an English language-speaking geisha for every geek travelling to Japan - we can buy our own PDAs thank you very much, but get a Japanese girl we might need some serious assistance
the list of people and companies involved in this effort reminded me of an old joke question: How many PhDs does it require to a) screw a light bulb in; b) to light a match; c) to lure a virgin in bed; etc
mark my words - Apple will NEVER release smth like that - at least with the type of specs mentioned on the RUMOR site.
This goes against everything Apple prophets -
Cube was not just a headless Mac - it was many new things combined - form factor, fanless and pretty well equipped for its time. The reasons it died are same that will prevent Apple from releasing this pizza box.
iLife? - Apple Computer has had the answer for you for over a year by now.
Unix at the core, Power5/G5 inside and a human-oriented interface.

unless there is an acompanying signifincant genetic defect - a broken chromosome or some chromosomal rearrangement - epigenetic defects would be expected to be corrected by genome's passage through the germ cell lineage. But it is quite concievable that even epigenetic defects may be strong or significant enough not to be corrected just in one passage/generation and thus could be transmitted to grandchildren of the clone - we simply don't know enough about the process of reprogramming at this point.
from the USATODAY article:
"Chromatin transfer, a process that GSC licenses from a cattle-cloning firm, adds an additional step to cloning by exposing the donor cell genes more cleanly, in theory, to the egg cell. However, the firm has not published statistics on its findings in a scientific journal, leaving outside researchers uncertain about the claim.
How it works: Before cloning, technicians chemically remove extraneous genetic material from the donor skin cell. To do this, they make holes in the nuclear membrane of the skin cell, soaking it in a substance that dissolves the membrane.
This facilitates the removal of specific cell regulatory proteins associated with the skin itself, leaving behind the basic genetic material, or chromatin, inside the cell. The chromatin, rather than the entire donor skin cell, is then placed inside the egg cell."
Key words here are - no scientific publication to support their claims. Theoretically, the described procedure may be benefitial to the overall success of cloning but inherently the idea of stripping off unwanted proteins (not the genetic material as the article states) is very much an educated guess based on our current knowledge of gene regulation. Whether this is the case in reality - we need to see the data and more - reproduction of the data by other labs.
My thinking - this is one lucky kitty to be alive and much more needs to be learned to ensure that our future clones are viable and just as smart as we are!
you are raising a question that we have no answer for at this time. Telomere length in clones has been evaluated and the data are rather spotty - some claim their shortening other don't see any evidence of that thus envoking efficient repair. We have only very crude tools for mesurement of telomere length - thus the resolution is poor which leaves a lot of room for hand waving. Your argument about Dolly is only partly relevant - it is not very clear what it died from but it was not prematurely aged. I consider animal cloning a great experimental platform that will give us an opportunity to learn more about genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of nuclear reprogramming. The commercial aspect of cloning of animals, especially pets and not meat producers, is also OK with me - this will generate financial mechanism to carry out this type of research free of govermental limitations
"e" in emac stands for educational. And what everybody today seems to forget is the history of eMac - it was initially marketed and produced exclusively for schools and was not available for purchase anywhere but thru the edu channel. There was massive amount of discussions on how to buy one at that time for your home use. Apple never pushed this to customers as an full blown entertainment hub - this machine is not for gaming and it never was. The artcile's author is simply wrong here.

man, you totaly right on the money with this point - I had a funny feeling about this myself but couldn't precisely pinpoint it before - but it is really about the fact that the two sides involved represent two extremes of the modern online business - a rock-solid player on one side and pretty iffy/shaky/spotty currency dealer on the other...
stange deal indeed...
is how Firefox works with "PDF browser plugin":
opening a PFD doc in one tab kills wheel srolling in other tabs...
The plugin works seamlessly in Safari
otherwise I haven't seen any other problems
(just like every other WP) is still missing one key feature - a built-in robust reference manager. OpenOffice has one but it functions like a stone-age app and is of no use due to lack of direct linking with on-line databases. This leaves EndNote as porbably the only reference manager out there and it works best with MS Word and somewhat less with Nisus. I have bugging developers to include this feature/functionality into any of their WP's but to no avail - does anybody know why? Overall, Abi and any other recent WP efforts along same lines are missing the boat with research-oriented users. Finally, Abi still cannot open MS Word docs with even minor traces of sophisticated formatting - but that may be due to inherent qualities of MS Word.
aliens will be beaming stronger and less complicated signals to Earth?
We have a solution now - you go there for free and pay the fare only for the return trip when ready to do so.
Disclaimer: Prices may change without prior announcements... Khorosho?- now terrorists will be able to hit so many targets at once! This could only come from Texas just like Dubya...
we dont' say clone - we say body-double, you insensitive clod!

to have generated a story on /.
ah-h-h-h... my 4th-grader son just got an A in a science test devoted to these same questions - should I get him a /. account or what ?...

they do now.

yes, I looked at bookends before but somehow was not impressed with reference miner... Maybe I should take another stab at it.
