First of all let me say that as a Democrat I'm ashamed that the people using this information for intimidation purposes share my desire to change Presidents. This amounts to nothing more than bully tactics that I might expect from other Political Parties, but not from mine. Freedom of expression and political affiliation is what we are built on and hsould never be threatened.

Having said that I don't understand this on two fronts ..

    1. What possible benefit could the list could be to somebody? I mean it's not like these are potential swing votes. To me it would only give the Republicans political fodder for demonizing us democrats.

    2. Why is simply posting it illegal? From the article ...
The subpoena seeks subscriber information, and contacts and billing records for the Indy Media site. It says the information is needed to investigate possible violations of the federal criminal code barring efforts to intimidate, threaten or coerce voters.
Seems to me this goes along the lines of writing a phone book. Sure it's a select phone book with more detailed information (email, hotel, etc) but it's still public information (except possibly the hotel). To me it's the people who abuse the information that would intimidate, threaten or coerce voters.

It was all about what wasn't said and they left it up to our intelect to figure it out. That kept the movie going for me. I also felt like she didn't dwell on any one scene too much. Just when the scene might get old she cut to a new one and let us figure out what was in between. She didn't hold your hand through the entire film and lay it out for you. To some this is boring, to me it is masterful.

Amen ... One only has to look at Usual Suspects to see how succesful a quality low budget (6 million) film can really be on DVD. The format has allowed for sleeper hits like this one to truely thrive. Now with the advent and success of services like netflix the possiblities are truely being realized. The bottleneck was shifted from the movie theaters than can only show 1-10 movies, to the video rental stores that have between 100-500 movies, to the online rental services that currently have over 25,000 movies. I mean talk about an opportunity for independent film makers.

To me this smacks of the "Activation" BS that some PC software makers are taking up these days. Personally it makes me want to get a cracked copy of the software just so I don't have to deal with the hassel that is their DRM. I mean their point is to make it so difficult to pirate software than it is no longer worth it and people simply purchase it. To me it seems all this crap is simply doing the reverse and entrenching piraters even more.

Don't even get me started on the black market that their price fixing has created. There are economic reasons for piracy and simple economic solutions that do not involve enforcement.

And now we come to the basic problem with the attitude behind Open Source development. If we ever want to get open source out of the geek world we need to be able to get this idea out of our heads. A simple installation is important. Someone should not need years of experience to install an OS smoothly. And any computer novice should be able to upgrade their software with the click of the mouse (maybe 2). I'm not saying we need to dumb it down, just put in a little bit more attention to ease of use/install/upgrade.

Another problem with general anesthesias is that the entire body shuts down, including the immune system. So your body doesn't have a chance to start healing itself until you wake up. If the body could be staving off infection and mending cuts during the surgery the patient would have a much shorter recovery time with a higher success rate. I'm not sure if hibernation would help with this problem, but it would be interesting to see.
