It's supposed to be a player driven game. Fixing things in order for things to happen the way you want them (by giving players you like advantages/tips/whatever) is a horrible way to run a game. What will I do? I already quit during the last scandal. I'd quit again if I could!
Right. Because living on welfare is this fantastic lifestyle that everyone envies. You are right that "Paying people to sit on their behinds and make babies who become gang banging drug dealers is not a good solution". Fortunately, that is not what welfare is. Yeah, some people abuse the system. In some case not having welfare might be beneficial. But the benefits (like, if you actually care about people other than yourself) are still there for a lot of people who need help.
Yes, isn't it ironic? About ironic as noticing that if you shoot homeless people that the number of homeless people goes down. If you kick the people out, they are going to move to places where they can get assistance. You are just shifting the problem instead of dealing with it.
It just amazes me to see what heartless assholes we have all become. Chritians only care about abortions and gay marriage. Heaven forbid you actually think about the least among us. That you work to help the poor rather than ignore them. No, it is much easier to hate people with different viewpoints than actually work to make the world a better place.
I quit over the last major scandal. It was more of a last straw. The game has to be one of the most boring ones out there. After you get over the fun of blowing things up in space and getting a bigger ship with better weapons and blowing up more things in space...you realize that the UI is poor and that is where most of the complexity in Eve exists. The player base are a bunch of elitists with small -something- complexes because they always like to belittle other MMORPGs (like WoW). They aren't any more intelligent, they just like to think they are as to justify spending so much time in that game instead of another. I liked their skill training system a lot. But they remove one grind and replaced it with another (generating ISK). And even PvP is a grind as it is mostly sitting at gates and blowing up ships that don't have a chance to defend themselves.
On the plus side, the servers can't handle all the players on there so thinning out the population with scandals every few months is probaly good for the game:)
That sounds nice...but there isn't really much you can do with the services they provide. You can buy gold, which gives you access to a few things, but nothing close to the best gear in the game. You can get a leveling service...but everybody is 70 anyways so it isn't that big of deal. The spam messages were irritating though and I am glad they have taken steps to shut them up.
I disagree. CNN has really been ticking me off with all of its reporting on "racism". They are very consistantly taking a more right wing stance on this. Now Fox News is just a joke. Any human being is going to have some bias...but CNN journalism at least makes an effort to be professional and give you all the facts. Fox News omits many facts and even sometimes flat out misreports. For example, when one member of congress was found IMing children sexually explicit messages, they put up on the screen his name with the (D) when he was actually a Republican. It's little things like that that they constantly do that make that station pure fantasy. If you can't see the degree of bias and slant is worse on there than other stations...you just aren't paying attention.
Precisely. Your talking about 'gamers'. A lot of people on slashdot aren't gamers at all, nevermind casual gamers. And on the flipside, a lot of gamers have never heard of slashdot. The two groups aren't one in the same.
This may be surprising to you, but a lot of people who read games.slashdot.org are gamers. Many of the people who are super enthusiastic about the Wii are gamers too. It isn't hard to figure out who is a gamer on here by their comments. I was just stating that I see things differently among the gamers I know...having a different perspective than the typical Slashdot responses actually brings more to the discussion then saying for the thousandth time, "omg, my grandma plays the Wii and loves it". Too many people come to Slashdot to just reenforce their biases rather than participate in an intelligent debate.
Your reading comprehension sucks. The reason those third party titles didn't come out for the cube is because they sell poorly on those system because Nintendo's first party games suck up most of those people's gaming budget.
Flamebait? Yes. It was obvious that it would be a soft spot for you. Sorry I couldn't resist poking it.
But false? Only in terms of game exclusivity, and that's an entirely artificial difference.
Yes, stupid people making stupid statements is a soft spot for me...how did you guess? In any case, a console is just a computer. This is true of the 360 as it is of the Wii. The only difference is that consoles don't have the problem that PCs have with billions of different OS's, vid cards, etc to support. This makes it easier on the developers since they don't have to support so many different variables. So the Wii is as much a PC as a 360 is.
So, basically, you want to force your opinion on him that he shouldn't have an opinion. The funny thing is, he wasn't telling people what to do. Quite frankly...it seems like you have some problems and should probably seek mental help.
Actually, there was an article on Slashdot awhile back...it talked about this but I am not finding it right now. I'll try to explain the logic though.
