Please, as someone in the marketing/PR industry, I ask you on behalf of my colleagues to not associate him with us. Perhaps a job on Wallstreet would be more suitable for his "special talents".
You're right AC. I vote to change all suprnova.org links to suprnova.org (check the header). If people think they have to pay for it, they won't go for it, and the media will go chase them down instead of the real one.
In all seriousness, people here are dismissing these entities because it is illegal to do this. What people aren't taking into consideration is that this is a group of Hollywood bigwigs. Its not like they are totally adverse to having one of their "people" contact someone in lets say...Russia, and provide anonymous funding for them to carry this out.
Remember guys, just because the laws are in place to prevent this stuff, doesn't mean people won't just ignore the laws, especially when they have a lot of money on the line like the top execs at these labels.
The reason Freenet isn't mentioned is because quite frankly, it falls flat on its face. Sure the concept is there, and I'd love for it to take off as much as anybody, but who are we kidding? The performance absolutely sucks, and could in no way be considered a substitute for anything else out there.
And while its not terribly difficult to create a torrent now, you still need a tracker. I think we can look forward to a lot more content coming onto the network since youy don't need to worry about the tracker. And of course with content comes crap, but still, I'd take it if I could filter it.
I know all the discussion has been over using lethal ammunition, but I think these would be great tools for law enforcement when there's a standoff or something, or during riots. Imagine being able to send a robot into a firefight instead of risking the life of a police officer? I mean, obviously there's a tradeoff in skill and ability, but I'm sure there are situations where it would be a better option.
Yeah, except once thing you're forgetting is that todays younger military people have started to SERIOUSLY get into video games in their free time and during simulation time. So not only are they more likely to own you in CS, when they work together, they have a much better understanding of solid military tactics than the average 1337 gamer.
Personally, I wish there were servers for games like Desert Combat where one side would be reserved for only people connecting from a military base or something, and let other people be on the other team. It'd be good practice, and you never know, in the event the military team starts getting owned, they might learn a new tactic or two. Although somehow I don't think they're going to be instructing troops on bunnyhopping any time soon.
I realize that I have little experience with the kind of flaming you must get. However, I think the easiest method would be to just ignore it, and implement measures that help you ignore it.
And as a personal aside, while I did openly laugh at you with my friends, I do have to concede that it was a bitchin concept and I couldn't have done anything NEAR that myself. Kudos on that.
That's a pretty harsh tone to take with Wil over something like that. The guy is entitled to not make himself 100% available to the public. God knows I wouldn't want to deal with all the email that would flood in daily. But I'd feel bad about getting it filtered out because I would want to respect my fans. This is probably his polite way of keeping in touch with the rest of the community (which he is a regular member of despite his status) in a fashion that also manages the reality of him needing to enforce such restrictions.
I personally wouldn't mind a semi regular event springing from this. It would be like having a celebrity regular. Every now and then we'd have a story devoted to him. And people would have to agree (or be modded accordingly) to not pester him in other stories.
Eh, who cares, its funny as hell when it happens. I say more catnip for the lowuids! Oh god, that's actually pronouncable word. I think thats what I'll say if I mock one in the future.
I've seen the "if you don't like it, speak with your money" argument on here a few times, and have often made a similar argument in the past.
However, I think one of the reasons this forum is a good thing is because Valve has screwed up royally. Many of their once happy customers are pissed. By letting them know, and letting other businesses know, we have an effect on the way things will turn out, however minor it may be.
This frankly, is a good alternative to just not buying the game. Because if you don't buy the game, they have no reason of knowing you decided not to buy it because of Steam. They might just assume you didn't like the game.
Which leads me to my next point. Instead of just not buying it, if you want to do something more effective, buy it and immediately return it, and be CRYSTAL CLEAR when you explain why to the person that it is because you are unhappy with Valve's choice in requiring Steam for this and you do not find it a satisfactory product. State this clearly and loudly.
I know its wishful thinking, but at least you can DO something instead of just getting angry.
And here we get a glimpse of the future. So far Suprnova and the like have risen to the top for television shows and the like because they're the only ones who don't care about the legal repurcussions, and as of now they have the best organization system for it.
