Thats why they are moving to an "all electric" power system. So when they want to move the ship, all the power goes to the drive system, then when they reach the combat zone, most of the power can be diverted to the weapon systems with limited power for positional manouvering.
Barrel Friction? I thought they were using magnetic fields to launch the projectiles which should be keeping them away from the barrel sides and so no friction. Not been keeping up on the info on this though.
Why would you need people near the weapon systems to be affected by the sonic boom from the shells? All the crew would be below decks in their protected control rooms.
Have they gone with the modular weapon systems? "Podules" where you can easily change the configuration of the ship to more closely match the combat requirements.
But thats only Fujitsu ICL's creation. ICL was created from the UK computer pioneers (Lyons - with LEO, etc). They dropped the ICL name about 10 years after the "merger" with Fujitsu. They sold stuff as Fujitsu Siemens for a while too - dunno if they still do.
Fujitsu have been a long time user/developer of Sparc stuff.
So instead of carrying a small "non-lethal" weapon, the criminals start carrying automatics with deadly rounds in them. You just create an arms race for the criminals and the police.
If "honest" citizens do not carry firearms, then you know that everyone who does IS criminal and can be shot by the police.
In America, its not the criminals you should be afraid of, its the police who shoot you and get away with it.

Top 500 - http://www.top500.org/ Cornell - http://www.tc.cornell.edu/ NEC Earth Simulator - http://www.es.jamstec.go.jp/esc/eng/ESC/index.h tml
The fastest is the Earth Simulator in Japan (35860/40960 Rmax/Rpeak) Virginia Tech as the fastest Apple cluster (as mentioned on/. previously) (10280/17600) Cornell has the fastest Windows cluster (1503/3073)
As for the other questions - Google is your friend and the database on www.top500.org is searchable so should be able to answer anything else.
Windows doesn't cluster?
So what about those that have ranked in the Top 500 list then that run Windows?
In the November 2003 list....
At 68 - a Windows based system at Cornell from Dell with 640 processors (it originally started out at 320 on the list with 252 processors).
At 128 - a Windows based system in Korea with 400 processors.
Thunderbird and Firefox are the standalone programs for mail and browsing. The Mozilla Suite is a platform that does everything (except the laundry - but they're probably working on that too) which the other standalone programs use as their base.
I always thought of Mozilla as the technology demontrator platform and the other programs as the bits that are useful.
But confirming that the material from the meteorites is the same as asteroid sample is useful and not at all disappointing. Its another theory proven or disproven, all of which advances our knowledge of the universe.
Cause if they did that - the asteroid would destory Tokyo and Godzilla would fight whatever alien space creature lived on the asteroid, destroying whatever was left of Tokyo from the asteroid impact.:-)
Coming from a country that built itself on infringing existing copyrights.
Look back at the history of the USA and how it used to deal with copyright.
Now they want the Criminal Justice System to also prosecute Civil cases. Since when has the establishment been civilian?
The sooner the USA stops the commercialisation of the government (see Senator Disney and Senator RIAA as examples) then perhaps the government might get back to being "for the people, by the people".
Thats the price you pay for living in a capitalist society in a global economy. The survival of the cheapest.
If you want - make sure you only buy locally produced from local companies. Let those who you do not use know why you are not using them. Its no point in them loosing your trade without knowing why. If enough people state why they not longer do business with them then they might change their policies. Then again, they might just look at their global profits and ignore it.
Strange that the US sales have fallen and yet the UK and Australian sales have both risen (by a similar amount) for album sales - the Singles market and dropped completely.
Steam railways started near Newcastle (developed from the coal tramways) - the Industrial Revolution was already under way by then though with the Bridgewater Canal bringing cheaper coal and goods into Manchester and the water powered mills in East Lancashire and North Derbyshire. Not many cotton mills in the North East.... The first Iron works were in the Severn Valley. Again - not in the North East. Steam power - Cornwall for pumping the tin mines - not quite the North East either.:-)
As someone who helps out with the local Mountain Rescue group - one of the biggest problems they now have is people going out without proper maps and compasses and only their GPS. They then phone (cell phone) for rescue cause their GPS batteries are flat and they haven't a clue where they are.
Perhaps if Project Gutenberg started their own PDF distribution people would complain less.
Continue to provide the texts in the plain text formats but also in PDF. That way they can also provide the original layout of the text and the images in the right contexts like some of the old Celtic books (eg. Book of Kells).
You mean in the same way that ANY copyright holder controls the way we use their product after the legally obtain the right to use it?
The FSF attempts to control the way I can use the source code of GPL programs I obtain in the same way that the RIAA attempts to control their artists copyrighted materials.
If you don't like the licensing - then don't use the product. No one forced you to buy that Spice Girls CD!:-)
Most of the modern coasters use linear motors to launch the trains, so better conductors and magnets would make the launch systems faster (and cheaper):-)
Perhaps we can see someone building something to beat the Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point for being the tallest, fastest coaster (when its working).
Looking at the latest mobile(cellular) phones, most of them support Bluetooth very nicely (SonyEricsson P800 for example), but the MS Smartphone ones don't, despite having everything else.

What there should be is a Groklaw for Patents.
So that the prior art can be collated and checked.
It might not stop the tide, but it could help reduce the stupidity of some of the claims.

But you probably could use the remains as a "solid" fuel for power stations with little/no conversion needed for the coal fired ones.

Except having only one ID makes it easier for the criminal types as they only need to copies of one ID instead of multiple ones.
Easier for ID theft too.
All the major studies into the ID cards have said it won't make any difference to the things the government claim it will make a differnce in.

But the Spaghetti Westerns were all based on Japanese films and filmed in Spain by Italians.
Most famous of the Japanese films would probably be Seven Samuri, which was remade as The Magnificent Seven.

My Sony digital video camera has it.

A copy is a copy no matter what the length - as long as it is indentifiable as such.
How would the FSF feel if someone took chunks of their work and used it commercially without credit or permission?
Its a copyright issue and down to obtaining the permission to use the material.
Why put a hard disk in at all?
If its just for storing levels and stuff, then a 512M or 1Gb Flash card would do.
Are you actually going to use more than that much space for storing stuff?
Putting a HD in would only make it easier for the Linux crews to port their favourite OS onto a nice new platform.

And how do you prove to the BSA that you are compliant by using license free software?
With an audit.
You have to do the audit no matter what when they suspect you to prove to them you are clean.
