  1. "ultra high resolution"? on Samsung's Linux-based Diskless Camcorder · · Score: 1
"Capture crisp, clear images in ultra-high resolution", the ad says.

I think not - the still-image resolution is 800x600! I guess that was ultra-high in the nineties, but surely not nowadays.

Doesn't seems to work on the Slashdotted TheTechZone site, unforunately. :/

  5. smoke, lots of it! on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1
    Two things:

The first one was once when I turned my chair a little too fast and managed to knock my knee sideways into the computer standing under my desk. I hear a metallic thud, and then lots of smoke started coming out of the computer. I killed the power right away and cleared the room of smoke.

After the smoke had settled, I discovered that the hard drive cage (which I had unscrewed and never fastened again) had dropped to the "floor" of the big tower cage and shorted the cable to the internal speaker. Thus the large amount of smoke... The speaker cable has almost melted and left some black marks on the floor of the case... Amazingly and luckily nothing else was damaged.

The second mistake was just plain stupid - I decided to reset the BIOS on a brand new motherboard for my PVR, and shorted the pins on the motherboard just like I was supposed to... THe computer was turned off, but I did however forget to turn off the PSU, meaning the mobo was still powered when I cleared the BIOS (that would never had happened pre-ATX boards). The BIOS was fried and the board was turned totally unusable...

  6. the explanation on How Many TV Channels Will There Be In The Future? · · Score: 1
    Quote from the PVRblog post:

Average Number Of TV Channels Receivable
    <snip>
    2002 102.1
    2003 100.4

I can see an easy explanation to why this number has stopped at about 100... People simply don't want more than 100 (or 99) channels to avoid having to press THREE buttons on their remotes to select channel.

Besides, who has the energy to hit "channel+" 100+ times to cycle through them all?

MythTV is really mature nowadays, and thanks to Jarod Wilsons HOWTO (where he goes through the MythTV install and the entire hardware configuring process step-by-step), even a relative Linux newbie (are there any of those around here? :) can get MythTV working in a matter of hours. Highly recommended.

There are also IRC channels (#mythtv and #mythtv-users on Freenode) and very active and helpful mailing lists to ask for help if you get stuck (at some point or another, you will!).

  10. client/server solution on Second Generation Homebrew PVR Devices · · Score: 2, Insightful
One thing that shouldn't be forgotten when comparing MythTV with TiVo is the cool possibility of a client-server system with MythTV.

You can have a noisy ugly backend server with lots of TV tuners and storage space stuffed away in your closet, and then have small, noiseless/quiet frontends in every room of the house.

The advantage is obvious - people can watch live TV (different channels, only limited by the number of TV tuners) or recordings in every room of the house, and the overall noise level and power consumption is lower since you only need to power up the front ends when you actually want to watch something.

The only thing running 24/7 is the backend server, and if you're using hardware MPEG cards, the load is very low, meaning MythTV can co-exist with any other services you might be running on your server...

Well, this is true for tourists like you and me, but I'm quite sure that business travelers don't spend their entire nights outside... They probably want to relax in their room after spending ours in endless meetings, and an addition of a massage chair and a 42" plasma TV probably is a nice bonus.
