    I see that I was successful in making at least one enemy. *WARNING-Flamebait* So, would that make you a Democratic, (Anonymous) coward, Explorer using, MS-loving, anti-gun, pro-life, pro-church, bicycle-riding, vegan? Honestly, I'm only trying to pull your chain a bit here for focusing on two items in my list...please come out of the AC closet, and talk like a real human. If you've got any actual constructive questions or comments, I'd be happy to accomodate a real discussion.

    I see. So, you're confessing to being unreasonable? Well, at a minimum, that will get you nothing, and at a maximum will get you locked away (or worse), depending upon how you chose to act on your feelings.

    If you don't like the system, fight it, and many of us (even with opposing viewpoints) would be happy to listen to you reasonable opinion. It's your *insert diety*-given right.

    Oh, and believe it or not, there are many of us life-long conservatives that actually would agree on some of the issues with you. But again, you have to be reasonable, or nobody will listen to your ranting.

    Please re-read my statement. I did *not* say that he was "full of crap"...the AC that posted before me did.

    As for reading between the lines, you've obviously, incorrectly, done so with your assumptions about me. I'm not a party line voter. I don't believe in "intelligent design". And, I'm completely pissed at the administration for jailing people w/o due process, access to an attorney, and secret trials.

    All I was asking for was simple evidence of the assertions that he made.

    For many govt. screw-ups...As the saying goes (paraphrasing), you shouldn't assume it's a conspiricy when it could all be explained away as stupidity.

    You talk about paranoia has made a big comeback...really?...I live in a large urban area, and have yet to hear a single mention of it. Maybe you just need to get some better weed.

    Mac user since '84, and Republican since I first voted in '76. I'm a Firefox using, MS-bashing, gun-toting, pro-choice, anti-church, SUV-driving, meat-eating geek (with that list, I'm sure I'll piss off everybody). And, if you're into political correctness, just add me to your foes list now. There are many of us that can't all be painted into the same extreme circle that you'd like to put us in. Just as you're not all Ted Kennedy liberals, we're not all Pat Robertson conservatives. Believe it or not, there are people on both sides that are actually *boggle* reasonable. I've got a couple of friends who are (by my definition) extremely liberal, and we're able to enjoy each others company because we can debate the issues without holding the other in contempt...unlike many of the folks here that can't resist the urge to karma-whore by turning every issue into a conservative bash-fest.

    Some of them are faith-based fanatics who can't deal with the complexities of the real world. Others are short-term profiteers whose only real mission is to steal as much money from the government as possible. A few of them even have delusions of recreating the Holy Roman Empire.

    Ok Shanen, your comments were "insightful" right up to that point. I won't call it "a load of crap", like the AC did, but would ask you to provide evidence that this is truely the case. Otherwise, it simply looks like a cheap shot at the extreme right-wing (and yes, I'm a right winger...non-church goer, and pro-choice...believe it, or not), not that they don't deserve it.

    I'm not attempting to dispute that there's waste in govt. contracting. But for the parent to first admit not knowing, and then claim the 99% number is, at a minimum an exaggeration, and an insult to those of us (I've been in the business for 29 years...hardware & software engineering) who've worked in the industry for so long.

    You sir, are nothing but a karma whore to those mods with a distaste for the defense industry.

    I saw families -- families -- mom, dad, and kids -- living homeless on the street. On the street. The little girls would lift up their skirts, squat, and pee, right on the sidewalk. That's something you don't see very often in the US.

    You're mostly correct about the families. However, I've seen grown women squat and pee in Germany and Korea...not all cultures take offense to it.

    I'm just curious...

    Will there be an added difficulty in tracking these due to their small size? Obviously, there's some plan to communicate with them. But, over time, as their numbers grow, and their lifespan runs out, will NORAD (or some such agency) be able to keep track of these? Small as they may be, they'ed still be big enough to cause major damage if they collided with a shuttle, or other sattelite.

    I'm an American who lived in Europe for six years. From the time I returned to the US, until the ban was enacted, I was able to donate blood on a regular basis. I was surprised, when I was filling out the standard donation questioneer, to find that they had changed the rules, and I was suddenly unable to donate. Does this really make any sense at all? Are Europeans not donating blood? Has there been a single documented case of someone contracting Mad Cow through a blood donation? If so, are the risks of getting it worse than those of not having an adequate blood supply?

