Farmers everywhere would appreciate weatherproof, pest-proof grain bins that breathe, but don't ever explode.
Just like farmers and consumers in Europe appreciate genectically modified Canola. Whoops, that was banned, umm ok, how about modern irragation methods.. err nope, that depleting the water table. Ok, on more factory style turkeys that can't even procreate by themselves. Well, thier pale white breates look nice and taste like ummm chicken? Maybe...
Point: The lock step death march of science and technology is consuming and polluting the planet at an enormous rate. I am all for scientific understanding, but most technology is for profit. Not that I am against profit, but I would like it to be more... sustainable.
I for one agree that the parents are at fault for not holding thier kids accountable and allowing them to be raised by a system. This is were we part company. The school system is designed to create alienation in families and break down the connections of kin and community. The prime directive of the school system is to produce consistent worker/consumer units, not educated citizens. Don't let your schooling get in the way of your education.
I like your response, but I will argue one point (this is Slashdot after all, I have to nitpick something!)
Anyways, I say we consume because it is the nature of the Industrial Method. The Industrial Method says that you must consume all possible resources for maximum profit. Good intentions, alternative energy cars, wind power count for nothing. The Industrial Method is a blind march towards consuming everything!!
And this is the bitch of it. I don't think we can extract ourselved from the Industrial Method until it breaks. Which may mean, when the oil supply is corrupted...
You and all those who modded you 'funny' are an interesting bunch. Reading most of the +5s responses have made me sick to my stomach. I didn't realize that slashdot has so many eugenics fans who can't wait to cull the herd of the stupid, lame, and ignorant.
Might as well start building the camps now so we have someplace to put all these unfortunate genetic souls who are not good-enough. You'll have to build the ovens large enough for all those millions of people you deem to be inferior, lets make sure I have the list complete:
ignorant
stupid
Religious (wouldn't want to stand in the way of the science)
And why you are at it you might as well get rid of any of those other groups you don't like. Have you ever stopped to think that the geek may not be the top of the food chain?
Oh, I've got a couple more for the list, you will probably come to the same conclusion as the Nazis and you will want to get rid of:
Jews
Blacks
Gays
Communists
Political/ social opponents
I would write more, but how can I make any headway with such a bunch of facists. Most of them hiding as anon cowards.
Ok, but just make sure you flash your new improved ID to the scanner as you go into work (We need to make sure you are not a terrorist with a valid license) and flash it when you enter the mall, and flash it when you enter your gated community. This should keep you very very very safe from terrorists.
Do you really trust the powers that be not to abuse such a system? The founding father didn't.
Who indeed can disagree. I think this is a fallacies argument, but none the less it's not like Big Business to condition kids to be better consumers later.
A few years ago I worked for a fairly large ad agency that sent me around the country to talk to a couple of Internet ad-engine companies. To cut to the chase , the value of serving ads is more about collecting consumer behaviour that selling ads. Consumer information is very very valuable. So they have taken a cost center (reuniting lost kids with parents) into a behaviour monitoring program that initially they can sell to other Disney business units, but maybe others as well.
Since you do indeed like the program so much, why don't you come down to the offices Corporate Bum Boys Inc and we can have the surgically implanted RFID put into your forehead in just a couple of hours. You do want to be an early adapter don't you? As a special bonus, we will give a subscription to the NASCAR channel for three months, just for filling out our profile, I mean survey.
I try not to be a tin-hat slashdotter, but Disney deserves to get beaten up once in a while.
Hrm.. old music? I happen to have an interest in Bluegrass music. Try to find a copy of any of Ricky Skaggs bluegrass music online (Not his country songs). Nada. BTW Ricky has multiple Grammy awards for his Bluegrass albums...
I remember being 13 and signing up for Columbia house and being excited because I would be able to order all the stuff that they distribute. Nope, they only wanted to sell me the stuff that was crappy, forget getting Bauhaus or The Cure. Anyways.. this is big business, and it will only serve the interests of Big Business.
Oh yeah, Apple: Bluegrass deserves its own catagory away from Country!!
True. But then I'm sure you're against:
Public Education
Internal Revenue Service
Assault Weapons Ban
Welfare
Social Security
What?! Have you been reading my email?! Heh, mostly kidding. I would group public education, welfare, and SS under the heading of Industrial State and Corporate tools to further the end goal of a New Utopia. I am not saying that the utopian view is a bad one, but I am not sure I signed up for it, and I am not sure who the benfactors are of the New Utopia. I suspect that they are the same benefactors as the feudal systems.
