Same here. I scored fairly well on my SAT. The grade was lost, but by the time I managed to get to college I didn't need it because I was "nontraditional." My first college lesson was that there was a new word for old. :(

I don't doubt his claim of hundreds of billions. In fact, there's probably a hundred billion per month. That being said, I don't remember taking any mp3s or the odd copy of photoshop at gunpoint. Just because the owner of respective rights may be out of money doesn't mean they would get that money if the medium wasn't free. These people don't seem to remember that odd quirk about piracy. You get what you want to take at your leisure. You're not pressured by your bottom line. You're not pressured to think if it is a good purchase. You get it because you want it, and only because you want it. I've got many mp3s that I wouldn't be caught dead buying the album (or even the iTunes track) for purely because I don't think it is even worth the .99 per track. I didn't get that copy of photoshop because I thought it was an industry standard image manipulation software. I got it because it cost me an hour in download time. The exact same could be said if the company receives $100 or $500 in profit on that piece of software. There are different rules to piracy than those which piracy is measured.

Interesting. When someone puts blind faith in God, you call them brainwashed. When someone puts blind faith in science, you call them rational.

Science can be wrong, but there are methods to recreate the experiments and review the hypotheses in order to establish the correct findings. Religion is "always" right, and anything that challenges it is "always" wrong. Which one is more rational?

  11. Re:bah! on The Linux Filesystem Challenge · · Score: 2, Insightful

Agreed. Although Reiser4 looks very handsome, Linux needs to worry more about functionality and ease of use. Not filesystems. Joe Sixpack cares little for the filesystem even if he has a clue of what a filesystem actually is or does. He wants an easy to use, easy to get up and going machine that will play at least a couple of games, view a little porn, access his email, and perhaps get some work done on the side. If the filesystem is robust, then it's a bonus. Joe Sysadmin worries about the filesystem perks and quirks.

Heinz has about 60% of their business done outside of the US. Why would all their business be done in the US again? Teresa Heinz doesn't have much more than a 4% control of the company. Still a substantial amount for a company that size, but not enough to reflect in decision-making.

  15. Re:Extradition from Australia on World's First Warez Extradition Decided Soon · · Score: 1

Actually, if millions of people do engage in a 'crime' that hurts no one, one could argue that it isn't a crime. Sure, the only one(s) that are hurt are multi-billion dollar companies, but you could also bring up the point that the people pirating software might not even buy it if they couldn't pirate it. Take Photoshop for example. Adobe isn't out of any money if I pirate that program because I don't have enough know-how with the usage of it to warrant my parting with $600 of my hard earned money. I could pirate it, learn it well, then I'd be more willing to purchase it legally if I plan on doing anything commercial with it. In actuality, Adobe makes off with another sale if I do learn to work with it enough to start creating commercial quality images. MS is one of the few that are truly hurt by piracy. Most other companies actually benefit in small ways from piracy. I know this is a rant, but you can see where I'm going with this.
