"Linux people do what they do because they want to create diversity and challenge established systems." Challenge established systems? You're joking, right? Signing NDAS, relying on the establishment for non-free drivers, shipping non-free firmware, etc. Sounds like Linux distros are playing the establishment game just fine.
OpenBSD is free, free, free, in every sense of the word.
Sure, personal optical media are fine because you control their care. But rental DVDs SUCK! Out of the last 6 movies I've rented from three different stores, a Blockbuster and two locals, only one played all the way through. In how many ever years I've been renting VHS tapes I have not had one unplayable tape. Not one.
Well, until anime gets away from every character looking like a doe-eyed 12 year old it will never be accepted by the masses. There are some really cool things about anime but it being full of artistic cliches is definitely annoying.
Time-shifting, eh? If it's time-shifting can't they just time-shift the message into the past and make the message appear before it was even sent?
FFS, nothing does time-shifting, it's either delay or latency or whatever. Time-shift implies a two-way shift, AFAIK, no one can send content back in time. Whoever started this usage of time-shifting should be arrested by the meme police.
SCADA is cool. I had 2 job leads 2 years ago, one at a local water district, and the other at a network-owned TV station. Unfortunately I didn't get an offer from the water district. I think I would have had much more fun at the water district even though most people would think the TV station would be more fun (I can say it does have some perks). The only thing challenging here is to keep the place running with such a low budget.
You free marketeers are such simpletons. If one has $10,000 invested in Nikon lenses and accessories one is liable to put up with shitty and overpriced NEF capture software rather than switch platforms.
The motivation is to sell their own RAW/NEF software, not to prevent other cameras from using the NEF format. The only thing a public-domain standardized file format would hurt is the company's software sales. And from what I hear their software sucks so bad that this must be the only way they can increase sales.
So you think in the modern film days it would be ok for a company to lock a photographer into using their film developer and only their film developer?
Bands and musicians are pretty clueless. This type of sharing does nothing to affect their profits. Generally only hardcore fans listen to what many times are poorly recorded shows. It's not like they're sharing the latest Wing CD.
I politely blame the user but I can't blame their software, it's part of our core image and it's configured to work with our web apps, which means minimal security. As far as the user goes sometimes I can't even blame them as we do a ton of entertainment industry research here and users are constantly hitting informational sites that depend on spyware for their revenue.
...and I think it was because of malware. As users got more and more frustrated with malware they took out their frustrations on us techs for not being able to prevent their PCs from being infested. The funny thing is I use the same browser as they do and I have no spyware, I guess I'm not visiting the same porn, gambling, warez, gaming sites that they are.
But the tides have changed now that I install Firefox for them. They use IE for accessing our many internal IE-only web apps, and they use Firefox for browsing the Internet. And I'm now the hero again. If I could replace their PCs with Macs they'd be even happier but I work for one of the largest companies in the world and they're in very tight with Microsoft.
Let me count the ways they suck. Double-billed for 6 months, triple-billed for 2 of those. A customer service rep hung up on me when I asked for a supervisor for another matter. Even though I had a flat rate plan I got a different amount on my bill for 6 months in a row until I got one smart CSR who changed my billing date to one 4 days later in the month.
When I moved last time I asked them to keep my phone going at my old place until Feb 1 and to start up new service at my new place on Jan 15. Well, soon as they turned the phone on at my new place they discontinued the service at the old place. I was expecting some important calls at the old place on Feb 13 and 14 and I finally got them to turn the old phone back on on Feb 13. The CSR who finally managed to get it turned on turned down my offer to write a letter to his supervisor: "Don't bother writing to my supervisor. She doesn't like me because I spend too much time fixing people's problems rather then answering 80 calls a day."
Yeah, but you can't be fired for being a whistle blower. There are plenty of things that could be said that are legal, ethical, or not inappropriate that companies could threaten to fire you for.
Have you travelled outside of the USA? To the Netherlands, UK, Australia, or Switzerland (I haven't been to Japan so can't comment there)? It sounds like you haven't. There is way more equity in those nations than ours, and along with that equity comes less social anxiety and less desire to get rich quick by unethical means.
I'm glad mortgages are cheap in your area, they're not in SoCal. Oh, if you mean interest rates they haven't always been under 6% and they won't continue to be there either.
Do you mean those highways that are full of potholes like I40 because there aren't enough Federal funds to fix them?
Do you mean those drugs that are released way too early because the FDA is full of scientists with massive conflict of interest with pharmaceutical companies?
That's about the most naive, braindead, mainstream media-influenced dreck I've ever read.

...of "time shifting", "shift of time", whatever, is getting ridiculous. Nobody can shift time, they can only delay the play back of content.

I was about to mod this whole story down due to cliched and irrelevant usage of "meme".

And how does your player know it's been 30 days if it has no clock?
...but nothing beats Dreamworks, and in general the tech companies still don't beat the movie and TV studios.

Gotcha, excuse my ignorance of the big picture.
...thisbefore allowing their vendors to add more crappy conduits and then taking forever to fix their old root exploitable ones.
Make that niche providers.
There's still plenty of room for nice providers. If I was into street stuff I'd go to your site over Google any day.

I'd mod you up if I had the opportunity. marco@ is brilliant when it comes storage.

It's great fun. Love it.
...makes me very grateful that I use OpenBSD on my FOSS systems.