As for assualt weapon and the IRS. Heh, well some might argue that they go hand in hand. Opps I am going to end-up on a watch list... anyways. The IRS is just another extension of the Industrial State, I could care less. See comments above about the New Utopia
As for assault weapons. I don't think that most people need an AK47. This isn't Mogadishu. That kinda goes for handguns as well. But I will tell you that in countries like Britain, Australia and Canada, the limiting of these weapons only leaves them in the hands of criminals and potentially abusive police states. Go figure.
Anyways, thanks for the conversation. It was fun. I would like to think that I am not a radical thinker, but I might becoming one. The laundry list of things that I might be opposed to is interesting food for thought and I was impressed with the response. I guess I think that we need to revist our assumptions about what we Really Want TM. I think our current economic course is poisioning the land and sea. And I worry that we may be putting the first world into a place that looks very much like the third.
Cheers.
I think if you could speak to some of the founding fathers, they would say that the constitution is there to try to protect you from ever-increasing state powers. The American Revolutionists had released themselves from a tyranical English King and did not trade for a tyranical American King.
The constitution was an effort to define and limit the states powers. Weaken centralized power by using the courts and legislatures, as well as state powers. If you want to be free (you want to be free don't you?) then you have be suspicious indirect Government intentions. Questioning what the Government does to "protect" you must be done in any healthy democracy. My assertion is that Government serves the intentions of its biggest supporters.
This is a very interesting point. Although since 9/11 I don't think there have been any more airliners hijacked, never mind flown into a building. I suggest that the Airlines pre-9-11 respresented the best bang for the buck. It was only a matter of time before some villain figured out how poor the security was and exploited it.
As for ID that says TERRORIST on the top, I have not seen the state department listing those on thier web site. As a matter of fact, I bet the terrorist IDs look better than yours. Your argument is flawed. The state has no interest in protecting isa-kuruption (317695). It has interesting in perpetuating its power for the sole purpose of perpetuating its power.
Nobody will look out for your best interests better than you.
Oh look right here in the preamble... "secure the Blessings of Liberty...". What do you think that means?
It means that Liberty is a natural right that should not be interfered with by any-body. Be that corporate or Government.
And what about that beautiful document called the Declaration of Independance... "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty...".
Stop being a corporate toady and stand up for your rights!! You are not a number, or a machine, you are a free man!!
This brings up an interesting point. The Government is not my parent!
I can choose to monitor my childrens bahavior. Are you a child of the Government? Do you want to be treated like one?:) Bitch?!
We have a special place for you back with the Gimp.
My wife has given birth to two beautiful children in the last three years. We used to like to stay up late and sometimes I couldn't sleep. Now I go to bed at 10:30 PM if I can, and stay there as long as possible. Which is usually until 7 AM when our 2 year old wakes up and wants breakfast!
1. Have a crazy dictator north of you that threatens to blow up everyone once a week. Stops and starts nuclear 'research' programs on a whim, and kidnaps people from nearby countries to make movies and pron for him.
2. Install high speed bandwidth.
3. Profit!!!
I have been on both sides of this fence. I have been a manager and the tech building, installing, operating etc. But I think most corporations have it backwards. The train is not:
Technology -> Tech Folks -> Managers
Its: Management -> Technology and Staff
Most managers don't know much about technology, that would be OK, but they don't listen to the people that do. But this is changing
Non-technical managers are being replaced by those who have a clue stick and will beat those managers who don't. In another five years, people who grew up (in the industry) with OpenSource will know how to manage the technology and the people.
But what they don't say is that at the next table are the decendants of the Tibetan kingdom and the Chin empire. And they are looking to settle the score!
What?!?! Fair Trade coffee makes things better? Do you know why coffee futures are in the toilet? Because Vietname and Brazil started dumping crap coffee on the market some where around Y2K all this coffee started showing up on the market and the price went throught the floor.
The people I see making money on fair trade coffee are the distributers and retailers. The rest of the money just props up farmer that should be growing something else!
And here is alternative view on why fair trade treats no-one fairly, and the new world order (coffee cartel) some people are calling for is a recipe for disaster: Not-so-fair-trade
Oh my, what I love about left-leaning herb(avor) eating pinko communists is that they love to tell other people how bad and wrong and evil they are. Since most left leaning pinko communists are moral relativists, I don't know how they determine how something is good or bad.. but getting back to the subject....
