Ok, Lets talk about the science of RF and cancer rates.

What we know, without a cause being understood:
    * Cancer rates are sky rocketing.
    * Natural systems are failing (Bees)
    * RF energy at certain levels does cause soft-tissue damage
    * We are in a sea of RF energy:
                * RF energy is naturally occurring and is partly responsible for mutations (evolution)
                * Man made RF is at an all-time high.
                * It is not well understood how combinations of RF can cause damage.

Italian electromagnetic fields three times other areas and Vatican Cardinals jailed:
    http://www.epicentro.iss.it/ben/precedenti/ottobre/1_en.htm

Ok, so we have _some_ evidence that RF causes real damage. Its documented.
We have some people who claim sensitivity to RF energy (Do you _like) florescent lights?, Those transformers are noisy!! Both audible range and RF wise)

What I hear most people saying on Slashdot is that people who suffer from real RF exposure should just suck it up! So what if you never smoked and you get cancer! Too bad! We still get to enjoy all that high speed porn.

What is it about Slashdot that it becomes an empathy free zone. What happened to Science? We have someone stating that they have an observed phenomenon, we have weak epidemiological evidence that long-term exposure to RF causes real problems. Talk about your junk science!!

Its always curious when the suits of big ISPs talk about something they really don't understand. I worked at a large International ISP, and everyone from the Ops Manager up didn't understand the technology. They were "results oriented" and they apparently didn't need to know.

So, I can just imagine what they folks at the top were being told by "middle management".

    Sigh.

And imagine, no one wanted Block D of the wireless spectrum to deliver wireless services and provide real alternatives. The Internet has been bought and sold to the highest bidders, and now we all have to live with the moronic decisions being made by people who are only interested in squeezing as much revenue of the porn addled, facebook addicted, morons paying the bills.

One of the things that sticks out about what Apple has done with a rebranded NextOS, is that they knew they had good technology that had been proven to work, would scale, and support lots of lovely apps with little work. There is almost no reason for Microsoft to be in the OS business anymore, Novell isn't (it all runs on GNU/Linux), Apple really isn't (its UN*X!), and neither are any of the Linux companies (They all run GNU/Linux). Even Sun is not in the OS business, they are in the hardware business (ditto Apple). Microsoft is in the office productivity business. There is no reason that Winblows 2009 could not be a rock solid kernel of whatever flavour you like, bundled so that Office only runs on that version... kinda like what Apple has done with MacOSX. WindblowsX. Make it secure from the ground up, make it beautiful, make it fast! Oh, and make it run Office.

This is an interesting point. There isn't alot new here to see, but I have thought of a new litmus test. If you want to be a scientist working in this area or even a supporting organization you need to kill some animals first. You should know what death can look like, I would suggest something bloody and messy like slaughtering a market ready pig by hand. This would give people in this field a little understanding the precariousness of life and how quickly it is snuffed out.

Or a cull like the seal hunt on the east coast of Canada. Club a hundred seals a day for a week, come home covered in blood. Still ready to produce mutants that could wipe out civilization?

My point: Science left behind exploration and "progress" is the mantra. Progress may get dressed in terms of human advancement, but it is really code for profit. No one does this research without the end in mind. What could the end in mind be? Pure reasearch of course.. bull! The end in mind is making more money for the corporation that they work for.

The last question that I have outstanding is how is it so many scientists are willing to produce weapons, chemicals, munitions without questioning how thier work might contribute to the suffering of others.

Ok, I was going to reply that your an idiot.. but I won't. I will say that you don't understand what the parent post said. You need to shift your point of view, try some clean slate thinking.

If the system was different, and it can be, how could people receive compensation for creating new ideas, not just gadgets. Hmmm.. they could have a different relationship with the holders of capitol. A programmer could say, I will let you rent my idea (under patent) in return for $300 / month for as long as you need it. But the barrier for entry into this idea marketplace is the cost of legal assistance to manage intellectual property and an employment system that skews future captital creation in favour of those who ALREADY have capital.

The system is made to favour those who already have capital (property) and create a significant barrier for entry for those who don't. Most Americans own a very nice piece of paper called a Mortgage. The middle class kinda made a unwritten deal that said.. ok, in favour of not becoming godless pinko commies, we want a share of the pie. i.e. a high standard of life that we will all contribute to in exchange for the capital (property) holder employing our kids when they graduate from university with a $60k student loan.

Here is the important part. The deal is being changed, pretty soon all bets will be off, and then what happens? Who knows, I am sure the alien invasion will distract us from the fact that the robber-barrons are winning. So.. how about it? Some clean slate thinking?

I love it when somebody calls me a fucknut.. its just so sweet. Back to the discussion at hand.

Something happened when we entered into the industrial age, humans became capable of executing large scale changes to their environment. Until the Industrial Revolution, building stuff, moving stuff, keeping fed took alot of energy. This was just for the basics, never mind building a 4000 sq ft home for you and your loved one. Nope, most people lived in shacks and often had a short time on the earth. To say that my life is not easier because of modern invention would folly, but driving a sport-ute to work doesn't necessarily make my life better, just more convenient.

My point is that scientific progress is coupled with industrial expansion. Its motivator is profit and utopian visions, not altruism. From time to time there have been great men and women of science, and those great people are saying the same things that I am. We are running down an unlit path in the pitch dark of night, do we really know were we are going and what the consequences are???

I'll leave you with a quote from a great scientist that sums ups my fears about our progress, Albert Einstein

This is a classic scientific reply. "I am only searching for knowledge of the universe" The subtext here is I am searching for God, but I digress. The search for knowledge excuse is a way for business and Governments (read military) to leverage scientific in the making of weapons and industrial tools. We shall see how our inventions have helped humanity in a couple of generations. I predict that many will come back to haunt us, like DDT and the widespread use of mercury. It must be very hard for scientists of the world to question their indoctrination.