1) The Wii appeals to more casual gamers. Casual gamers, by definition, are ones that don't play games as much. They also tend not to buy many games. In fact, a lot of them would be happy just with Wii Sports and not even pick up another titile. On the other hand, PS3 gamers tend to me more "hardcore". They buy multiple games a year. This has nothing to do with wealth...more with the type of gamer.
2) Nintendo makes fantastic games and people know it. That means a lot of the people who buy multiple games will be buying games made by Nintendo instead of third party games. Obviously, fantastic third party games will do well. But lesser quality third party games sell better on non-Nintendo systems because they don't have to compete with Nintendo.
Yes, Sony has first party developers...but none with the reputation of Nintendo. The one closest is Square Enix, but it seems they will be developing a lot more cross-platform games for this gen so you can't really count them anymore.
I hope that explains things a little better. People on here are so afraid of someone saying something negative about the Wii. I just don't get it. The fact is I am saying something positive. That Nintendo makes the best games out there and third party titles have trouble competing. In the long run this may hurt their console sales...but who cares? They are already making profit from the console so even if they sell less consoles they will be still very successful financially (see Gamecube).
Actually, no, I didn't say it as a bad thing. It just seemed logical to me. I like all three systems. Unlike you, I don't have some overwhelming bias that makes me stupid.
The more complicated the AI, the more processing it requires. This isn't a big deal when you are dealing with one AI...but add multiple AIs and it quickly becomes difficult. At a certain point, the Wii is going to have to have simpler AI or less AI in the field at one time or it will have issues (this only matters on cross platform titles). To site an example, the developer of Spore blasted the Wii for this. He felt the lack of power on the Wii handcuffed his ability to make the game the way he wanted.
This isn't really a huge deal...the Wii doesn't need super AI to have fun games. Cross platform titles will have to either dumb down their games for the Wii or not take advantage of the power of the 360 and the PS3. Not really a problem though...most Wii games are going to be exclusive due to the vastly different controller. The game may have the same title, but will be different in many respects.
Ah, so much to respond to. Yes, Nintendo makes the best games for Nintendo consoles. This has always been true and part of the reason why third parties do so poorly on their systems. Just look at the Gamecube.
Yes, third parties see the Wii as selling well so they get a bunch of people who don't know crap about making games on the Wii and put them on the project. At least initially, the third party games are going to be horrible since they ignored the Wii before and don't have experience making games with the controller. Yeah, they have the same history as I do, but funny how greed make corporations make the same mistakes over and over again.
Consoles != handhelds. It is a stupid analogy. You can't fit a current consoles power in the palm of your hand. In order to play games on a handheld, they have to be last gen (or last last gen) because you can't make a portable as powerful as current gen yet. I think it will have a shorter lifecycle because the limitations of the console just become more pronounced as time goes on (compared to the 360 and PS3). It isn't an insult or something, it is just logical.
I am talking about gamers. A lot of Slashdotters are gamers. I don't know about you, but I don't distinguish between the two. You may be talking about casual gamers, but that isn't what all Slashdotters are.
Seems pretty redundant to buy two boxes for that.
That statement is pure flambait and false to boot. Grow up.
I think the Wii will probably slow down. The problem with the Wii isn't actually with the Wii. It is with the third party developers that are now targeting it. They are going to make games that are worthless compared to what Nintendo puts out. This will make people buy less third party Wii games (and indeed, since more Wii owners are casual, they will buy less games per console). Third party developers will run back to Sony since they don't have to compete with Nintendo and the people who own a PS3 are going to buy more games per console.
Also, the Wii will probably have to have a shorted lifecycle than the PS3. It just doesn't have the power for AI or graphics. While those elements don't have anything to do with fun...a lot of developers do want to have more capability and the Wii is going to be limited to more casual games. This isn't a criticism of the Wii...I am glad Nintendo viewed next gen as how you control the game and that MS and Sony viewed next gen as power and HD. I just think the Wii is going to lose steam as soon as third party vendors realize they won't sell as many games on the Wii and that they are limited by the older hardware. And this isn't really speculation...this has happened on every Nintendo console (i.e. Third parties peform poorly compared to first party games in sales more than on other platforms)
As a side note, I find it interesting how many people love the Wii on here compared to the gamers I know in real life. A lot of them don't like the Wii because they feel the controller isn't responsive enough. Most don't want one and are happy with just their 360. The PS3 has nothing worth buying it for so they just mainly 360 and PC game. Maybe my friends are in the minority or maybe posts that don't claim Wii as the second coming of christ just don't get modded up!