There are many people in the world who believe that thier God gave to them the right to consume all that they can. After all, it was provided by God for them. So don't be surprised when people assume they have the right to do whatever the hell they want with the 10 tonne tracktor-trailer full of PCBs, maybe dump it in your lettuce patch.

The world is out of balance. The rules of property and fair-use are out of wack. Lets think back to circa 1776 and what the American Rebels had in mind. They wanted free Men to be able to be free of the tyranny of kings and mobs (slashdot anyone?!) and build the best, most tranquil future any christian white man could imagine.
Fast Forward to the wide-spread use of the train. Steam trains are pretty destructive vehicles when they burn coal and wood, they spew huge hot cinders into fields and burn down crops. The farm owners sue the railways, who are barely making payroll. The railways then get the government to pass laws so the farmers can't sue the railways for damages. How does this relate to consuming vast amounts of resources without a thought.. Once the railway owners could trample the rights of farmers to get compensation for losses created by steam trains, the legislature placed corporate welfare above indivdual freedom and created the environment for alot of corporations and indivduals to place themselves above the law and above you, the citizen.
Imagine a different reality. Imagine that the space you inhabit is legally yours and people can't impose. Extended assault laws if you will that prevent people from creating enough pollution that you would be impacted. In a city for example, driving a car, along with the other million people is like assulting the individual who suffers from asthma. Now I am starting to sound like a pinko communist.
It is obvious to me that the left has failed to make any impact in actually creating change on how people view thier world and thier place in it. The left ends up being coop-ted by commercialist and merchants and governments: choose this fuel effecient car, it the green car. What!$%^@%$! A green car, what is that.
Anyways, people need to stop telling other people what to do, but they also need to stop imposing thier pollution on others with penalty. BTW, creating a government tax as penalty doesn't really change peoples behaviors.
I co-administrate a number of solaris machines and have created a bastion-host environment that forces all users to use the bastion and then work from there using a fake root account that uses sudo. The only password an admin needs is his own on the bastion host, sudo and ssh keys do the heavy lifting and everything gets logged. As an admin, I do not know the root password, and I like it that way.
Every action I take as root is logged through the sudo facitlity to a central logging server. Users who need role accounts and such log in through the bastion host and a number of sudo scripts log them in through ssh into the account. Its not a perfect system, but when admins leave, there is only one password to change and root is locked up in a cabinet on that odd chance that you need to do fsck (which the only time that I have found that I need the actual root password).

I love listening to armchair environmentalists that sit behind thier keyboards and preach that "we are all doomed if you don't change your ways. What?! really?! I am so glad you told me because 30 years of being aware of what is going on in science and the popular press didn't alert me that very fact. Can you tell me more about how to live my life? As far as I am concerned there are probably only a couple of groups in North America that can say that they contribute more than they take from the earth. The first being the Amish who live close to the earth and those who are off grid and manage thier own resources. Those of not in those groups are not much more than vampires commited to global stewartship through force every time we fill up our tank or buy goods made with slave labour in a communist country. How the hell can the Internet be free?! I have worked in the Internet industry for a long time (10+ years) and I know for a fact that circuits, routers, staff cost lots and lots of money. You know, another word for communist is thief... you want someone else to pay for your internet connection.
Power blackouts affect even those living off-grid. I assume that these people pay taxes that are used to prop up businesses and people affected by the blackout and covering some private losses with public money. But this is a side issue to growing power demand and use.
To me, a centralized system will never be able to keep up with demand. People assume that it is a tap that you turn on without really having to think about where this power comes from and how much energy is really needed to power even a modest number of homes. If people are serious about this problem, which I don't think most people are, there needs to be a number of steps made to force people to change thier power-use behavior.
1. Power is too cheap and is still subsidized too much. Stop subsidizing large captial expences and capitalize individuals to replace all appliances with super low use appliances.
2. Capitalize decentralized generation for alternatives. Once the subsudies for coal and natural gas are gone, the alternatives will start to look much better: solar, wind, tidal, and other localized power generation systems.
3. Build a strategic plan that includes some centralized power generation. There will always be a need for shared resources for hospitals, government buidlings.
The current infrastructure is failing. It is failing because the basic engineering tenants of managed service and growth have been undercut by neo-free market economics. Until we have built new principles of how power is generated, we are going to continue to have blackouts and other issues. Welcome to the third world.
