However, people respect Torvalds and respect his opinion. He's not your average person.
What on earth has he done that would make people respect his opinion on GUIs? That's like respecting Stephen Hawking's ideas on interior decorating because he's such a great physicist.
Also, I predict that "Spring 06" means that in June we will see a few units come out in Japan, with limited availability in North America sometime around September, perhaps as late as November.
On launch day there were twenty of the Xbox 360 core systems and twenty of the Xbox 360 systems with hard drives.
Even if I didn't already know that some stores have gotten shipments and others will be getting more shipment before January, I'm calling bullshit, because I haven't heard of a single store which had anywhere near as many core systems as premium systems. It's usually about 1 core per 4 premiums. Next time you're trolling you should incorporate that new information.
So instead of waiting until the Christmas-ish time to make everyone's gaming season merry and bright, they decided to tease us with a mediocre launch of a paltry sum of systems?
Waah? They did release at Christmas-ish time. I'm confused.
The thing that I can't quite get is why they did this for hype (which I'm still convinced of, until intelligently rebuked) when they could have waited a little longer to make everything go smoothly.
So, do you believe every unsubstantiated rumor until it's proven to be untrue or just the anti-MS ones?
I'll let everyone else go through the beta-testing machines and titles before I toss a few hundred dollars into something that could end up sucking for another few years.
Fine by me, that's one less person trying to get theirs before I get mine. Could I have problems? Yes. Do I expect the fun I have playing while you wait to be worth it? Yes.
I would be fine with it too, if they hadn't advertised it as being unbundled. Then certain stores took it upon themselves to bundle them, instead of selling what was advertised. It's called a bait and switch and it's illegal because even though people don't have to buy it, if they don't, you've still waisted their time by advertising something you had no intention of selling them, so that they would come down to try and buy it.
Take the Civilization series, for example. It is a member of the strategy genre, one that also is more suitable for the PC, and it is one of the best-selling series ever.
I know Civilization has only ever exited on the PC, but what exactly makes it more suited to the PC? I wish Civ IV had been made for the Xbox 360 in addition to the PC, personally.
The reason isn't having any effect has nothing to do with there being an alternative to Windows. It's because all they're doing is forcing Microsoft to release a product that there is no demand for. Of course nobody is going to buy a product that is just like the regular one but with features that were already optional removed. And a version with links to competitors? That sounds more like a joke than anything else, but whatever..
They sent Lawrence Lessig before the US Supreme Court to make a muddle of Eldred v. Ashcroft, an important case that's now settled in favor of the media pigopolists.
Is that the quote you mean? I'm reading that to mean that they screwed up the case and lost, and when he says settled in favor of the media pigopolists, I took that to mean that the case was closed and that it ended in the pigopolists favor. Settled and settled out of court aren't the same thing necessarily. So I disagree that he was accusing them of being anything other than incompetent with that, assuming that's the quote you meant.
Well, I usually find the register pretty interesting, and certainly more informative than slashdot. So I don't see what your problem with it is. Unless it's just because they post things you disagree with. But I doubt anyone on slashdot would insult someone for no reason other than disagreeing with them.
Though that really brings me to what I think is the answer to your question. Slashdot edits apparently love to post links to anyone bashing open source/GNU/FSF/EFF so that they're readers can get all worked up in a tizzy. One of the defining characteristics of slashdot (and often it's readers) seems to be defensiveness.
But hey, maybe I'm just being defensive because I sort of like the register.
Second page, the EFF's credited with blowing a case that "only an EFF principal could blow" despite the fact that the article even says directly above that the case isn't closed yet.
So the case isn't closed yet. But does any person even remotely aware of current events think that the case has a chance if they're trying to make it so that you don't have to be searched to fly? I can't think of a better analogy than a sports one at the moment, so that's like saying that a football team didn't necessarily screw up, when they're down 52-0 in the fourth quarter. Sure, it's not over, but it might as well be.
obliquely accuses him of intentionally submarining efforts of rights advocates, page one even suggests that he sides with porkbarrel politicians.
So, you read the article... but it seems like you're blaming the author for something that you inserted between the lines or that your reading comprehension skills are sub-par. The only attack I saw was that the guy was extremely short sighted for screwing up the winnable fight because he just hated being searched. I don't see any accusation of him siding with porkbarrel politicians.
Judging by his unrepentent lack of humlity, I guess he's not that great of a visionary either.
Yeah, the description of him was what's called a joke. Not a very good one in my opinion, but jesus, calm the hell down.
I preordered about three months ago, and don't have one yet, so apparently nobody wanted to preorder one from that store in the last three months, otherwise Microsoft wasn't trying very hard to come in "just shy of the preorder numbers". But then again, why am I even responding to a post by an AC who claims he knows a guy who says that a Microsoft rep gave "gave him the impression"? That's about as lacking in credibility as you can get.
The attach ratio has never been higher because in order to buy a Xbox 360 from Gamestop or EB, you had to spend a minimum of $300 on accessories and games.
There might be some locations that require this but my friend and I both preordered from different EB games stores and weren't forced to buy any accessories. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't just make shit up.
I'm not saying all government endeavours are perfect. I'm just saying it's a huge cop-out to say "government all bad, private sector all good" when clearly the private sector is just as evil.
Nobody's quite as evil as the government I'm afraid. But even if the private sector were more evil, the reason the private sector is better is that they can't say buy my product or I throw you in jail, the government on the other hand can tell you to pay your taxes for projects you think are evil or throw you in jail.
What on earth has he done that would make people respect his opinion on GUIs? That's like respecting Stephen Hawking's ideas on interior decorating because he's such a great physicist.
The first part is opinion and the second part happens if you're playing the PC version too. Quality argument.
That's my prediction.
They said which game it was. It's an Xbox 360 exclusive, which is not a sequel, prequel or anything else. You're a moron.
Because it's made up?

What exactly is the difference between the original and your correction?
I agree this is annoying, but you can turn voice chat off. So you'd rather have a system with no voice chat than one where it's optional?
No, they aren't. Ever heard of the PSP? Maybe they did it poorly, but they did it first.
Because this is slashdot where everything is a conspiracy. You should get modded -1 for stupid question.

Lawyers who are only in it for the money a class action lawsuit would bring them would be much more likely to win, I'd be more than willing to bet.
You are clearly just a dog fanboy.
This has got to be Micro$oft's second biggest mistake ever. The first is creating the Windows product line.
I wish I could fuck up bad enough to make that many billions of dollars.

Yes, by selling more products at a lower price they sure are sticking it to you. Oh, by the way, you're a moron.
I'm sure they're including controllers, memory cards, eye toys, DVD remotes and probably even the stands they sell for the PS2 as hardware.
First of all, what makes it trumped up? Second of all, after reading a bunch of your posts, I have to ask, how much does Sony pay you?
