If you are going to actually have this discussion, try to do it honestly. To the end user, the chance of having a system and all its peripherals "just work" is going to be much better in Windows than in Linux because companies do a better job of supplying drivers for Windows than Linux. If your scanner and printer don't work, that is probably because they are dinosaurs or the company that made them went out of business and stopped making drivers. In that case, you are SOL on any system.
I use Linux and Windows every day. I prefer using Windows for my general office environment and gaming. I prefer Linux for doing testing and programming. An OS is just a tool to perform a job. Being so polarized on way or another is stupid and counter-productive. If you want Linux to really catch on, you have to quit lying to yourself and realize that even Ubuntu is going to be a foreign environment compared to Windows and that it isn't as simple to use as Windows to a typical end-user (particularly since most people learn to use a computer on Windows). XP does work better than Linux for general computer use. That, of course, is an opinion...but I make it unbiased since I have no real negative feelings towards MS or Linux (and I use a lot of different distros...SuSE, Ubuntu, Red Hat, etc.). Given the work I do (cutting edge network testing), Linux crashes constantly and installing a new distro/kernel is always a pain. Generally, the problem is SELinux interfering with the install or blocking network access. iptables is another fun thing you need to know about if you want to get things running properly. I have never had a problem installing Windows. So, I still say it has a ways to go. And the people who are in denial and are arrogant do nothing to help their cause.
I did my job as a Slashdotter and didn't RTFA...but what you say doesn't make any sense. If you are using a worm or virus to fix a problem, then the worm should be exploiting the vulnerability that it is fixing. The idea is that the script kiddies are already using the vulnerability and this virus/worm will use it too except patch it up instead of doing something malicious. So if they use the same "delivery mechanism", they are too late. The other part is making sure their worm doesn't do harm to the networks. In that case, they are trying to do something to slow and eventually stop its spreading. That isn't something that someone with malicious intent would want, thus they wouldn't use it.
People who actually have their system secure don't have anything to worry about...so I am not sure why slashdotters are freaking out so much. If something does get through and patches your machine, then you are more secure rather than less. I understand the concerns that whatever they create has unintended consequences and ends up doing harm (that reason alone is probably enough to not do it)...but the rest of it is either people being paranoid or just anti-MS bias.
They don't just 'loose' the records because they don't want them running around in the wild. Plus, they aren't doing their students any good because the RIAA could capture them as they are bounding around freely. Oh, did you mean lose? In this case, that would be destroying evidence and that is generally frowned upon.
Who are you to tell people how to spend their free time? Just insert your favorite pass time in there and lose that for a few months. Yeah, you can live without it, but you can still miss it and you can still care. I don't really watch anything on TV anymore, but I am not so arrogant as to say others shouldn't.
I'd rather just wait and see what the game is like before judging it based on what he is saying. Sure, some people are more credible than others, and I have no doubt I will buy the game...but getting all ramped up over hype is a guaranteed way to get disappointed even if the game is great.
I'd say neither statement is entirely accurate but I would say the Times one has more truth in it than yours. There are more hardcore gamers now than ever, it is just that casual gamers are growing at a much faster rate...thus hardcore gamers are a smaller part of the overall audience.
And I find people who put down genres of games more immature than adolescents. You don't have to be "testosterone-soaked" to enjoy an FPS. In fact, some of the best games I have played recently are Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 (and I am 30). I don't look down on any genre others play...I am happy for it because the more people playing games means the less they will be misunderstood. Maybe you should drop the prejudices and look at us all as gamers rather than trying to separate yourself from them. Trust me, just because you like different games doesn't make your special or better.
Only stupid people don't know that great graphics don't equal great game play. I am still waiting for people like you to admit that a great game can be enhanced by great graphics. There are plenty of great games on other consoles that have graphics that blow away what the Wii is capable of. I am happy I have a choice and the Wii isn't the only selection. I am glad that they offer DIFFERENT things that allow people to choose what they like best. I am really sick of the attitude of the people on this site that don't get that there are a lot of us who can afford multiple consoles. I don't know what is broken in people's brains where they become such mindless fanboys. Then again, I know people who would still vote for Bush, so obviously everyone isn't ruled by logic on every single subject.
If you can demonstrate it, please do so. I know you can't because I have played the game and many others. I have a reasonable understanding of computers considering I have a Masters in CS...so prove it to me, please.
The game doesn't offer FPS-like controls like WoW. You can accelerate, decelerate, orbit an object, and click on modules so they are active or inactive (like weapons, shields, etc.). That is an extremely small amount of communication between the client and server compared to a clickfest like WoW. When I played on the server they broke a record at the time...around 30k and it suffered from various problems due to the volume. The problem is that a lot of people are social...maybe not here...but people want to be around other people. So parts of their solar system are going to have more people than others. So the popular places become incredibly laggy since they can't split that part of the system off on to other nodes. Thus lag and gate queues. Large battles are a joke and generally the winner is the side that gets control of their ships first. CCP has been caught employing corrupt people in the past and that has given the advantage to the largest alliance. I can go on and on and this isn't even starting in on the GUI.
