Well, you get to recieve lots of special limited time offers from select third party affiliates as I'm sure some of the privacy conditions will change as a result of this.
Has anybody recieved any notification of privacy policy changes yet?
"writes to point out that book excerpts are available at insearchofstupdity.com, "
Now, of course I didn't RFTA, especially on a Slashback where there's tons of them, but I was just wondering how effective it is to offer excerpts when Amazon lets you browse large chunks. Now, that being said, I don't know how long these excerpts are, I was just pointing out something that I noticed.
"Setting aside the question of whether this is a good deal or not, one has to wonder whether AOL is desperate for new customers and resorting to bribery, or just progressing to the next step of branding."
Actually, now I'm starting to wonder how cheap an internet connection IS for AOL. If there are plenty of ISPs out there selling service for $9.99 a month, it makes you wonder what AOL's profit margin is on that.
A word of caution to fellow Slashdotters who may be more tech-savvy than female-savvy.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT ask a woman with an mp3 player if she has TunA. Odds are you will be smacked, probably with the mp3 player too if its that time of the month.
Kind of off-topic, but I'm really curious as to how much these game companies have to pay (or how much free stuff their given) to be included on this list. Does anybody happen to know how those things work?
Since I'm sure there are plenty of Slashdotters who have worked at/currently work at some of the cellphone companies, or other companies that have bene accused of doing this stuff, and who work in the customer support level where these "mistakes" supposededly sometimes get made, can anybody clarify if the companies do in fact tell you to ignore mistakes?
I'm very interested in hearing the other side of this story.
Just to let you know, this isn't a troll/flamebait post, but....that being said.....God, how many bloody franchises can milk the Mage-Knight game? Yeah, it was a fun game when it first came out, I should know, I helped beta test it. But now every single god-damned franchise out there has a game that uses roughly the same system, and comes with the same prepainted miniatures on the little click bases.
Marvel did it, Battletech did it, now Starwars. Whats next? A Matrix miniatures game? Lord of the Rings?
Personally, I'm getting sick of this obvious money grab.
Well, this makes perfect sense. The Chinese are striving for the moon, so Bush just wants to get back there...setup a nice base....and um.....prepare things so we have an easy time "liberating" them once they land there.
"If they want their product to sell, why not make it worthwhile and put in stuff that tech-savvy people would use, like Tremor (integer Ogg Vorbis decoding) support for those who don't want to pay Fraunhoffer."
Because tech-savvy people are a very small market compared to the masses of people who are not tech-savvy. Hate to break it to you, but the average person could give two flying fucks about Ogg Vorbis. HP is not doing this to fill a niche market, that is typically done by smaller, more agile companies who need to break into the industry. Instead, they are going with the biggest market possible with a tried and true product/business plan and they will attempt to muscle their way through things.
The important thing to do is not only listen to the fans and their suggestions, but try to figure out WHY they say the things they do. Sure a lot of people bitch about something being nerfed, but whats the underlying reasoning for their bitching? Do they just want to be better than everybody? Or do they honestly feel their class is underpowered?
"so that it's population can work on something better...maybe higher level jobs."
So if the white-collar "thinking-mans" job is no longer seen in the same light, and outsourced, what would these new higher level jobs be that we are supposed to move on to that are supposedly better?
"If you do it the VC way, they will force some people on your board, heck they will force you to _have_ a board."
And this is not always a bad thing. Keep in mind that VCs WANT you to make as much money as you can, because its in their best interest for you to do it. Also keep in mind that they have a lot of business experience themselves, and can be valuable resources.
Just cuz they may put some restrictions on things and seek control, doesn't mean that they are entirely a bad thing.
"# Don't get business cards until you absolutely need them (or print yourself as required)"
The rest of your post was fine, but this is completely wrong. Business cards are dirt cheap to print at Kinko's or somewhere. What are you going to do when you meet potential clients/customers? Are you going to ask if they have a pen to write down your website or phone number? No, well, not if you want their business at least.
Business cards are a great way to make contacts because it contains all of your important information, and depending on the card itself, lets you make a statement. They should be some of the first things you get when starting your business.
I predict that if this game ever hits the market, that it will rival WinXP and Photoshop in the number of copies that are being traded on P2P. Seriously, this is like when Madonna released that track on P2P yelling "What the fuck do you think you're doing?!", only its a game, and will probably be funnier.
" Paris Hilton's reality TV is a waste of spectrum whether analog or digital."
But when else would you get to see the most stereotypical example of that girl in highschool who you desperately wanted, but who would have nothing to do with you, have to live on a farm, and stick her arm halfway up a cows ass? I, for one, welcome our new Reality TV snobs....errr.....overlords.
Don't forget Japanese shows that have made their way over here to the states. Like Most Extreme Elimination Challenge for example, which is a redubbed (hilariously too I might add, although I wouldn't be totally surprised if they really said those things in the real Japanese version. My friend from Osaka told me its based off a very old Japanese TV show called Takeshi's Castle. Makes me wish I could afford to get Japanese channels on the cable for my dorm. Actually....makes me wish I could afford cable for my dorm period.
This is a little off-topic, but having just seen Matrix: Revolutions for the first time last night, I almost got physically violent during some of the scenes with that dumb kid who reloads the ammo and eventually "believes in himself" enough to open the damn gate.
I hereby nominate him for the Jar Jar Award of Personal Excellence.
" Its worth mentioning that content wise, there is almost no parallel between the Silmarillion and the Bible."
You are correct, it is more similar to the Torah. I swear to god, the biggest mistake of my academic career in highschool was deciding to do a research paper on the Silmarillion before I even knew what it was.
I ended up successfully arguing that Sauron was in fact a force of good (don't ask how, it was a long time ago, but I got an A). However, do you have ANY idea how hard it is to do a research paper on a book that reads like this:
"And so-and-so begot so-and-so, who begot so-and-so, who went on to do many great things, and eventually begot so-and-so."
Now watch WoTC roll out a new antique looking "Roman D20" game and jack up the price a few grand. As if they weren't charging through the nose already.

Did anybody else read that as
"on the erotic implications of Nanotechnology"
Maybe this is a sign I need to stop looking to technology to satisfy my sexual needs.
Apple?

I hope Lance Bass is a Republican!

Never again....(shudders)
Perhaps it was the character sheet with Cheetoh stains on it?