I don't really understand this argument. Starcraft, the things you like and the ones you dislike, is the actual portion of the game. Whether the limit was artificial, technical, or a strategic decision is irrelevant. You may not like it...you may blame it for why you suck...but it is and always has been part of the game. It is like complaining that Castling in Chess gives another player an advantage and since you don't understand it very well or can't use if effectively it should be removed from the game.
I get it, you don't like the clickiness. You want it to be more about strategy than skill in using the interface. It seems like a lot of that will be improved...you are complaining about a very old game. Blizzard has got a lot more experience in UIs now. But Starcraft is still a very enjoyable game. Just because you are afraid of carpal tunnel doesn't meant they should change it for you. This is the main problem with people today. Instead of actually trying to improve at something they complain that it should be changed to suit them better. Well, guess what? Any game played at a high competitive level becomes more work than fun. You enjoy your victories, but you have to work hard to get to that point. I just think you are the type who rather complain than work.
And any time there is an AC who trolls about Steam, there are a bunch of you that feel the need to reply to a comment that no one will even read. But at least you get mod points for it;)
(and I, of course, agree that Steam works fine and I have not had a single problem with it)
The narrator did not hint that it would impede movement. He just talked about how it was one of the new elements that was added. After the debris slid down the ramp it disappeared...it doesn't look like the debris is persistent.
After the nuclear strike, there are indeed craters. But just like the debris they disappear after a few seconds and did not appear to effect where the units were able to walk. Indeed, it would be stupid if it had that functionality because people could nuke chokepoints. Unlike nuking a base where you scrambled to try to find out where the nuke was going to launch and either kill the ghost or counter the nuke, you would have little chance to counter a nuke focused at a choke point. In other words, it gives the terrans too much of an advantage and I would be shocked if it was anything more than a temporary cosmetic effect.
Well, if you think that is bad, one of the cut scenes in the first Starcraft has a cigar floating in space after a marine was killed. That isn't bad...but the cigar is floating in space and is still lit and smoking! So either they don't understand how cigars work...or, these are really awesome future space cigars. Maybe they provide nutrients and other chemicals to keep the marine in tip top shape. I like to pretend it is the latter.
You have a problem common to many people. Understand that this is a game...it doesn't have to make sense. What is more important is how each race is balanced against one another and that it is fun. You can name ANY game and nitpick in how it isn't real. Starcraft has stayed as the most popular RTS of all time. Why drastically change a working forumla? What you do is take that formula and improve and expand on it. From what I see, it looks like they are doing the right thing with this game for anyone who was a fan of the original series (and that's a lot of people).
And I mean that to people on general. With the over-reaction we are getting to shock jocks on the radio...to the morons who say things in games...the easiest thing to do is just let it go. You aren't going to change them. Most games give you mechanisms to ignore the most obnoxious. Otherwise...just relax and try to see the humor. Yeah, to some people the guild name "A Naga Stole My Bicycle" is offensive. But it is meant in humor and should be interpreted as such. People are too sensitive about words lately. In general, most people aren't racist...these words have become slang to mean something else. I think people should watch what they say more and others shouldn't be so sensitive. But it isn't a problem that is going to go away. So either learn to deal with it or log off.
Uh, no. The thing is, you won't even get positive support on Slashdot of all places for this. People hate cheaters more than they hate copy protection. As far as used Xbox's go, it is buyer beware...that has nothing to do with MS. I also think the 360 might be making a small profit at this point. I don't think MS is worried about the prospect of having more units sold even if it is at a loss. It makes them a more attractive target for developers. More games means more appeal means more sales means more money for MS's money vault.
It's supposed to be a player driven game. Fixing things in order for things to happen the way you want them (by giving players you like advantages/tips/whatever) is a horrible way to run a game. What will I do? I already quit during the last scandal. I'd quit again if I could!

Starcraft II is announced and it stops all news from coming to games.slashdot.org for days!
He wanted to make enemies. Posting his poorly thought out article here is making his wish come true.
Yeah, but that game wasn't developed by Blizzard. This one is. So, your kids don't know what they are talking about.
