Jet Grind Radio on Dreamcast was one of the earlier games to use cell shading. Cell Damage and Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox) are another couple games that got into cell shading before Wind Waker. I'm not sure what the first was but I am pretty sure it wasn't Wind Waker. Although Wind Waker still does it well.
  2. Nintendo hasn't messed up the formula on GameCube's Timeline, Accomplishments Charted · · Score: 5, Insightful

Nintendo plays it safe for the most part. The GameCube continues a long tradition of building a good, reliable console that plays games. Plain and simple. And the games aren't bad. I enjoy mine. Metroid Prime rules, Wind Waker is highly enjoyable, and Viewtiful Joe is amazing. What's not to love? I think the pros heavily outweigh the cons. There's just too much focus from game critics on the marketshare. What does marketshare matter when your games are good, sales are good (doens't have to be the #1 seller to remain profitable), and you keep rolling out original titles (Crystal Chronicles as the most recent example). I think Nintendo is here to stay for quite some time. They definitely have not made the mistakes Sega made. They still have good brand-indentity.

Also, I'm a linux newbie so a distro with a good graphical installer is welcome.

I was not knocking video chat tech at all. My only comment was directed towards the predicted end of analog telephone (aka landline). I don't see it happening. Time will prove me right or wrong. So be it.

The comment about my mother never using iChat AV or VoIP was an aside; not directly related to the supposed eventual death of analog phones. I only used the comment to support the idea that there will continue to be a need for landlines so long as there are those who do not adopt the new, superior technology. Perhaps your mother and grandparents make great use of "video chat technologies." Wonderful. But not all people do or will. It's a niche, not a replacement. Still, I don't believe I was ever "knocking" the technology. Only pointing out that it is not ubiquitious and that I do not believe it will be for quite some time. I hope I'm wrong, though.

Don't know about DirecTV, but DishNetworks no longer requires a landline, IIRC. I know they told me to leave mine hooked up for the first two days so that it could make sure it wasn't pirated or something like that but I don't know if that's mandatory for all installs. Either way, the only benefit of leaving it hooked up to a landline is that you can order PPV from the remote and access your account info also. Otherwise, you have to call in to order movies, etc. Which, btw, is subject to an additional $1 for phone orders. Just FYI.

I had a similar problem and, being a linux newbie, I did some research. The problem isn't just the memory. It's also slow because many parts of a "newer" linux distro are compiled for 686 (Pentium III and higher) processors. This means your older 586 (Pentium) has to do more work. It can really eat into your window manager and X windows server. At any rate, it made my box (PII 350mhz) unusable and I opted for an upgraded box rather than recompile everything and troubleshoot.

Again, I'm a newbie and I'm just trying to vaguely recall the info I discovered that caused me to abandon much hope for my older box.
