Yes... BUT what would happen IF the studios stopped selling DVDs and only sold HD-DVD/Blue-Rays discs? Is it any wonder why DVDs are SO cheap these days compared to past years? In many cases its only a little cheaper to buy than rent. The studios are trying to exhaust all the market left in DVD now, then the ONLY way to get a NEW movie will be to pay the $40 again with new media with THEIR terms... Some people will say no... Some people will go BACK to watching the movie in the theatres (because it would be cheaper by comparison)... Either way, they make money. And the best thing, for them, is that they have the hand on the throttle where they can control exactly how fast the conversion to HD goes based on maximizing THEIR profit...

Ofcourse it will take a while...

    1. Buy a legal copy of OSX
    2. Install and run it on a your own "Non-Apple" HW

What happens when Apple issues patches and updates to OSX AND all of ther other programs (iLife, Safari, etc..)? How are you going to "legally" get those. Apple distributes (online) non-major updates all the time to REGISTERED Mac owners. You might not get these updates. You would have to go back and buy 10.4.x+1 in the store to get those updates. If you hack so as to fool Apple into think they are distributing updates to a real MAC, then THAT may be less than legal. Apple sorta has a right to only distribute to the real MAC people if they want to...

This new HD-DVD or Blue-Ray (whichever one wins who cares...) will not take off until normal people are able to break the DRM like they did for DVD. For many many people (not just geeks on the cutting edge) they got DVD players once they knew that there was s/w available that allowed you to rip DVDs. It pretty convenient to rip to a laptop or make your own backups...

Why would ANYONE who has a DVD collection already and is used to ripping DVDs for ther personal and FAIR use want to go with a new format that won't let you rip?

Backup storage is the only reason to get one... And guess what people will be putting on those new HD-whatevers? Yep, multiple ripped DVDs! Maybe like 5 or 6 movies on one disk. THAT is keul, but actually going the Best Buy and BUYING something in this format? Uh.... Maybe for a few really good FX movies, but in general, NO.

    1) Because they are Cool and you can show off... This fades FAST... Fads are not really a good business model.

    2) Because you have a high-pressure or high-travel related job. In other words, you NEED all those tiny portable productivity features to stay employed. For this case, a PDA is more of shackle than a gadget. After a while, most people would love to be able to shred the PDA and go back to a normal job. So in this case, you really are not going to buy PDAs for your kids are you?

IPods on the other hand are ONLY bought because people wish to enjoy life with them. You can use at work, at home, wherever. They are pointed to a TOTALLY different and much much wider market than PDAs.

When I see someone with a PDA I have to wonder what kind of reason they would have to HAVE to use that tiny device for business.... Does that PDA simplify their life or does it introduce far too much complexity and expecatations or superiors?

When I see someone with an MP3 player, I see someone that has found a way to mix work with fun. Its a pretty good compromise.

The reason is that you have a much better chance at being successful at something you LIKE doing. The majority of people out there HATE their jobs. Many of them got into their fields because it was the POPULAR degree/training thing at one time (but times do change). Back in the 80's it the hot degree was EE. LOTS and LOTS of people got EE degrees because all the experts thought there were unlimited jobs in EE.
