... and all the others are unavailable via pricewatch (wrong versions (re: latest) listed or not at all).
But that doesn't matter. What does matter is that prices don't matter that much, it's what already comes with the OS. Also, the retail prices listed for Windows are usually much, much higher than what you can normally buy them for if you just look, compared to versions of Linux which usually sell right around retail price.
He does make money on his paycheck, just not as much as regularly hourly wage employees for Pizza Hut. At the very least he makes minimum wage (always, required by law). Say he starts out at $3.00. Yes, that's below minimium wage, but he does earn tips. Now if he earns up to or over minimum wage, Pizza Hut doesn't have to pay anything. But if he doesn't earn at least minimum wage with tips, Pizza Hut has to cover the rest to bring it up to minimium wage.
and hire enough people to do the job
You don't understand how Pizza Hut works (or any other fast-food place, though some would argue that Pizza Hut isn't fast food). If they get less business, they have to cut hours. There are only so many people that can be "cut" in slow times. Store managers are required to meet a certain hours/sales ratio at any cost (even if they have to be the only one there, I've seen this only one time). This requirement comes from at least the regional supervisor, though probably higher.
Most McDonald's have the following setup (in the US AFAIK, yes I used to work for McDonald's): 2 servers, 1 for serving the terminals, 1 for the private-eye system (to control the average of 23 cameras in a store). The terminals (the "ordering" terminals) all use MS-DOS embedded.
The main reason for this is: the terminals connect to server 1 to retrieve information, mostly screen layout, what server(s) to send information to (orders taken, etc.). MS-DOS is used because the power can be cut off/on with minimal startup/shutdown times. The terminal server also has access to reboot the terminals themselves. The terminals are completely dependant on the terminal server to run correctly.
Some of the terminals aren't completely dumb terminals (some have hard drives), and of course there are specialized terminals. In a dual-booth (front drive thru and back drive thru as we call it) there are 2 terminals in each booth. In front drive thru there is a monitor that shows orders. The terminals can change functions, too: can be a cashier, order-taker, or both at once.
So back to the topic: are they switching the server, terminals, or both? The server I can see, but the terminals would be a bit harder.
Are they even switching the in-store system? I doubt it (as parent poster said). The current system works and is pretty stable. So... my whole post is moot. Good day.
Hardware and driver compatibility. Nvidia chipset-based motherboards and ATi-based video cards do not play nice together. Not Linux's fault, but Nvidia's and ATi's. I got my motherboard and video card playing nice together (sort of), but the framerate was poor and as a result unplayable (compared to Windows, think 15-20 fps versus 30-35 fps).
The other problem is the lack of wide-spread adoption of Linux by game developers/companies. Yes, I know Unreal Tournament [200x] as well as many other games run on Linux. My main concern is MMOs. As is, most MMO companies only develop for Windows. I've dabbled with Wine to play games, but it isn't compatible with the latest advances. MMOs are (usually) constantly being updated.
And yes, I've tried many times on many occasions. After hours of trying to get Linux working the way I wanted, I got frustrated, and decided to dump it for Windows. This is one other thing that keeps others from switching to Linux: ease-of-use. If I had more time to spare, I'm sure I could get it work how I want, but time is precious to most. 5 years ago when I had no committments (wife, baby, full-time job), and wasting away 24 hours a day in front of the glowing orb of computation, I could've done it, would've done it. As is, I can't.
The difference, though I am not an expert by any means, between 8x and 16x dvd+r (or 32x and 48x cdrs) is the guaranteed labeled quality. You are guaranteed by the company who makes the medium that it is capable of being burned and read at said speed.
That doesn't mean it can't be written at higher than said guaranteed rate; on the contrary, I have cdrs that are guaranteed to write/read up to 48x, but I write all of them at 52x.
Ok, bad joke, had to plug my own website. I've never dabbled with XML itself, but I use XHTML 1.1 Transitional on my website. It *was* XHTML 1.1 Transitional compliant until I decided to change it where I have a <div> tag inside a <span> tag (a big no no apparently). Working on changing it...
And generally you are right, though I'd like to put out an instance where that isn't the case. With WordPress it has 2 very nice plugins available: one that uses google as a redirect, and the other creates a md5 hash of the website url. So, for example, this link will take you to google, which takes you to my website, which then redirects you to slashdot.