It will be really interesting to see if Google can come along and topple them. I think it would require to remain even more neutral and not filter any of the content on there. If they can do that, I'm sure Google's superior experience and technology would enable them to build a video search library that would dwarf Suprnova and be easier to use (though I don't know how much they could improve on it).
I'd be interested for them to test this with people clinically diagnosed as compulsive liars. Since the extra activity comes from having to formulate a thought as opposed to just spitting back an answer, I wonder if someone who's normal thought patterns did that with lies would show up.
Yeah, because you know the first thing that pops into mind when I think of Wizard of Oz is undead pirates and people saying "Whoah, I know kung-fu".
Oh well, I'm looking forward to this as well as the darker Willy Wonka coming out. I wonder what other interesting classics could be made darker?
I vote for Cinderella. Maybe they'll show how she REALLY won over the prince. Oh, and don't forget the product placement of Gucci glass slippers.
Or maybe the Jungle Book. Wanna find out what REALLY happens when a bunch of wild animals find a human baby alone in the jungle? Here's a hint: It'll be a short movie.
This same review was posted on Fark a couple weeks ago, but by someone else, so I'm going out on a limb here to suggest that this guy just plageriazed the review.
Now, as to whether the review is a good one? I'd guess so. Wizards has taken what used to be a great franchise, and have done nothing but turn it into the great money-milking machine +5.
I'm not saying I didn't like 3ED, I think it streamlined a lot of things and made it easier for new players. But every single book past that has been nothing but an excuse to cut down on content and quality while hiking the price at the same time. I was taken aback when I saw a very thin soft cover book cost about $26 when it used to be somewhere around $15.
I'm glad I have all my old books, because I have no plans on buying any new ones. Thank god for PDFs. And its such a shame what has happened to Gary Gygax through all of this since he is the one that deserves the lions share. I helped the way I could though, by going to the local gaming store where the Gygax family lives and where they have worked at various points and supporting them by buying pizza and product in exchange for some of the best D&D gaming sessions I've ever played in my entire life.
Thank god D&D has always been a game made by the players and not by the books.
I'm not a science person, so I didn't really have much information for my question regarding the moon mass, but thankfully much smarter people than myself have informed me.
I posed the naive thought because I was looking for intellectual discourse.
The reason I brought scifi into this is because it has a way of offering predictions of the future, some extreme, some pretty damn realistic. Now, which do you think is more likely, everybody uniting under one roof and working because they want to with peace and justice for all? Or nations trying to maintain powre and control over other nations and people striving for dominance over that which they think they should be able to claim as theirs?
Is it still illegal to telemarket to a cellphone if you have a prior business relationship established? I remember my friend kept getting "special promotional offers" on his cell from his own damned cellphone company, but legally there was nothing he could do.
I know you're joking, but there's a large group of people on the DNC list that are the real jewels the telemarketers are after, and they know it.
These are the people who can't turn things down, and know it. These are the people who aren't informed about things, and can easily be fasttalked, and they know it. They signed up for that list as soon as they could, and the telemarketers are doing everything in their power to get back access to them.
"From an outside perspective, it seems like the only ones enjoying freedom in the US are big, bug business. They can trample the freedom of private citizens quite easely, it seems and bother them at will while the government drags its feet."
You know, this is pretty crazy, and I have no idea how it would work...but maybe we the people should form a corporation for the people and put all of our money behind it. Maybe then we'd actually have some rights in this country, or at least the power to buy them.
Well, you may not be aware of this, but a large percentage of profit from telemarketers comes from people who just can't say no. These people are quite often aware they have this problem, and most likely signed up for the DNC list the second they had a chance.
So while a large number of people would never buy something from them anyways, there's also a very large number of people who, were they to be reachable, would have very little chance of being able to say no, and THAT is what these telemarketers are after.
Please, as someone in the marketing/PR industry, I ask you on behalf of my colleagues to not associate him with us. Perhaps a job on Wallstreet would be more suitable for his "special talents".
I think a Google Bombing is in order.
Remember guys, just because the laws are in place to prevent this stuff, doesn't mean people won't just ignore the laws, especially when they have a lot of money on the line like the top execs at these labels.
THAT is why it wasn't mentioned.
Wow, that reminds me, I have to rent that movie.
