since some seem to have trouble on the index page... here it is:

Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision.
Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia.

    current situation:

we use oil for energy. Problem, oil is a finite resource, it WILL run out. Alternatives are needed. Okay, we agree so far.

What about using the most obvious Nuclear Energy..The Sun?

No viable alternatives exist yet. To quote verbatim:

Direct conversion of sunlight to electricity by solar cells is a promising technology, and already locally useful, but the amount of electricity which can be generated by that method is not great compared with demand. Because it is a low grade energy, with a low conversion efficiency (about 15%) capturing solar energy in quantity requires huge installations--many square miles. About 8 percent of the cells must be replaced each year. But the big problem is how to store significant amounts of electricity when the Sun is not available to produce it (Trainer, 1995), for example, at night. The problem remains unsolved. Because of this, solar energy cannot be used as a dependable base load. And, the immediate end product is electricity, a very limited replacement for oil. Also, adding in all the energy costs of the production and maintenance of PV (photovoltaic) installations, the net energy recovery is low (Trainer, 1995).

If you can think of a way to store this energy, fantastic, please share. Otherwise, back to the drawing board.

As others here have mentioned, this is going in the direction of Microsofts new Longhorn OS, which has some hefty system requirements. The dual core cpu is an interesting concept, an extension of Moores law, so that the computing power increase of 2x @18 months remains constant. Who cares how this is achieved, as long as its happening! What I find really interesting is the concept of usability...while slashdotters will easily find uses for these pc's, what will jane the nurse be doing? compositing home videos for her MSN messenger profile? A lot of the more powerful apps such as 3d modelling require learned skills and also talent to make something good.

Still, cpu's of this magnitude everywhere will help with CETI@home number crunching. Maybe the Terabyte storage mentioned in those Longhorn specs has something to do withCerns Large Hadron Collider going online. It is expected to produce 10 Petabytes of data a year. The data is going to be saved via the grid
