How in the world was the Fallout trailer excellent? It was a camera panning out to show a devestated city. It could have been a trailer for any generic post-apocalyptic game. Really, I understand being a huge fan of a game but that probably ranks as one of the most boring trailers ever created.

Sounds nice but you don't really know what you are talking about. The PSP actually outsold the DS until the DS Lite came out. The DS Lite took off and sold like hot cakes. Quite frankly neither handheld has any killer apps to me. Handhelds seem to be better for the younger crowd in the sense that they have more time to play them. When I go somewhere, I am either driving or engaging in a conversation with someone. Kids are generally passengers and handhelds are a good way to keep them quiet for the trip. So really, cheaper and longer battery life is the way to go. No doubt that I would have loved the DS or the PSP as a kid...but right now when I have time to play games I am at my home where I can play console or PC games. I have so many great games to catch up with on those that there is really no need for a handheld.

Probably because Mac users are fairly uneducated about that sort of thing. Obviously, not saying this about you or any slashdotters. But I know many people (myself included) put our less educated users on Macs (i.e. moms/grandmas) because we don't have to worry about them as much when they open every dumb attachment they get of a dancing kitten.

I guess I don't understand who you are dealing with that download third party utilities to turn off things in Windows. Systems are so fast these days that your general Mac user doesn't need to disable anything. Eye candy isn't going to slow down surfing the web and sending e-mail. The only thing people do on Windows machines is if they don't install it themselves, they reformat and install from scrach to get rid of the third party crap that Dell/HP/whoever sticks on there.

The majority of people with Macs don't really care about performance. They aren't gamers, they aren't building clusters with them...so give the compute cycles to the OS eye candy. Obvious exceptions are people (like my Father) who use it primarily for video editing and actually care about performance above and beyond basic desktop apps.

I think you may need to get away from Slashdot a bit. You seem to have this Mac is a superior OS mentality that is encouraged here. Quite frankly, all OS's have their strong points and weak points. They are just tools to get things done...not a way of life.

  10. I have no faith in CCP on World of Darkness MMOG In Active Production · · Score: 1

Hopefully they will ditch the single shard idea which doesn't even work for Eve when you try to have large scale battles. Eve has a lot of good concepts hidden behind a UI designed by people with mental retardation ranging from slight to severe. I just can't see them making a good "traditional" MMORPG. They are going to have to get a boat load of artists that can do animation, learn how to design a UI, adopt a different server model. If I were a fan of this IP, CCP would be the last people I would working on it. I'd rather see SOE do it...that's how little faith I have in CCP to be able to execute this game well. Besides, they have a history of letting their employees cheat in their games and then not firing them. At best, this game will achieve niche status like Eve. Good concepts, a lot of potential, but ultimately will fall short of doing anything great because they lack the talant and the ability to make a game without being swayed by their "hardcore" playing buddies.

Starcraft is one of the most loved and still played RTSs of all time. It is a valid question to see if they can actually improve the most balanced 3 faction RTS ever seen. But Starcraft is 10 years old now and it deserves and update and a continuation of its excellent single player story. I know it may be hard to understand, but "topping" something doesn't have to mean more profit or more units sold. It can also mean just making a better game.

  19. Re:Fixing the Economy on Blizard Sues Virtual Gold Seller · · Score: 1

I have thought and discussed a lot about this topic. I agree that legalization of gold selling is not the way to go. You get a "game" like Second Life which is more of a giant advertising space than anything that resembles a game.

To me, the gold sellers in WoW aren't really that big of a deal as they don't really have a huge effect on how the game is played. Compare this to FFXI, where gold sellers make it impossible to try to get any of the good drops and cause disgustingly massive amount of inflation.

But let me go back for a second...you say that the company needs to go after both the buyer and the seller. Really, this is unrealistic. It is hard to actually prove that someone bought the gold. Sure, you can see who a seller is by how much gold is coming from them and how it is distributed. But say a gold seller just gives a person gold for fun...that person would be banned. They have no proof that the person actually bought gold, they just know that they got gold from a certain character. It is better to go after the seller because it is easier to track a large volume of transaction to a single account.

Ok, to go back to the difference between WoW and FFXI. The services these gold selling companies have change the complexion of the game. In FFXI, it made the game unenjoyable to me. In WoW, other than the spam messages, you really don't even notice. There is a bit of inflation...but generally you benefit from that as much as anyone else. Blizzard did it right with their Raiding system. You just can't buy the best stuff. The only mistake they made was making epic flying mounts so expensive. Other than that, you need to actually play the game to get the top tier stuff.

As far as capping progress per hour...that is just dumb. Some people enjoy to level as fast as they can. There is nothing wrong with that. You just have to learn that in an MMORPG you will not be the best player on there unless you give up your life. Really, what would you cap it at...your rate? These are games designed to be played by many people, not just you. Gold selling should be attacked, absolutely. But forcing people in to playing a certain style is going too far. (Though Eve gives you something that caps the actual speed of how fast you 'level' so you might like that)

Except for the fact that they have admitted in the past that a dev helped them cheat...and is still with the company. Your ref analogy fails. It is like Chelsea vs Liverpool. In a game between these two teams, the ref makes many questionable calls that give Chelsea the advantage allowing them to win the game. People cry foul. Then they find out that Chelsea was paying the ref to give them calls. The ref admits this but for some reason is still able to ref. Now, even if the ref doesn't take bribes ever again, they will still be seen as tainted. But, quite frankly, the ref will probably still take bribes and CCP is most likely still showing favortism. CCP made this problem for themselves. They have done a piss poor job of addressing the issue and the game isn't worth paying for because of it.

A company that has nothing to hide doesn't have to agressively moderate and ban its users. The fact is that there is a large amount of favortism in the game that CCP shows certain individuals and groups. So unless you are in that group, there is no point playing the game. Eve is a fine game to play for a few months. But after you have "beat" the PvE portion and get involved in the end game PvP...the cards are stacked against you. I don't mind being new and having to fight my way to the top...that kind of stacking is expected. But to force me to fight people who have instant access to the devs and have benefited from dev abuse in the past is stupid. And this isn't rumor, these are facts from the last scandal which they have admitted to. They disclose as little as possible so I can't even imagine how much other crap they are doing/hiding.
