  1. You could perhaps claim that in North Ireland, but not Ireland.

The archetypal pencil may have been the stylus, which was a thin metal stick, often made from lead and used for scratching in papyrus, a form of early paper. They were used extensively by the ancient Egyptians and Romans. The word pencil comes from the Latin word pencillus which means "little tail".

Well as someone who only drinks instant I make my coffee with water fresh from the kettle (or ZipBoil at work). I don't know what temperature it comes out at (never measured it), but it is HOT. I've spilt it on myself before resulting in minor scalds (it is hot water after all), but never had anything more than a bit of redness. However, I've never poured a cupful of just-boiled water on myself. If I get something when I'm out and it doesn't get served to me HOT, I send it back. I asked for a HOT drink, not a luke-warm drink. But then again it is all about personal accountability. People would much rather blame someone else for their own actions. If I poured a kettle full of water on my crotch and burnt myself, I'm hardly going to sue the kettle manufacturer for making a product that is able to do such damage. People like her are the reason they put warnings like "don't touch moving blade" on a chainsaw.

You expect hot coffee to be well, hot. It's supposed to be freshly boiled water. Otherwise it is luke warm.

If you pour hot coffee over yourself, you can expect to be burnt.

I'd say you'd have to do a good job to produce something which IS toxic.

Methanol is a by-product of the fermentation of pectin which is found in fruit. If your fermenting a plain sugar-wash, you don't have to worry about it. And the BP of methanol is around 10*C lower than ethanol, so all you have to do is discard the foreshots (and they smell/taste bad anyway).

There are other 'bad' byproducts of fermentation too, but simply put, you through out the beginning and end and keep the middle. It's easy to tell when to make your cuts by just looking at the thermometer on the still head. When you get a bit of experience, just have a smell of the distillate. If it smells bad, chuck it. If it doesn't smell bad, keep it.

As long as your still doesn't have any lead or plastic in it, and your not cutting your product with benzene or anti-freeze, then your product will have a lot less 'bad' stuff in it than the commercial crap that you buy. Which is good - after a big night on the home made stuff you wake up the next day without a hangover, whereas if you were drinking the bought stuff your head feels like it's going to rip itself open.

Two points - grain for brewing has to be malted first, and I doubt that grain for bulk feed would be. Also, if your picking wild hops, you have no idea what your adding to your beer. You don't know what kind of flavour they'll impart and you don't know how bitter they are.
