  1. RoR based PTO tool on Ask Slashdot: Open Source Employee Vacation-Day Tracking Software? · · Score: 1

I had built an RoR 2.x version based PTO tool to learn RoR (a copy of our company's HTML & JS based tool) but never got around to releasing it. I was going to upload it to heroku.com but was waiting to port it to v3.x If you want I can upload it to github and you can take it from there.

I would like to add the from what I understood, BK clients are not clients per-se but more like peers and BK server handling all these peers. Now if one of these peers muck around then it might destroy the whole system which is what Larry was afraid of. Understand that P2P technology is itself pretty new and implementing a distributed SCM using something like this is pioneering for which I will credit Larry and that is what Linus was also doing.

Actually he did a good bit of explaining BK to the folks on that list. What Tridge did was wrong according to Linus is because, from what I understood, BK clients are not actually clients but peers and BK is a P2P system more than a client-server system. So for Tridge's software to work with BK, it has to be a full fledged peer and since P2P/distributed technology implementation in SCM world is so new, Larry is afraid that his software won't be able to handle such a peer.

Actually to get Linux to the capabilities of OS X (think 'core image') what one needs is a version of QT/GTK which can use the advanced features of these new cards. Just like we have QTopia for the FB version of displays (lower end), the KDE/GNOME developers need a library which gives the ability to program directly to the GPUs. I donot know if QT gets enough funds from IBM/ATI/nVIDIA they will be willing to do it or not. But to my mind, it would be the easiest way to get there for Linux.

... At one time it was defined as the following:

    2) Single user with network
    3) Full network without X
    4) Not Used
    5) Full network plus X
    6) Shutdown
Now most of the distro have variations on this but not much. Gentoo has boot and default. I would like it to be something like:
    0) Shutdown/reboot
    1) Super user mode
    2) ---
    3) Local Server mode, no X
    4) Secure server mode for outside world
    5) Desktop mode with X
    6) ---
or some variation thereof. Is there a way to incorporate this concept with a make file and write an init process driven by that makefile ? On the bootpic front I would really like something like the KDE/Gnome splash-screen during the boot process showing the state of different devices/processes instead of the Suse inspired splash-screen used by most distros nowadays.

Talking about Blu-Ray & HD-DVD, didn't Steve Jobs say that Tiger (OS 10.4) is going to have QT with H.264 which is compatible with HD-DVD and how you can resize the window without any loss of resolution and other cool features. Now I donot know much about H.264 but if they can do that and cannot do with Blu-Ray than Blu-Ray has a disadvantage there.
And another thing, nice to see another fight between MS & Apple with BR & HD-DVD.

From Jargon File (4.3.0, 30 APR 2001) : frobnicate /frob'ni-kayt/ vt. [Poss. derived from frobnitz, and usually abbreviated to frob, but `frobnicate' is recognized as the official full form.] To manipulate or adjust, to tweak. One frequently frobs bits or other 2-state devices. Thus: "Please frob the light switch" (that is, flip it), but also "Stop frobbing that clasp; you'll break it". One also sees the construction `to frob a frob'. See tweak and twiddle. Usage: frob, twiddle, and tweak sometimes connote points along a continuum. `Frob' connotes aimless manipulation; `twiddle' connotes gross manipulation, often a coarse search for a proper setting; `tweak' connotes fine-tuning. If someone is turning a knob on an oscilloscope, then if he's carefully adjusting it, he is probably tweaking it; if he is just turning it but looking at the screen, he is probably twiddling it; but if he's just doing it because turning a knob is fun, he's frobbing it. The variant frobnosticate' has been recently reported.
