Because gaming is still considered anti-social (even if it is an MMORPG, you aren't out with "real" people) and doing it a lot is considered bad in our society. Playing soccer or piano is considered a good thing because you are doing something that is considered constructive (i.e. soccer gets you in good shape and playing the piano allows you to make beautiful music). Gaming is only appealing to the person who is doing it and yields no long term perceivable benefit. I know studies show it gives you better hand eye coordination and other positive effects. But you can't really show that off to others. Most people don't care that you have a level 70 Warlock in 100% epics and have a perfect 5v5 arena record or can can get 10 head shots in a row with an AWP in CS. But if you have a sexy body from soccer or can play a complicated Mozart concerto, they will be impressed.

So bad things are considered addictions while good things are considered normal.

I always find the "parents don't understand X" thing to be fairly weak. If there is something your kid is taking an interest in, you better take an interest in it too to see what is going on. Are parents really so stupid that they can't understand video games? Does procreation suddenly turn on some "not with it" gene?

What is so hard to understand? Some games have content that parents may not find suitable for their children. So, don't let them play those games. Even if they do get their hands on them at some degenerate friend's house...it isn't going to warp them forever. At some point innocence is lost and you learn how to cope with that.

It's time to stop making excuses for stupid people. Some children are born evil no matter what you do. Most other messed up youth are due to bad parenting. We have to stop making excuses for stupid parents. Video games don't kill people...bad parenting does.

I think calling them "Craptop" says it all. Not for Windows, but for your level of maturity. You can get work done on all OS's. It really depends on what work you want to get done and what tools/apps you prefer to use. At work, I get more done on various flavors of Linux. But that is because I am testing specific stuff that needs to run on Linux. If I am writing a paper or doing e-mail, I use Windows because that is what a majority of our 9000 employees use and it makes it easier to communicate. At home, I run Windows as well because I enjoy gaming and I can build a great machine much more cheaply than a Mac. We stick my mom on a Mac because that way she can do the least damage to her system. I personally don't do a/v editing and don't really see the attraction of an overpriced PC. If I did do those sort of things, I would probably feel different since I know a lot of people (including my dad) love it for those sort of applications.

But use what makes sense. This overwhelming bias for an OS is stupid.

  10. Re:Not built for games on Claims of Apple Games Just PR Fluff? · · Score: 1

I don't think that was his point. The point is that if I want to build a gaming machine...I can build a very very respectable one for $2000. To get a gaming machine that good with a Mac, you would have to spend at least and extra 1k if not more. Why do that when there are more games for the PC? If you enjoy gaming as a hobby...the Mac platform just isn't as attractive. And just having a few more games isn't going to change that.

Macs are great for general purpose computing. They just can't compete in price and ubiquity of PCs for gaming.

And if they would just get rid of the region crap, you wouldn't be frustrated at all. Really, I am sure you aren't the person Sony was trying to target...it is the people who want to do bad things.

But all this is moot to you if the PS3 doesn't have region encoding. And I am not sure if this is true now, but here is a past /. article: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/03/23/ 0021243&from=rss. So it looks like you wouldn't have a problem with the PS3 if that is still true!

A friend of mine is probably one of the best equipped warriors in the game (pre and post BC). He was replacing purples with the BC stuff. So yeah, if you spent a lot of time raiding, it felt like a waste. I did raid a lot but got sick of it and quit....came back with BC so getting stuff to catch me up was great. I could see how that would be a drawback to people though.

And while the rep grinds are kinda blah, they were really a lot easier than the rep grinds in the original WoW. They gave better gear for people who played more casually (5 man heroics and Arena PvP) and still had a reasonable about of end game content for the raiders. The only thing I truly hated was grinding gold to get the elite flying mount.
