I agree that Sony products have declined in quality, but I don't think it completely has to do with short term profits. They have alot more competition than they did in the past. They have to cut costs to keep up with companies in China and Korea. American consumers tend to choose products based on cost. I know there are exceptions, but electronics like TVs and DVD players are commodity items now and competition is fierce.
I prefer Samsumg stuff myself.

I think you got that confused with the time Bill Gates bought Home Simpson's internet company, CompuGlobalHyperMegaNet(tm), and quickly ransacked his house.
I wonder if any of the work they do will involve teaching the DMV employees not to open up unknown attachments and other forms of "safer" internet use. All complaints about security holes and stuff aside, there's a good chance this mess started when someone opened an infected email.
As a fellow alum I prefer to call UB "a freezing cold campus with a plethora of fierce windtunnels." I once saw a girl get blown into a moving vehicle. She wasn't hurt so it's okay to laugh:)
Seriously, though, can anyone document a case in which surveillance cameras resulted in a terrorist attack being stopped?
You'd be amazed at how well cameras act as a deterrent. Criminals are much less likely to commit a crime if they know they're being watched. I can't comment on the terrorist aspect, but I'm sure there was a time somewhere when people walked away because they saw too many cameras around.
Almost every job listed will have some sort of min/max age requirement. You could even be denied a job based on your blood type! Having type B blood puts you at a disadvantage from the start when looking for a job in Japan.
After spending 3 years in Japan, I was disappointed at the build quality of US phone when I returned. Anyone who's used a Japanese mobile phone will tell you they are built to hold up much longer than the ones in the US. I feel like if I drop my US cell once, it's a goner. I banged my JP phone up alot and it's still going strong.
Why would you want these? While case shopping I saw these and for the first 3 seconds I was like, "cool." Then logic kicked in and realized they don't accomplish the two main things I look for in a case, protecting my equipment from dust and other nasties (as mentioned in parent) and dulling some of the noise. These things are like a spoiler on a Ford Escort. Yeah it may help the car look a tad better than god-awful, but it doesn't really accomplish anything of use.
Why should he confess if he's innocent? If he has to do that, there's something seriously screwed up in the legal system.
If you think that this story getting more media coverage will help,, I believe you are gravely mistaken. There is a very strong attitude of indiffernce in Japan. I think that's the best way to explain it. I haven't found the perfect words to explain it because I don't have it quite figured out. I just call it the "shogenai" factor for now.
I don't know how long you've been here, but try to observe more traditional Japanese people if you can. I'm sure you probably hang out with more open minded Japanese people, as I do. They have a very closed mindset.
I'm not saying this guy is innocent, but he got a longer prison sentence than most murderers. Japan has a conviction rate above %90 percent. They can also hold someone on suspicion for up to 21 days without so much as a phone call. My greatest fear is just being a suspect. It doesn't matter if you're guilty or not here. So I get a heavy fine and no "prison sentence." I could still be in prison for almost a month before charges are even filed.
If you live or work on a train line, yeah it's okay. When I say DC, I mean the whole area. I would have to go to my main office every so often out in VA where the trains don't reach and then drive back to MD. The DC metro area has spread out quite a bit in the last 20 years and rail service hasn't kept pace.
I live in Tokyo now and if there's one thing you can almost always count on, it's the train system. I know that if my commute is 30 minutes, it will always be 30 minutes, except for the rare exception, whether it's rush hour or late at night. I go back to the DC and I'm stuck on the Beltway during rush hour for 3 hours for what is normally a 30 minute drive.
I don't think passenger trains will ever catch on in The States. The population is just too spread out right now. Japan is roughly the size of California but with half the population of the US (If I recall correctly.) You just can't fit all those people on the roads at 1 or 2 people per car. And besides, how will all the salarymen molest the school girls if they're in a car and not crammed into a train:)
That was an explanation a Boeing person said when asked why they didn't consider 4 engines when designing the 777. His answer was it increases the likelyhood of a failure. This thing seems so complicated something is likely to fail every other day.

I swear I don't know how Japanese people are so damn skinny. All they talk about is food. Maybe that's the answer! Just talk about food long enough and you'll eventually trick yourself into thinking you've eaten!

That's where I feel my schooling benefitted me most. All of the math teachers I had through jr. high and high school were old. They taught us the basics using paper and pencil and didn't rely on calcs until much later. It's one thing to be able to plug in a bunch of numbers to solve a problem. It's another to be able to understand why the answer is what it is.

Not quite the same thing, but close
That reminds me, I have to catch up on my dilbert comics. That should keep me occupied for 30 minutes or so.
When we finally do meet Spock. I hope he doesn't break out in this tune.
No it didn't have to be said.
It's and old joke. Let it go.

Was it the same rabble rousers that are always on South Park? "Rabble rabble rabble" God that cracks me up.

It would fit right in with their governmental system.

Forget adding features, add some better plastics!
If only they had an inadimate carbon rod.
I think it's quite obvious that the other 75% of the connections are people connecting to Gopher to look up any and all relevent facts.

I don't think they care if it's /.ed or not. They haven't even updated it in forever:

And, I'm told, most people can escape imprisonment or heavy fining by just apologising well.
Unless you're a foreigner
