Go to whirlpool.net.au and read about the various isp's trailing unbundled adsl services, in 6 to 8 months time it should be available to all exchanges with the isp's dslams installed. Which brings us to the second point
and soon I'll be paying more to take it up to 8M - the *maximum* I can achieve at any price.
This is slightly misleading, you can get more then 8M on adsl 2+, You just have to live in a suburb that is served by an upgraded exchange (most inner city suburbs, and quite a few outer in the capital cities). If you are renting or even buying a house it isn't that uncommon to put a conditional in the paperwork making it dependent on high speed net access being available.
Most of the problem stems from telstras monolply and the bs they put the other isps though to do the most simple things
I did the same thing, finished uni, with an IT (software engineering) degree and realized that i just couldn't take sitting in an office all day. I ended up getting an apprenticeship as a linemen with the local power company.
Eventually ill go back to university and do an power engineering degree and move into command and control before the body gives out or i start getting bored.
In Australia, supermarkets (and places that bide by the supermarkets code of practice, like servos,7-11 ect) for products under $50 must give you the first item which scans at the wrong price (or labeled incorrectly) free (if you know to ask) and subsequent items at the correct price.
In aus 1.5mbit/s adsl1 is the fastest most people in major cities get. Some isps have put in there own dslams (iiNet come to mind) and offer full adsl2+ speeds.
If you are in an older suburb, cable can be your only option (if its there) as rims and pair gain kill any chances of adsl. (admitidly it is getting better slowly)
Note: this is all a generalization from reading whirlpool and looking around my own home town for a rental place that has adsl available.
In Aus we can get an 18+ card that only contains our name and date of birth.
It is a government issued card (one off fee of $10), with all the anti tampering/fakeing features. Anywhere that requires id or proof of age has to take it.
As another northsider, i can confirm they do this. They do this to save the cops a-lot of leg work in the case of trouble.
I know of a few clubs that do the same on the gold coast. With the introduction of the curfews a few places put cameras facing the street, some regular trouble makers were identified after causing trouble down cavil and being easily identified.
Port filtering already happens here,
alot of the "isps" here (Australia) have no control over the network. The company who runs the network tells you nicly to go back to your reseller (who will do jack because you are only one person and it requires the support person to find there supervisor and fill in paperwork).
you can't have ADSL without a phone service

People shouldn't be charged for something they don't control.

I have a friend who likes sending jokes by sms, or mms i don't want to get charged for that,
Sender pays is the only fair way
