Cash issues aside (and, yes, I'll admit that the cost of Office is pretty damn high) there is nothing "unfortunate" about MS Office being an industry standard. It's a solid product and does what people need it to do.

Also, as an avid user of Office (every day, every program, all the time) I am extremely happy to have my documents integrate so well with each other. 2003 is definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion.

A.) If you build your own system then it will *definitely* not be preinstalled.

What I find interesting about using the internet to find information (which I do *very* frequently -- I rarely use the library for research anymore) is that schools, especially high schools, do not encourage this.

For example, I remember my high school AP English teacher telling us that we could not use the internet as a research source for our final term paper. I didn't get it. There's so much information on the internet. Yes -- I realize that a lot of it is not valuable and tends to be very opinionated, but so is many other pieces of information in the world (including: BOOKS).

I guess I feel that instead of shutting out the internet as something that it full of garbage, teachers should teach their students to be able to filter out the crap from the real information.

    Just a thought.

Why should a company who profits from closed source software (Microsoft is not the only one) be paying for OpenSource software? This does not even make the tiniest bit of sense! If any company would comply to this, they would be shooting themselves in the foot twice. First they would be "taxed" 10% and then they would be supporting OpenSource.

Stupid...dumb...idiotic...preposterous - those are just a few words that come to mind. The government should really leave businesses alone for the most part. Seriously...

I hope I don't get modded down for that. I use OpenSource software, but Gates was right when he wrote that paper of his years ago -- there is no "real" money with OpenSource. And no money leads to no jobs leads to bad economy leads to...(vicious cycle ensues).