Or so some companies would have you believe. About 6 years ago, when broadband was starting to sprout up, we still had dial-up. We used Bellsouth dial-up a lot, after all it was "unlimited access".One day Bellsouth notified us and said we were abusing the unlimited access. We also had netzero (free then), and the irony was that Netzero had better connection speeds than Bellsouth.
Why not? If A quantum computer is powerful enough to create something like very strong encryption, then I'm sure one could break (since it did create it).
Yes, cable broadband here costs $57 for 4 mbps, though it isn't a guaranteed speed on a dedicated line (like a T1). I wonder if the wireless guarantees bandwidth availability?
You can glance down but I wouldn't recommend it. Each time you glance you're putting strain on your neck. It also slows you down because you have to hunt for the key (even that split-second is crucial). With practice, one can be reading a book, typing from it, and not watching the screen or keyboard with almost no typos. Eventually you'll get up to speed somewhere around 100+ wpm with 95% efficiency.
This comes in handy for those jobs that require nearly any typing, and especially on/. for those of us who like to comment a lot. Even the fastest typists look at the keyboard every now and then because, let's face it, some of the keys are used very rarely. I myself have to glance down every now and then because I switch from a regular keyboard at work to my ergonomic natural keyboard at home. Posture also affects accuracy and speed.
On topic, I rarely use the caps lock, and I haven't accidentially hit it in years. Caps doesn't need to be moved and there's no real reason to remove it. It is one of those rare keys that nearly never get used, but that doesn't mean it never gets used. Some word processors make it unnecessary to type at all in caps because there is a built-in function to uppercase a selection. With CSS, text can be made uppercase, capitalized (first letter uppercased), or lowercased (even).
I've been installing SuSE since 8.2 via FTP. I was very pleased with FTP, but like all other distros, I could not get my brand-spankin' new Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard (nVidia chipset) working correctly with my ATi Radeon 9500. It'll work, sure, but the OpenGL component is extremly slow. I want to play games on Linux, real ones like UT2k4, not the petty ones includes with most distros.
haha, so true. I use to use slutorama.com since it was free, java streaming porno (no sound though) to test bandwidth. A few years ago it was converted to some ad website, and they no longer showed streaming porn.
My friend, I have seen a free country, a country where two right-winged political parties do not dominate the political spectrum and national tickets, where peoples rights are preserved and social classes have been all but eliminated, a country where soft-money and corporate sponsorships are not permitted to "buy" elections. The U.S. is no longer a free country and it's high time something is done about it.
What is this free country you speak of?
Really, not trying to sound funny, are you talking about what the U.S. used to be? And... where are you getting these:
A free country does not allow the government to pass laws that provide for the silent imprisonment and execution of its citizens, citizens who haven't even been convicted of a crime. A free country does not allow its private sector and capitalists to dictate domestic and foreign policy in their favor and to the disadvantage of the majority. A free country does not encourage the widening of gaps between social classes by promoting the elite and trampling and stifling the poor. A free country does not make its will dominate another sovereign country, regardless of their political system and certainly does not invade it without clear justification. A free country allows its citizens to hold its leaders accountable for their actions, actions that have caused the deaths of hundreds of your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters and countless civilians overseas.
... definitions of a free country? Same thing as I mentioned before? Ok. Just wanted to clarify.
As far as the political party duo-domination goes, I remember reading (some time ago) that in the early 20th century, most parties disappeared except Democratic and Republician. Unfortunately, I can't find where this is stated, so if someone could assist me I would appreciate it.
And according to this, Democratic and Republican used to be one and the same.
Post the url of the website on
With overhead, it converts to about 2.5 megabytes/sec.
In Soviet Russia Bewulf clusters imagine YOU.
Your analogy goes no further than those two sentences. How can you benchmark a PC, much less a car, if it is in an inoperable mode?
That isn't a haiku. 1 too many syllables in the last part. Try this:
Many years have passed
developers, go elsewhere
Please die, BeOS.

And taking 10 minutes, I fixed the validation issues. I took the W3Schools XHTML quiz test, and scored an 85% (17 of out 20).
No, this is technically incorrect :P

Blocking child pornography is considered good by most, but is this the best step? What happens next, they block hardcore porn?

Was it immorally wrong for the university to do this? Maybe. But as a serious basis for a lawsuit? I am not a lawyer, but I don' think so.
Nah, not up to snuff. Come back when you've got the etch-a-sketch working with the rest of it. </sarcasm>
