I'm a geek, and am definitely familiar with computers and whats going on, but when it comes to programming, or creating a prototype of an electronic device, I'm hosed since I don't have those skills and by the time I was able to teach myself them...it would be obsolete.

Can you suggest any resources for someone in my situation to find people who can fully handle those aspects of it? What about manufacturing? What is a good starting point for that for someone who knows absolutely nothing about it?

Unfortunately I don't see any MMORPG ever becoming MAJORLY story driven. Why? Because it is not as satisfying for the majority of their players to actually have to think through the story to progress. Remember, all MMORPGs are in essence...are glorified Skinner Boxes. Having to think through the story is simply a barrier in their clicking through of menus to get their reward. And like you said, it doesn't matter what the story is if the end result is that the quest itself is a generic "kill X, return with Y and be rewarded with Z".

What is to stop South Korea from using nanotech weapons against us (presuming the tech is actually put into weapon form some day)? The answer is...not much of anything. And because of that, I would much rather we had researched the hell out of it and were prepared for it than live in lala land pretending that the technology and people's intentions to use it for their own personal gain will suddenly disappear overnight if we ban this.

Banning the technology isn't the solution...the solution can be found in trying to solve the underlying social issues that would cause someone to want to use the tech to harm people.

I mean, I can't exactly blame them. What I CAN do is blame the people who write previews and judge things to be the best thing since sliced bread without analyzing some of the features and seeing how similar it is to whats out there.

A perfect example of this was the farce of those supposed "Video Game Awards" that just happened....I don't even remember what they were called, but what I do remember happening is that games that weren't even released yet were winning awards like Game of the Year and other such nonsense. If you dumb your life down in essence so that you just have to worry about living, eating and drinking, sleeping and being warm...those things are still more or less "required" to get by, while Play is not. The question is...where do you draw the line between Work and Play.

To me, the line becomes drawn when I have deadlines, quotas, expectations, and the very real risk of losing income. This all adds a lot of stress, and I cannot simply walk away from it because it is how I make a living. Play on the otherhand is something I can walk away from at any time for any reason...whether I'm bored, frustrated, found something new, have more important things to do, etc. There is potentially some stress with Play, such as with competitive Play, however it is nowhere near on the same level as with Work.

To your point, yes, it can be accomplished by just setting the value to a higher number...however what you need to take into consideration are two things:

First, there are rules within the gameworld much like there are rules within reality. They operate differently, but just as you can't go printing as much money as you want in real life, you can't give people as much gold as they want in the game. It would simply unbalance the economy.

The second thing you need to take into consideration is the time spent on this, which is quite real indeed. These farmers are being paid for their time to play this game. Not very much, but they are still being compensated.

I'm not saying gold farming doesn't suck, or that it does not harm the games that it invades...but these people most certainly DO contribute something to society in terms of spending since this involves the transaction of REAL money. And while it is asinine that this flourishes, it is definitely not ridiculous when you look at the systems in place that allow for farming to continue.

I remember the day when the best strategy guides were the thick books that CAME WITH THE DAMN GAME! And if I sound like an old fart...keep in mind that I'm only 22. This has been a recent trend to put as little information in with the game as possible. Sometimes games only include a controller layout quicksheet and nothing else aside from a few lose ad flyers floating around in the box. I wonder how much of a cut the publisher gets from the strategy guide companies to do that?

I haven't purchased a strategy guide since I got on the internet, and sites like gamefaqs are making them fast obsolete. But give me the good ol days of nicely produced minibooklets over a $20, mostly fluff strategy guide any day. I mean hell, for games like Diablo, half the info in the guide was obsolete come the first patch.
