  1. OSX Comes along again on Windows Vista Delayed Again · · Score: 1

Since Leopard is slated to come out some time early 2007, I'm thinking that this might be another blow to Microsoft.

OSX has released several versions since XP, and has been offering more and more of the features that Vista promises. It seems like MS has been trying to keep people hyped for the last few years, but at some point people are going to stop and realize that Apple is offering all of the features of Vista *now* and not X months from now.

  9. Problem solving is key on Introduction to Competitive Programming · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think there was too much focus on the coding itself in the guide. When it comes down to it, its the ability to solve problems.

The best way to practice for a programming competition is to treat it like a math competition. If you can think of efficient solutions and apply them quickly, you will do well. Remember that a lot of these competitions have runtime limits (usually 2-3 seconds on a predetermied isolated machine), so coding up the simplest solution won't always work.

Practice is also very important. Try ACSL, there are some sample problems available there, practice doing them and time yourself!

Also, for those who say that programming competitions are useless, they have no clue what they are talking about. What sets you apart in real-world development involves thinking up efficient solutions to difficult problems. Making the code easy to maintain and expand is just a simple step up when you do development in the industry.

  10. Phone storage capacity? on iPod nano, iTunes 5, iTunes Phone · · Score: 1

I wonder how much the storage capacity will be for the phone. Somewhere on the page it says "pre-upgraded to support up to 100 song", I'm not sure if I should interpret that as the song capacity.

Also, by looking at this phone, there doesn't seem to be a trackwheel or any sort of simple buttons to press.
I don't mean to sound like flamebait, but one of the major selling points for iPods was the look and the ease of use, it doesn't seem like this has either of those things.

  11. How about a split? on Realism vs. Style: the Zelda Debate · · Score: 1

I think the Zelda games should split into two different types of games.
    Darker-3D realism:
There could be a line of Zelda games that have realistic graphics but are also very dark, as how it seems this new Zelda game might be like. Target it toward an older audience, and not necessarily be full of gore, but perhaps just be overall darker ( think scarier, people dieing, etc. ).

    Cartoony-topdown:
This would be of the old style of games, with it being top down and more cartoony. This doesn't mean that it should be targeted toward kids, but perhaps a little safer for kids, a Kids to Adult game. I think this would also appeal to the Classic Zelda fans who liked the older top-down style of play.

Frankly, when it comes to dealing with women, none of that matters. It doesn't matter who's smarter, THEY are always right, regardless of how illogical it is and how little sense it makes.

On another note, there might be some light on why certain races may be less "intelligent" on average. I heard that back when slavery was common in the US, the smarter slaves were killed off with the fear of them eventually outsmarting their masters.

Will Apple stay the dual-processor course when they move to Intel? I don't mean dual core Pentiums. I mean two slabs of silicon, like a dual Xeon setup.

I hope Apple does stay with the Dual-CPU theme they've been sticking with for their high end systems. I'm sure you could get just as much power out of a dual core system, but one thing that's appealed to me about Macs is that they are different. Computers aren't exactly appliances any more for a lot of people, they're being treated a lot like how cars are treated these days even though they aren't quite at the status symbol level yet.

Just like how a lot of people choose to buy a certain car over another because it's different, there's something appealing about having something that's different. That's why I wasn't so happy about the switch to Intel x86, even if that means we get better CPU's from the switch. Similarily, if I was in the market for an entry-level Luxury Sedan, I wouldn't go for a 3 Series, C Class or even an A4, I'd probably go for something like a Saab even if the other three were technically superior, I just wouldn't want to be driving what everyone else drives.

Face it, people are lazy. When I want a song these days, I just feel too lazy to load up IRC and go search for the song on a channel or BT or whatever.
Most songs I download are from different artists, and those artists whose songs I really like, I usually just go across the street and grab the CD. But for regular songs, 99 cents is a small price to pay to not have to deal with the mess of searching for the song in p2p which often ends up being corrupted.

Adding all sorts of crumple zones and reinforcements around the cabin adds weight. Add to that all of the multiple airbags, and all of the ammenities that people expect in cars these days ( power windows, power door locks, heated seats, etc. etc. ) and the weight really grows even with lighter materials.

That's why the modern Mini Cooper is heavier than the older one.

  22. Handhelds aren't just about software... on Microsoft to Attack RIM with Magneto · · Score: 2, Interesting

Even though Microsoft has tons of money to spend, I think they will have a tough time beating the Blackberry.

I always thought PocketPC was kind of bloated, and suffered poor battery life mostly because Microsoft doesn't manufacture or develop the hardware as well.

However, RIM develops both the hardware and software ( with some minor exceptions ) and this makes it easier to make things efficient and more reliable. It's also the clean interface, you've got icons, a thumbpad and a trackwheel, I don't deed a bloody fingerprint scanner, or 3D acceleration to keep up with my daily schedule. This simplicity is what helped the low-end palm devices and the iPods sell very well.

The only weakness I see for RIM is MS Exchange. The Blackberry Enterprise Server(BES) works with the MS Exchange server to keep things in sync. I don't know if it would be legal for Microsoft to do this, but if Exchange suddenly refused to stop working with the BES, it might spell trouble for RIM.

Being a University of Waterloo student, I myself am rooting for RIM as they're a Canadian company and they're set up right next to campus.

I just hope the developers there get to keep their RIM-jobs.
    ... Sorry :)
