  1. CmdrTaco, here's an honest suggestion... on Scientists Figure Out How Bees Fly · · Score: 1

In an earlier editorial by CmdrTaco he was lamenting how the comment forums go off-topic for various reasons. And he was looking for suggestions on how to stop or reduce the problem. Okay, here you have a fine example of why the comment forums veer off-topic so frequently. Instead of citing the article on how bees fly and leaving out the unnecessary commentary on ID and evolution, the editors choose to leave these inflamatory statements in the 4 to 5 sentence summary. The fault here lies with /. A good journalist/editor would remove the comments and stick to the topic of "How Bees Fly." But not here. Here we have enough ammunition to spin the comment forums out of control and into another pointless and prolonged debate on ID/evolution. There's only a tiny percentage of comments here actually on the topic of "bee flight." There aren't enough moderator points out there to mod the "off-topic" comments down. Seriously.

I agree completely. I just joined Digg and I'm amazed at how well it is done. It's what Slashdot should be at this point. And that's the problem... Slashdot has not evolved at a steady rate. The simple fact that the Slashcode just now stepped up to CSS and HTML 4 screams a lot. Digg shows much more promise. I predict it won't be long before Slashdot has to play catch-up with Digg just to stay alive.

If DHS does nothing, everyone complains. If they take precautionary measures and do their job, everyone complains. As for the person who said that the Chinese present no threat to us, how quickly you forget the Slashdot story from a couple days ago detailing the cyber attacks originating from the Chinese military.

As for this event, I saw no mention that the book was confiscated or that the student was arrested or even held in custody. Only that he received a visit. Wow. I once got a visit from the cable company to "check my outlets." Doesn't mean that I got all upset with them because they might wonder if I'm stealing cable when I'm not. It's their job and they are doing what they have to do to protect the proper interests. Same thing with DHS. I, for one, am glad to know that they are not taking anything too lightly and also not abusing their powers. And before you jump the gun and say they are and that this all a part of a huge fascist plot by the Bushies, I suggest you provide some evidence from the article. There's none there. It's as simple as DHS following through and checking things out. If, hypothetically, the student was later involved in espionage and cyberterrorism and the press reported that he had requested materials about Zedong, the same people crying out here would be crying out about how DHS didn't do their job and check on the suspicious activity early on.

Like I said... damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Well, crap. I just checked in iMovie HD and it is now "disabled." I haven't used iMovieHD for this purpose as I've only upgraded to it recently. I say "disabled" in quotes because it can still be done. You just have to have video in the timeline as well. I would keep a saved iMovie Project around with an already-imported video track included. You can turn the audio down to 0% on the video track. Now, proceed to the actual music itself...

Click "Audio" in the lower right hand corner tabs in the main window. This will bring up your iTunes Library. Chose your song and drag it into the timeline. Once it is finished importing, select "Share..." from the File menu. Then select "QuickTime" in the tabs and chose "Expert Settings" from the drop down menu. Click "Share" and another window with options will pop up. Chose "Audio to AIFF" and "Stereo 16 bit" from the two drop down menus. Change the filename to whatever you would like. You're now ready to click "Okay" and allow iMovie to do the rest. You'll be left with an AIFF file that you can now drop into iTunes and easily convert to MP3 or AAC (unprotected).

I'm sure someone could write an Automator or AppleScript to do this in batches.

While this does not preserve ID3 tags, it's a quick and dirty means to an end without having to burn and then re-import. Some may argue that burning and re-importing is easier and I wouldn't argue with them. But if you don't have a blank CD laying around, knowing how to do this may come in handy. Just an FYI.