    Point 3: The three shot burst is the most commonly used variant of the M-16. The original AR-15, and a few variants, did do full auto; that was decided against to preserve ammunition, help accuracy, and because it just doesn't work well on the platform. A quick check would've also shown you that the newer M-4 rifle also uses Safe/Semi/3 shot, and that the full auto version of both platforms is only used by special forces groups.

    While in the Air Force ('79), in order to "qualify" (a requirement for heading overseas) with the M-16, I was sent to the range on Offutt AFB, Neb. The instructor allowed me to fire the entire clip on full auto, from the hip. No, I wasn't accurate, and yes, it was fun.

    That's an interesting viewpoint on American bases. However, if the theory is true, than how would you explain the base closures following the Cold War (remember the "peace dividend")? How about the closure of bases in the Phillipines? I could site numerous other closures. I don't know the numbers, but I'd bet money that there were times in the past when the U.S. had more overseas bases than it doe currently.

    Domestic bases are a different story due to the political pressures involved...every congressman wants them because they generate jobs (not out of any military necessity). The only time you'll hear a congresscritter recommend closure of a base in their own district is if the land is needed for something more profitable (usually only in urban areas).

    The linked page does not state that there's a 2 yr requirement for all e-mail. What it does say is:

    Violated Section 17(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, Rule 17a-4 under the Exchange Act, NYSE Rule 440 and NASD Rule 3110 by failing to preserve for a period of three years, and/or preserve in an accessible place for two years, electronic communications relating to the business of the firm, including interoffice memoranda and communications.

    I work for a Fortune 100 company, and it's standard procecdure for all email to be deleted from our servers after 30 days. I believe that policy went into effect around the time of this ruling...company lawyers wanting to play CYA, and all.

    Then explain to me, why, when I go the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.. (and I've been there about 4 times) that there are always Japanese people in the museum, and during the little movie they show before you go to see the memorial, the Japanese people are always snikering when they are showing scenes of the zero's bombing our ships and killing our servicemen?

    I've been there too, and saw no such thing. I'm not sure what your post has to do with the one you replied to (mine), but I'll mention that I have see a little of what you did while visiting Japan on vacation...watching a drunken old man singing karaoke to a video of kamikaze bombers! He was old enough to have been around during those days, so I wasn't surprised. When you've developed a hatred, it doesn't go away just because someone signed some papers on the deck of a ship. Out of curiosity, I'd like to know if the folk you saw appeared to be old enough to have lived during the war?

    Now that's rich! The US forbid supersonic flight over their own territory while sonic booms from USAF fighter planes were a common occurance in germany in the 80s!

    Now that's rich, comparing the cold war needs of the USAF (permitted by the German govt. FYI), with peacetime commercial flight.

    I spent six years of my life there helping defend that country in the 80s. You're welcome for the help in getting the wall to come down, jerk.

    Fair enough...I'm American.

    They could've dropped the first bomb and had the same result. The fact that they chose to drop two bombs is troubling.

    Hmmm...the fact that they didn't immediately surrender makes it far less troubling in my not so humble opinion.

    It's difficult for us that weren't alive during that time to have a true perspective on the moods of both nations at the time. So I wouldn't want to be the one to try to pass judgement on either side. I've visited both cities, and seen the museums with body parts in jars...a true eye opener that will hopefully never become necessary in a third location.

    ...that people aren't using cell phones in planes now? Just because you aren't allowed to used them on commercial flights doesn't prevent any private pilot from doing so in his Cessna. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that it happens all the time.

    Where the hell do you live? I want to move there so I can quit being harassed by my homeowners' association for having my antenna in the "wrong place".

    You're probably already aware that your HOA can not enforce a ruling on the location of your antenna. That's covered by federal law. I've lived in two HOAs that attempted to do so, but it's completely unenforcable. Here's a neat little summary on the topic:

    It is guaranted that the vehicle has to pass through a tunnel or other type of obstruction that disables GPS.

    That's BS. Let's assume that a company admits the patent system is screwed, so it obtains patents for defense. That makes no sense unless it is also working to change the current patent system so defensive patents are NOT necessary.

    Well, if you're a business manager, you learn to work within the system. You don't necessarily spend your firms money to try to change it, especially when your chances are slim to none. I can guarantee you that your shareholders would hang you out to dry if you spent their profits on it.

    Yes, the system is broken, but don't expect the business community to put forth an effort to fix it...just ain't gonna happen unless there's some incentive for them to do so.
