Trust that Microsoft won't embed heavilty encrypted code that causes problems with Mozilla, etc as has been documented many times before.
In short, open source free and low-cost software products are likely to be widely adopted in governments, where spending public money for licenses is a difficult justification. Inevitably, that choice will lead to security breaches that will cost those same governments (and ultimately you), huge amounts of money to rectify.
He never heard of a virus? EXE's are not that hard to change, and if you take the copy mechanism out, it's very easy to create a trojan from any given binary and even encrypt it. Source Code doesn't give you any magic way to corrupt a program, any more then a binary does. You have to trust the source, but in general 99% of the time there isn't anything to be worried about.
If he is this paranoid, the only solution is for the governemt to write their own operating system, monitor everyone's computers, library reading habits, television viewing and email. Only then can we TRUST that we will be safe.
So obvious... Maybe they are just hoping to sell more ads. Too bad for Mozilla and Adblock.
Can someone please computer how long they can really last? The last earnings report they produced showed them with a net loss of 1.6 Million after paying their lawyers $9 Million, and that's just for the quarter!
So realistically, how long until the lawyers bleed SCO completely dry?
It's listed as the Ambient EXECTUTIVE Dashboard. Executive - no need to be sensible or accurate.
The previous color changing ones were a little too simple and tended to hypnotize the executives. Have you seen the Executive toys at most office stores? I don't think Novelty wears off for those folks.
I was working on an application where the client wanted to be able to swipe a drivers license and get all the user data - name, address, height, weight, etc for quick data entry. We investigated and found that each state has different formats, and not all states put all that info on their cards in mag or bar code formats. We hoped to get all of this info quickly when people test drive a car.
We would have had to develop a different format for each state and in some cases resorted to scanning and OCR. In they end they decided they can type it in themselves rather then pay for development.
I did learn that serveral states were considering a standard format. Believe me that marketing companies are DROOLING over the day when every person has their Multi-Pass type card.
Very interesting to see the dollar amounts though. There should be a column for that on the 1040's.:)
BTW, to the person who mentioned a use for cue-cat - I have about 50 of them and they don't work that great. They are about 5 bucks on ebay, or free if you take the left overs from your local radio shacks.
Netscape wasn't inferior to Internet Explorer at the time they were battling. I believe what really did Netscape in was Microsoft getting their DOM included as part of the W3C standard.
Suddenly <layers> were not just the netscape way of doing things, they were officially non-standard. Netscape had to scrap parts of their core rendering engine to comply with DOM. If you were going to write a web page, you used to have to write a different version for each browser if it was anything other then a basic page. Fed up designers go with standards - and MS made sure their browser became that standard.
Now Mozilla is up and running, kicking ass once again. Finally after years of IE5/6 (no noticable change?) we have some real innovation happening in browsers again.
Google shouldn't have any problems with standards. Browsers are the universal client. They can be extended to talk to just about any server or service.
MS will have to come up with better search technology or use monopoly to force MSN on people - oh yeah, they already do that.

Forget about the DDOS attacks. It's a distraction. The bigger problem is that the DDOS may be able to be changed on command to any other site on the internet.
This is a spam zombie virus. We need to work securing our comprimised systems and keeping them from joining the spam network and obeying the commands. If anyone has any real information about how this virus works as a relay and how to stop it at the network level please post it.
So far I've found the following links. Blocking port 3127 at the router seems like it could help a lot. Any other (real) solutions would be appreciated.
This always confused me about the cyber punk books. Hardware is advancing so fast, why on earth would you get an implant when the next major upgade doesn't just cost you money, but also incurs a major surgery. Even assume it's just a "standard" port like PS/2 or something, those are being replaced by USB. I've got this snazy ethernet port for the back of my skull, but it's only 10mbit. What's a cyborg to do?
This virus bastard is harvesting as well as all the other stuff. I have an email address I just created, and only sent to my family. This morning I got the virus email to that account. About an hour later I got a "TEST" email - it said "this is just a test". 40+ Spam's since then from tons of different zombies.
I'm going to disable the account for a while and hope the 500 error goes somewhere. SCO is somewhat entertaining because they are powerless. This virus sucks.
I work for myself as a programmer. I live in Northern Michigan though, so I do work at the rate most indians do. I never achieved huge pay so there was never a fall for me. I quit my job and started on my own company. I actually got a RAISE working for myself because property prices are not as insane as they are in California. You could purchase a huge house on the lake for the price of a ranch in LA. I am an American Outsourcer I suppose. I've never seen pictures of my boss or my co-workers, but we get along great and talk most every day for over a year now.
Anyway - form Wikipedia...
Subsistence farming is a mode of agriculture in which a plot of land produces only enough food to feed the family working it. Depending on climate, soil conditions, agricultural practices and the crop grown, it generally requires between 0.25 and 10 acres per person.
Sounds like your suggesting out of work programmers learn from the farmers who were arguably outsourced and replaced by machines a long time ago and have had longer time to adapt. Come up with a share ware app (or somehting) that can pay the rent and feed the kids. Forget a major company and the overhead involved.
I can't agree more with the personal aspects. I compete with others with guarenteed and proven quality, and making friends with all my clients. They are not someone to make money from - they are fellow business owners trying to succeed and there is no reason we can't do it together. I've lost huge $$$$ on projects because a viable open source alternative existed that I could adapt to their needs instead of recreating from scratch. In return, I have clients who come to me first for just about everything. Plus bartering is awesome. No taxes and the work gets done. Being in a small town (about 5,000) probably helps with that too.
The device will trap mice or other small creatures by means of a mechanism.
Claim 2
The mouse may or may not be killed or maimed in the process.
Claim 3
The device has trigger which should activated when mouse is in the propert area to be trapped.
The user may wish to put a bit of cheese or other bait near the trigger to lure mice to it. Too broad? Maybe if I add "with a computer" in there somewhere...
Maybe if Bush didn't invade Iraq, he could have given that 87 Billion to Nasa instead. In the mean time they have to do the best with what they have.
I agree it's wrong to just put NASA on a pedestal, but analyze their success as well as thier failures, and be sure to compare it to the other space agencies out there. I think they are doing a pretty incredible job accomplishing lots of things that have never been done before.
With that said, lets see how Opportunity does tonight!
