  1. Re:Who knows what will happen on Grand Challenges For The Next 20 Years · · Score: 1

Clearly human work is necessary to apply technology (and even advance technology). ...and it's not like they're hurting anyone by publishing a list of goals for the next while, but in the next 15 years so much can happen... there could be monumental new discoveries that make the things on the list seem unimportant. I didn't say that it was a bad list, unrealistic, or useles..., just that it's hard enough making predictions for a year into the future, let alone 15. Plenty can (and will) change between now and then.

  2. Re:Just ONE request... on Grand Challenges For The Next 20 Years · · Score: 2, Interesting

True.. that's one thing they left off their list. Battery life hasn't increased at the rate as I'd like it to. Id would be a beautiful thing if I only had to charge my PDA once/month, or my laptop could go a week without charging

  3. Who knows what will happen on Grand Challenges For The Next 20 Years · · Score: 4, Insightful

They're setting these as goals for the next 15 years... but who really knows what's going to happen 15 years from now? If Moore's law holds (and we have no reason to think it won't), we'll have almost 2^10 times the computing power we do today. That's a huge number!! Setting these goals is a nice idea..., but who knows what the world has in store.

  4. Physics? on More On PS3 and Xbox 2 · · Score: 4, Interesting

In the article they mention that a big thing they'll be able to do with the improved processing power is more realistic physics. ??? Does anyone else find that a bit weird? I remember like 20 years ago I played a game with monkeys on buildings throwing bananas at each other. That thing had gravity you could adjust :) The screenshot does look amazing though... it's going to be really interesting to see where this technology (games) goes not only in the next 18 months, but 5-10 years down the road. Maybe we'll have holodecks after all :)

  5. Re:In the same boat on DirectX9 - For More Than Just Gamers? · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the issues (especially if you're planning on deploying the app) is that your customers will need graphics cards. I know it sounds obvious, but a company I worked for about 2 years ago did the same thing. Most of their customer machines didn't have current graphics cards, and they were unwilling to buy them (which is strange, seeing as the software was selling for like $10,000). In the end, we ended up just giving away an nvidia card with every license. It worked, but that's an issue you should probably be aware of. We weren't, and it caught us off guard.

  6. Clever idea on Interview With Sundog of Radio Free Zion · · Score: 2, Interesting

The guy does have a point - communities are important in MM online games. I'm not sure music is the right way to bring everyone together (he identified the issue of people having different music tastes...). I know I'm quite picky about my music and I'd rather listen to things I enjoy. ...but having some kind of server-specific radio station talking about recent server events, or organizing current events would be quite cool.

  7. Great idea on P2P Meets PSTN, With Bellster · · Score: 2, Interesting

This really sounds like it could be useful. Phone companies are such a horrible monopoly... this could be a good start in getting rid of them while transitioning off their service. It might be somewhat inconvenient though... if you want to use your phone line, but someone else ties it up for awhile. I wonder if they have a solution to that problem

  8. Good things... on The Naked Corporation · · Score: 3, Interesting

Only good things can come from corporate transparency. Just like 'open source is better since more eyes can look for errors', having companies share more information with their shareholders (and other people who have interest/financial stake in the company), there are more eyes to go over the decisions that the board makes. People on the board will be more accountable, but again, that's a good thing.

  9. Re:About Time? on Google To Release AdWords API · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are still issues though - the API is only for advertisers (not for publishers). ...it's always bothered me how they don't provide an ssl version of the javascript code. If you want to use their ads on an ssl'd page, your users get a popup message telling them that not all elements are secured.

  10. Could be interesting on Robert Zemeckis to Direct Beowulf Movie · · Score: 1

I remember having to read beowulf during my grade 11 english class. I don't remember a thing about it :) Gotta love high school english classes.. I never had any great teachers and they always seemed to be a joke. The movie should be good though... a good director could really make it exciting to watch (and I quite enjoyed back to the future) :)

Really... I'm surprised. It would be nice if slashdot published some apache log analysis.. :) Is that available somewhere and I just don't know about it?

  12. Re:.88%? on Firefox Continues Gains against IE · · Score: 1

Yeah, no kidding. The sites you choose make a HUGE difference when looking at stats like that. I'm sure slashdot has like 80% firefox usage... maybe higher. At the same time, sites like msn probably have a 99% IE usage. It's realy difficult to get an accurate picture of what everyone's using just by monitoring a couple sites.

I'm sure we've all felt like we're missing something since suprnova went down ;) I'm really excited to try this out and see what it's like. I love how every time people do things to limit rights, the open source community is there making sure everything is freely available

  16. A step in the right direction... on Consumer Electronics Companies Plan Common DRM Standard · · Score: 4, Insightful

As much as I hate DRM, this was really a necessary move. With everybody using different DRM technologies, even consumers who wanted to follow the law really had no choice. Having incompatible file formats wasn't a solution. Consolidation like this was a necessary first step for protected digitas music.

Yeah, the 2-way interactivity is great. As one of the previous posters mentioned, if you wait for version 2, it'll support bi-directional communication. Until then, we can't really expect anything huge

  18. It should be great... on VoIP Regulation, SIP Insurrection · · Score: 4, Insightful

The whole VoIP technology has the ability to revolutionize communications. We just need to make sure that the industry is kept open enough, so everyone has a chance to innovate. Open source and open protocols are an excellent way to help do that. If the government steps in and starts regulating everything like they did with POTS, then we'll end up with a few huge monopolies that offer horrible service and horrible prices again.