There is ONE thing that I liked that Eve did. That was have a leveling system based on real time. You could log off and your guy was still training away at something. A nice way to remove a grind. Of course, the way of making money so you could buy your ships...missions, complexes, mining (oh god no) were even more boring grinds than leveling up in other games.
So demonstrate away how technically amazing Eve is when you get 100 people in one area you can barely function. If Eve is innovation, give me less innovation.
Meh, if you actually played the game you would know it can't handle 45k people well at all. The game is extremely simple from a client/server perspective...toggle shield on off, toggle guns on off...that's about it. The UI is miserable. If Eve is the model for the MMO of tomorrow...I won't be playing. WoW doesn't have the same capacity, but it is more complex and has less issues. I think I'd go for a model that could have 10 millions subscribers compared to one that can't even come close to handling 100k.
How is he strong on security? We have no border control and we let our ports get controlled by another country. How is attacking a country unrelated to terrorism and 9/11 doing anything other than creating more terrorism and problems? He has put our nation in deep debt which will damage our countries for years if not decades to come, and yet you would still vote for him. Holy crap, wake up.
I want a leader who can change their mind when they figure out they are doing something wrong and the vast majority of people are screaming at you that you are wrong. We elect people to execute our wills, not stand by principles that are clearly gigantic mistakes. What we needed in office were people who wanted to solve the problem, rather than line the pockets of their friends and settle old vendettas. These people are so extremely corrupt, yet you would vote for them again! Seriously, how much does an administration have to screw things up for you?
Wow...sound! And YouTube! That's incredible...I mean, that never works out of the box with Windows. (sarcasm) The only reason that is interesting is that in the past it has been a pain to get drivers to work for Linux. It isn't the year of Linux desktop...it wasn't in the past, and it won't be in the near term future. I don't know why fluff like this gets modded up. I think the mods think "I like Linux, this guy likes Linux...mod up!!".
*shrug* Still doesn't make it right. You could still be where you are if you didn't do those things. It is just another justification after the fact. I am not innocent of this either...when I was younger I did it as well. But I still realize that what I did was wrong and don't try to justify it because I have a Masters in comp sci.
Considering you can play PS games on your PS2, I don't know why you would have it plugged in. Using your criteria, I have played more games and gotten the most use out of my PS2. That doesn't prove it is a better console, just that it has more games that I like.
I like this post a lot. I think everyone should incorporate Croc bashing in to their jokes and analogies. They have to be the most repulsive thing on the planet.
Compared to Fox News, yes, CNN is a lot closer to real news. I have thought about this a bit. I watch both news programs often and the difference between the two is that CNN at least tries to be journalists. They try to present both sides of a debate and if there is a slant towards being liberal, it is slight. Fox News, on the other hand, doesn't even try to have journalistic integrity. They say they are "fair and balanced"...and by that they mean that they think CNN is liberal and to balance that out they have to be as extremely conservative as possible. They care more about the entertainment than the news. The stuff they present is there to polarize people. The are putting a larger and larger rift between conservatives and liberals when there actually is a middle ground (it just happens to be left of the far far right they represent). Quite frankly, I view people like O'Reily as pure evil. They distort truth and polarize people and are really screwing up the nation. And they do this all so they can make a lot of money. Sick.
Or you tried harder with your first kid. Or the second kid is genetically less proficient at things tested by school. One instance proves nothing. I am sure it wouldn't be hard to find someone who would claim the opposite.
I think that is a load of crap. Do you really think you learn from Mario that if you do something over and over again you will improve? That exists in everything. Mario is entertaining. You do it over and over again because it is fun and you want to see the ending. Real life, often times, is not fun. It takes much longer to achieve anything.
I just think your point doesn't make sense. In all games you "learn" that the more time you spend at something, you get rewarded. JRPGs have better story elements and can confront you with decisions and emotions that can help you grow. MMORPGs can present challenges in communication and teamwork which are not present in single player games. Basically, you can make up stuff that you are learning for any genre...but it all breaks down to the fact that these games are for entertainment, not learning. You will learn more in the real world interacting with people. Your bias on game genre is flawed. Only games that are designed (well) to be educational offer any real learning.
You have left me only one choice. The only power I have is as a consumer that votes with my wallet. Because of this, I will be spending as much money on video games as possible this year. Tell my friends I will miss them.
Umm, no, you are not shooting "beings". You are still shooting "pixelated nothings". If you are unable to tell the difference from reality and something on a screen, then you shouldn't be allowed near a tv, movie, or computer.
You have a point. But when you compare it too how many Second Life articles we get...and compare the number of people who subscribe to both games...there is certainly not enough WoW articles on this site!
If you are going to actually have this discussion, try to do it honestly. Right..which leaves the worst of us to go to Best Buy. So, I guess the article should be tagged shegotwhatshepaidfor.

And who elects the government? We do! Therefore, it is our faults. Damn I hate us.
...fix our own computers.

Maybe you are right. Or maybe "she" was born a man. It would explain how someone on slashdot has a girl friend.
