here don't even care about the game and are just complaining for the sake of complaining. If they added a transcript, it would have been the best of both worlds. You guys act as if graphics need to be removed because it is ruining the site.
Slashdot is a news site about technology for nerds. It is sad to see when they slightly stray from the norm, everyone freaks out. Yeah, it is a good idea to have a text transcript. But I thought this was a site full of people who like the cutting edge...the early adopters...the intelligent. But oh no! Streaming video is presented in front of you and this site becomes a bunch of old curmudgeon, get off my lawn types. I can't see this stuff at work either, but if I am truly interested, I will go watch it at home. It's a games article after all...your next meeting won't rely on the fact that you watched these videos. Just wish people would lighten up on here instead of threatening to move to Canada when something changes slightly.
Let's see, 10 Gb Ethernet came out about 5 years ago. It started out only being able to do about 2 Gb/s with tweaks to PCI-X. PCI-X, at best, I have only seen capable of doing around 6Gb/s with a NIC. PCI-e x8 does much better and you can get very close to ~10 Gb/s. Theoretically, 8x can do 16 Gb/s...and there is a 16 lane version as well. Current standards that are being developed are for 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s. 40 isn't too bad since backplanes can already do that speed, of course, if you have multiple ports you would have to be doing blocking. I'd still say that was a few years off from any real products and then a few years of it sucking before it gets good.
Quite frankly, 2015 is a joke. I see a lot of these people in high places make these incredibly wild predictions. I am not sure if they are just off in their own little land or if they make aggressive predictions to try to drive the industry. So maybe they can put out some strange switch that could go this fast by that time but nothing that would be practical. 100G isn't even out, or at least nothing I can touch. I'd say it would be at LEAST 2020 before any networking equipment will be capable of this, much less used.
I am really guessing all of you people posting negatively got fooled by the article despite the giant foot and the fact that it doesn't even make sense. We have funny mods here, so I don't know why people can't relax and have a sense of humor about an article here or there. It is easy to filter these out. And of all things you felt the need to post. Go make your own site where pretentious jerks can look down on other sites and squash anything humorous before it makes someone smile.
Funny how whenever the candidate people want to win drops out they blame it on the media coverage. If Edwards did better in the polls, inspired more people, won primaries, then there would be more of a focus on him. With the exception of one state, Edwards placed third. This is the fault of his campaign, not the media. The media just follows whoever is most popular. As much as people don't want to believe it, the people elect the candidate and the media follows whoever has that momentum. Fundamentally, they are a business and they want to have as many people as possible watching their show...therefor it makes sense that the most popular person is the most newsworthy and gets seen the most.
Despite some of your other comments, I think you have one hell of a point. We have laws against sexual predators. Unfortunately this is a different type of predator and she gets off the hook. The message is kind of: "it isn't ok to try to have sex with a minor, but to try to get them to kill themselves is fine". Really, we all know this is horrible wrong, but we can't really do anything about it. I would hope this woman's name and picture along with what she did is published everywhere she moves for the rest of her life. Really, what a sick person.
Then maybe you should try replying to that thread instead of making your own? Most of the insults are jokes derived from movies and are not meant to be serious. You may take offense to them, but they are funny to most people. Your post was fairly pointless and lacked any context. You have to understand that even if you are right, there are some things that just aren't going to go over well. But despite the fact that this site is dedicated to worshiping Macs, Nintendo, and Libertarians, if you actually post something reasonable against them and back it up you stand a decent chance of getting modded up. Your post may have contained facts, but you didn't reply to the thread that offended you. Not was it really needed since people aren't serious and no one really cares about Celine Dion or celebrities in general on this site.

I'm organic. You think I am going to trust some crystal to know the difference between Thanksgiving dinner and my family jewels?
