Prof. Farnsworth: This is my Universal Translator. It could have been my greatest invention, but it translates everything into an incomprehensible dead language! Cubert: [into the translator's microphone] Hello. Universal Translator: Bonjour! Prof. Farnsworth: See? Utter gibberish!
Heh... I got one of my co-workers who was running several 'on-the-side' businesses while at work, mostly over email - which he was very protective of, as it had the potential to get him into a *lot* of trouble.
I threw together a little VB app which, when launched, displayed an error saying that his Exchange mailbox was locked by another user (said user being the GM of the company). When he was away from his desk, I remotely killed off the outlook.exe process on his machine, and copied over my app as outlook.exe.
When he got back to his desk and noticed Outlook wasn't running, started it, and saw the error - shit, I've never seen someone move so fast;) Good thing he came to me and not the GM though...
"You mean we're going to have to add an 's' to the end of 'http', do you really expect 100 people to change their bookmarks! They've been using those bookmarks all year!"
Insight from other admins very welcome.
Ummm... a HTTP redirect to the new HTTPS URL?:)
Interesting thread. I looked into setting up MythTV a few months ago, but a few problems (me being a MS kiddie and knowing zilch about *nix, and being Australian, where the program guides were something of an issue at the time) foiled my attempts.
My partner and I (yes, a girl!:D) have sinced moved to a new house, and the TV now sits in one of the spare bedrooms. Our antenna has several missing elements, so free-to-air TV is fairly unwatchable... so we download most of the TV we want to watch, and occasionally stream it via the xbox.
End result? We watch a *lot* less TV. And... it's bloody great. We've gone from, say, 4 hours a night of TV - 28 hours a week, over 9 hours(!) of ads - to maybe 8 hours a week, no ads.
Break your TV. Cut off the cord. Move it to another room. Give TV a break... it's phenomonal what you can acheive without it - PetRescue is my example.
Finally, and a little more on-topic:
"timestretch" feature (for changing playback speed but not the pitch so you can watch shows more quickly)
So can you slow it down, for the stoners? Damn cartoons are getting too quick for me....;)
In Outlook Express, the location of the mail is hidden. With absolutely no information on how to find it in the help-files or MS website.
Erm... in Outlook Express, click on Tools, Options, click on the Maintenance tab, and there's a 'Store Folder...' button that will tell you where your OE files live, and allow you to move them to a different location.
Personally, I found the mail files location harder to find in TB!
In cahoots with my partner, who's animal-crazy, we made PetRescue (Australia only).
This site has been overwhelmingly successful in the little-over-3-months of operation so far, and we've since turned it into a non-profit organisation whose goal is to help rehome shelter animals in Australia, and provide education to the public.
Do I get a cent for this? No. But I *do* get a great feeling knowing that I'm personally helping animals find new homes, rather than being put to sleep.
Also, the attraction of your SO saying, "No no, I'll cook dinner/do the dishes/iron, you do some more programming on my website - can I get you another beer?" - yea, that's pretty great:)
Maybe, except there is no porn on the page they would have gone to.
There was when the ads were originally run in Australia. The caseydonovan.com site has been modified to include this new 'warning- porno site' intro page...
What they are doing is abusing the DNS (I presume that's how they did it - might be proxy I guess if they enforce one) to cover up their own mistake. They should be being fully accountable for the cock-up rather than trying to avoid it by abusing their ownership of an ISP.
Hmmmm... maybe things have changed since I was a kid that needed protecting from nasties, but how many kids these days actually read *newspapers* (the URL typo was published only in print media, not online)?
Seems this was all a little over-hyped to me. The vast majority of the kids that followed Aus Idol would have been hitting the australianidol.com.au, which has *always* linked to the correct caseydonovan.com.au site...
Although described in court as a church-going disability pensioner and a diagnosed schizophrenic who cared for his ailing parents, police said his assets included a A$970,000 house and seven other properties in New South Wales, five cars, and an office complex in the British city of Nottingham.
Seems this guy (Nick Marinellis) wasn't real smart though...
Police said they were first alerted in February last year when the Hungarian Consulate had complained that a "Dr Nick Marinellis" had demanded US$2500 ($3604) in connection with an attempted scam.
So he's an idiot, and he still managed to make megabucks...
Yep - dogs are a great security measure (I know, I have three!:)
Rescue animals can be the best decision you ever make - shameless, but community-minded and not-for-profit plug: If you're in Australia, visit www.petrescue.com.au

...I'm surprised people are _that_ dumb.
