Hey, I'm interested in hearing more about what you have to say about this, but I didn't follow your paragraph. 80 years, 2-6 nutrients, then 80 nutrients...? Are you saying that over the years our food quality has decreased because of the chemicals we've used and that the soil hasn't been completely replenished? I'll check the google link in the grand-parent, too.
Please. Stop mincing words. It doesn't matter what you call it, debating semantics does not make it "more" or "less" legal. Sheesh, why don't you just admit it? Did you drink before you turned 21? Do you think that a cop would ever let you off the hook if you said it was legal based on the fact that you believe it's ok? Do you really think he--the law--cares what you believe is right? He's still going to arrest you for underage drinking. You'd still do it, and that's fine, just fess up to it.
You just rocked my world. Thank you. I am d/ling it the instant I get home from work tonight. It looks like the piece of software I've been wanting for years. It's the perfect "repository", can even export to the web. Perfect.
I think that you make a lot of great points. The USA is not what it used to be, period. It could swing back and be a great thing again, or it could continue the downward spiral and get much worse before it gets better. Only time will tell. I sure hope it gets better and will do everything I can to help it get better.
Slashdot has always been very opinionated and America-centric. Look at the majority of the stories that come through, and as you said, the majority of comments and their tone. Everyone still thinks the USA is still the best place on Earth, which is the problem: the general (American) public is completely naive about how it is slipping and losing its edge. They're either ignorant or ignoring it and not doing anything about it, which is why it continues to slip. They'd rather hope that it doesn't happen in their lifetime and that they can live their comfortable lives and let the next generation deal with it. It gets back to this country being so lazy! Aggravatingly so! They always want someone else to pick up the slack, they're barely interested in saving their own ass! The media in this country is not doing their job. They're reporting stupid news that doesn't matter, casting horrible things in a good light, ignoring the rest of the world, and not telling the American public what the rest of the world is saying about us and our leaders!
I'm just going to stop now. In short, I agree with you.
Even though you're an AC, I agree with you. Or go to the Apple discussions and look at how many trolls there are. Or the BSD sections. We live in a society where people would rather spend their time trolling a meaningless discussion or starting a flame war than doing something even half-educational. And when I say half, I mean something as lame as watching something on the tube that educates you. Not real education like a textbook, or conducting experiments. What happened to kids buying science kits and burning chemicals to look at colors and studying why? Do people buy science kits anymore?
I actually have a lot more to say but deleted it because there's no sense in ranting. I'll sum it up: Next time you're bored, don't ask someone or something to entertain you. Go entertain yourself, maybe learn to like to learn. Yeah, that's right, learn to enjoy learning--that skill will serve you well the rest of your life.
Moderating this down or arguing the point is like sticking your head in the sand.
By trying to say that your point is irrefutable and anyone who tries to argue with you is wrong is not a good way to go. It makes your argument look weak and suppresses ideas through discussion. Perhaps it would be better to say,
Most people who moderate this down or argue my point are simply sticking their head in the sand and not grasping the reality of the situation. Insightful discussion is welcome.
But, what do I know. I'm not even sure why I'm posting this. Just my 2 cents to help your cause.
hah, thanks man! Glad you got 10 songs of it!:) I just redeemed the cap before someone else saw the code, but I haven't chosen the song yet. Thanks again.:-)
haha, clever! And I would seriously consider it if the promotion didn't end tomorrow.:( I don't have 21 songs I want to buy by tomorrow night, and it's truly a waste of money if I buy them only to buy crap songs just to spend it. Then I didn't really gain anything, I just wasted the money because I thought I was saving money. Like those sales that always dupe people into spending money just because they're "saving" money. Those sales and the amount of takers just kill me.
yeah, I sp'ose you're not really wasting $21 since it's not like you ever had $21...just like if you invest $2000 in stocks, it jumps to $5000, and then falls to $4000, you didn't lose $1000 you still gained $2000. All a matter of perspective.
I personally would consider it wasting $21 (free money), but you may not consider it any loss at all.
hmm, or you could redeem the 21 caps you have, burn the songs to a cd, rip them, and get 21 free songs that don't have DRM. But, it's your 21 wasted dollars, not mine.
I agree. Those anti-piracy clips before movies annoy me so much! I hate being subjected to that despite the fact that I just paid for my ticket. Bah, take that crap somewhere else. I am your customer, not your enemy--treat me as such.
I definitely agree with you on your points. Also, that "Synthetic Oil Life Study" link is great. I find it very interesting that most of the wear seems to happen in the first 3000 miles. Makes me wonder if I should wait a little longer to change mine than when I had planned to.
It is the oil companies & quickie oil change joints that would have you believe this. If true, why does my vehicle's manufacturer recommend 5,000 or 7,500 mile oil changes, depending upon driving conditions? I'm not negating the need for regualr service but let's not perpetuate the hype.
Let's get a few other things straight, too. There are two reasons that a car company can suggest a change interval of that length.
One, Schedule "A", which is pretty much no one and means you drive about 30+ miles every time you start the car, and it's all freeway with no stop and go. Stop-and-go and short-trips are not optimal, which is what schedule "A" is.
Two, some companies (usually upper-class vehicles like BMW) use synthetic oils, which last longer. In fact, some people will drive 10k-15k on synthetic oil because it takes that much longer to break down. But, you'd better have a big oil-filter on there if you're going to do that.
Have you ever changed your oil yourself and looked at it? 3k on dino oil really will turn the color pretty dark. That dark oil is contaminated and will not lubricate the engine as it should, leading to greater wear and earlier breakdown of the engine.
That same hype you talk about also says that new cars with plantinum spark plugs can go 100k miles without a tuneup. Hmm, I do mostly freeway driving with my car, it's a 2000, and it has 76k miles on it. I pulled out the plugs yesterday and they could've used a change a long time ago. And yes, my spark plugs had all kinds of "hard" and "complicated" technology on them, like the fact that there are no spark plug wires and the plugs aren't sticking out of the engine. Instead they're underneath those crazy things called "glow-packs" that are held in with torx screws, and the plug requires a 5/8" socket with about a 10" extension on it to take out. Whoa, that was too complicated. I can't believe I was able to adapt.
I guess the point is don't be so quick to bash the hype when you don't know what you're talking about. You shouldn't believe it whether it works in your favor or against. It's all hype, period. Make sure you get the facts about what was actually used in tests before you believe it (like the difference in oil-life for dino oil vs synthetic, and schedule "A" style driving vs schedule "B" style driving).
I can't believe I just ranted for that long. I'm done now, thanks for listening, don't miss another edition next week.
hehehe, I agree with fozzmeister (the other reply, not the AC I'm replying to). "Hackers" did not code for MacOS 9. haha, that must be a joke, I keep laughing as I type this. OS 9 had VERY limited software. You think OS X has limited software, you should've seen 9. With X, we can run most unix apps. In 9, we were totally at the mercy of the few software developers that would port to it because it was a massive effort. Now porting to MacOS X from unix requires few, if any, changes.
There were no hackers on OS 9. It didn't have a command line as you point out, and it couldn't connect to machines that used a command line. It could barely talk to anything outside http, ftp, and a few other legacy protocols. No hacker wasted their time on it.
I'm debating whether to post this because I don't want to start a flamewar with an AC. If someone replies to this, reply with your nick or I won't respond. No sense in conversing with a coward.
attempting to be insightful as I refute him and not be modded flamebait...;-)
I don't think your argument about algorithms being as secure as AES and the like stand at all. They could use an RSA algorithm and still be hacked. The weakness is not in the encryption, as this tool clearly demonstrates. The weakness is that the key has to be stored somewhere. When it's found, the key is used to do the decryption, which is a a no-brainer if you know the algorithm. The strength of those algorithms (AES, RSA) is the secrecy of the private key. However, for the local iTunes and the iPod to play the music the key MUST be stored somewhere. They finally found it, deciphered it (because this key probably isn't in plain text, but isn't encrypted with another key or it just gets cyclical and redundant with no benefit), and wham, here we are.
Uncrackable systems are not possible in an automated environment (iTMS and iTunes are essentially automated, requiring no human interaction to decipher a file). Uncrackable systems are not possible period because even with human interaction, your human becomes the weakness. Humans are greedy, power-hungry, and can be bought to give up their key. In an instant, security is instantly and completely comprimised.
The passing of HyperCard really is sad. Sure, not many people used it anymore, but being fairly young, it was my introduction to "programming" ("scripting" was more like it). I was first exposed to it in 3rd grade, but really started to take-off in 4th grade. I played around with it for years because it was so flexible, and at the time, lots of third-party stacks were accessible that I could learn from. People built entire applications out of this thing, which simply amazed me, and there were tools around to break locked stacks so I could look at their code. There were even "resource" stacks that had animated icons, encryption routines, etc that you could copy and paste into your own! It was a wonder for multimedia way back in the day. Even the first Myst was built on this thing, using a hack that allowed for color cards!
It's not much to todays standards, but it was what got me started in my future career of computers and software development, and for that I owe it much. Farewell.
You know it's so funny to see people whine and complain about how music stores, like the iTMS, use an "inferior" and "closed" format that "has DRM." Then, a music store comes along that sells music in Ogg Vorbis--a format that the OS community rants and raves about because it's "better" and "open" and "lacks DRM"--and people still post crap like this, essentially saying, "That's not good enough." Well if it's not good enough even after what you're whining for comes about, you have three options:
1. Go somewhere else! Or better yet,
2. Start your own store if you feel your format is so superior and you're so much better. Or finally,...
You suspended her account because she was uninformed and tried to download some stuff you consider harmful? I'm not trying to start a flame-war with you, it just strikes a deep nerve in me when I see other parents acting how mine did. I'm sorry it sounded harsh, I'm just trying to warn you that your strict and harsh tactics will NOT payoff for you in the long run. It'd be far better for you to have to deal with a virus once or twice and kindly educate her than have her hate you for years. Learn to be gentle, is my advice.
